THE SEASON 1982/83
HISTORY
1982/1983
Our Junior Team has played in the third division league up to the begining
of the 1982-1983 season when they were rewarded for their outstanding
efforts. of the previous season by been promoted to the second division.
Congratulations to this panel of players and of course their Manager
Michael Canning.
After now gaining promtion the team had its sights set on the first
division and at the begining of the season they looked very capable of
reaching their goal. Mid-way through the season valuable points were
dropped, and yet the team was in with a chance of the runners-up plagues,
but for injury, I feel that the team would have finished in this position.
The Presidents Cup seems to bring out the best in our Junior Team, This
was justified when they qualified for the quarter-fiml stage-against
Carrigaline. This game was played on Patricks Day and started with Leeside
looking much the better side. Disaster struck when an intended cross by
the Carrigaline winger finished up in the back of the net. Late in the
game Leeside conceded an O.G. and finished whatever chance they had of
advancing. This is the second year in succession that Leeside have reached
this stage, mybe third time lucky next season. The team met strong
opposition in the County, Saxone and A.O.H Cups and so went out in the
early stages.
For the first time in many years the Club entered a Youths Team in the
League, The team showed some very good individual talent but in a section
of very high standard they did not compete very well. In the Murphy Cup
they were drawn against the mighty Tramore Athletic at Leeside Park, and
what a cracking performance this was by the Leeside lads. In the early
stages of the game the local lads took the Tramore defence apart and went
into a 2-goal lead. Tramore showing great character pulled this lead back,
They then went into the lead, but to the final whistle absorbed some
fierce pressure in a very fine game of football. Well done to Mick
Considine, Players and all involved in the team.
Qne of the most enjoyable events of the season was the Midleton School
Boys League. Leeside were represented here by an under nine axd
under-twelve team. Truly these lads provided great entertainment for the
largest crowd that came to see them play. All credit here goes to Mr.
Elliot and friends who trained and organised these teams. Hopefully next
season with a little more help, these lads will play in the Cork School
Boys Leagues.
Our Leading Goal Scorers for the season were-,
(Junior) Raymnd O'Connor for the second year running with
34 goals and
Frank Horgan with. 10 goals for the Youths team,
Our Annual Social was held this year at the John Barleycorn Inn and turned
out to be a very enjoyable night indeed. We took the opportunity to
present the Martin O Neill Perpetual Player of the Year Troply to Gerard
Lambe, who worked so hard for the team this season. Congratulations
Gerard.Congratulations also to Ken Walsh, who was chosen as our Youths
Player of the Year.
Our Annual Patricks Day run was again very successful. I would like to
thank everybody involved in the success of this event.
