    Water Experiment 4

    More Surface Tension

Experiment: This is a fun way to examine how soap destroys the "skin" or tension on the surface of water.

    Materials:

    You will need:

    Card
    Scissors
    Water
    Basin
Washing Up soap (we used Fairy Liquid)
    Eyedropper

    Method:

    What you have to do:

    1) Fill the basin about half full with water.

    2) Cut out a boat shaped piece of card. Cut a notch in the rear of the card.

    3) Carefully place the card on the surface of the water.

    4) Drop a single drop of washing up liquid into the notch at the back of the card.

Result: The cut out card boat shoots across the basin of water with the notch facing the back.

Conclusion: When soap is dropped in the notch at the back of the paper, the surface tension is broken at that point and retracts to the side of the basin dragging the boat with it.

A point to note: This experiment can only be done once!! If you wish to repeat it, wash out the basin, refill with fresh water and go again.
