Inistioge is widely
acknowledged as one of the most charming villages in Ireland. Situated on
the river Nore at probably its most beautiful stretch and surrounded by
hills and forests, the village has everything going for it. Its pretty
square, lined with neat little houses has been much admired, and the
eighteenth century ten-arch bridge is among the finest to be found
anywhere. Indeed Inistioge's beauty has been further recognised by the
making of films there in recent years, Widows Peak starring Mia Farrow,
and Circle of Friends starring Chris O'Donnell and Minnie Driver.
As with Thomastown, Inistioge was founded by
Thomas FitzAnthony, who built his motte and bailey on a rock overlooking
the river Nore. Between 1206 and 1210 he established an Augustinian
priory, around which the village grew.
Apart from the village itself, the main
attraction for visitors to Inistioge is Woodstock estate, in the hills
high above. Here is a large forest with many fine walks, along the
riverside and across the hills.
