THE SEASON 2002/2003 HISTORY 2002/2003 It was a long hard season for both teams ,the only highlight being the winning of the Mossy Linnae cup by the premier team at the end of the season.Ger o Mahony scoring the winning goal with five minutes to go against a very good Coachford side.The premier team finished in the lower half of the table while the first team managed by John O Sullivan finished mid table.Gerry Holland was manager of the premier team for the first time and a great job in keeping them in the premier league after a very poor start and also winnning the Linnane cup. Below are some of the reports from both teams through out the year. 25/01/03 LEAGUE 1B VILLAGE UTD 1 LEESIDE B 1 MARTIN BUCKLEY Leeside fell behind to a first half goal in a game they had to win to have any chance of winning the league. they battled hard to get back in the game and got a deserved equaliser in the 70th minute when Martin Buckley headed in Damian O Learys cornor kick. Leeside pressed hard for the winner and left themselfs exposed at the back.Paul Hayes and Martin Buckley came close to getting a winner for Leeside . 26/01/03 PREMIER LEAGUE LEESIDE 0 COACHFORD 1 Leesides premier team have been plunged right back into the relagation battle with a disapointing loss to bottom team coachford.the first half was a poor half with no clearcut chances for either side .Coachford went ahead in the 55th minute when keeper Dermot O Brien was lobbed from out the field.Leeside pressed hard for an equaliser and two great chances fell to Kieran Mullins andTommy Gettings both were put wide.despite having most of the possesion Leeside could not break down a resalute Coachford defence.
19/1/03 AOH CUP LEESIDE 0 MAYMOUNT 1 Leeside bowed out of the A.OH. Cup to a last minute goal,Leeside were without the services of Conor O leary, Stephen Walsh and Derek Delea all injured. The first half was a very poor half with little chances for either side, Leeside started the second half the better team and had chances with Ray Gallagher two headers and John Corcoran with a shot from outside the box saved by the keeper, Maymount finished the better team and a string of excellent saves by keeper Dermot O Brien kept Leeside in the game, until the last minute when a cross from the left hand side was headed in at the near post. Leeside had no time to recover from this blow. Best for Leeside were Dermot O Brien, Mick Coughlan and Ray Gallagher. LEESIDE 1 ROCKVILLA 0 Kieran Mullins scored after twenty five minutes with a direct free kick and never looked like conceding.Best players were joe lyons and Kieran Murphy.
LEAGUE 1B LEESIDE B V ST JOHN BOSCOS LEESIDE 3 BOSCOS 2 Leesides second team won a great game against Boscos last Sunday coming from behind on two occasions.Leesides scores came from Barry Lamb,Sean Dunne and youth player Brian O Sullivan.
PREMIER LEAGUE. COACHFORD V LEESIDE ROCKVILLA 0 LEESIDE 0 Leeside played out a scoreless draw with rivals Coachford.Craig Donnelly had the best chance for Leeside in a game that was dominated by both defences. PREMIER LEAGUE. BALLINHASSIG V LEESIDE . BHASSIG 0 LEESIDE 2 Leeside won a good game away to Ballinhassig were Dermot O Brien was in great form in goal for Leeside.Craig Donnelly put Leeside in front and Connor O Leary scored there second when his shot from far out bounced over the keeper and into the net.
SUN 17/11/02. A.O.H CUP WILTON V LEESIDE. WILTON 0 LEESIDE 2 CRAIG DONNELLY (2) Leeside were away to first divison Wilton in the A.O.H cup last sunday and they came away with a very good two goals to nil win.Leeside were eager to bounce back from there league defeat last week and took the game to Wilton from the start.Leesides goals came from Craig Donnelly,others to play well for Leeside were Connor O'Leary and Joe lyons. SAT 16/11/02. AOH CUP. LEESIDE B V MAYFIELD. Leeside 2 Mayfield 3 Paul Hayes Barry Brady. Leesides b team were involved in an A.O.H. cup thriller last Saturday before loseing to Mayfield by 3 goals to 2.Leeside took the lead from a Paul Hayes header.Mayfield equalised soon after only for Leeside to take the lead again through Barry Brady.Leeside tried hard to hold onto this lead but couldn't keep out there higher ranked opposition who after equualising went on to score a late winner .Best for Leeside were Paul Hayes and young Brian O'Sullivan who had a great game in midfield.
SUN 10/11/02 A.O.H CUP BLARNEY STREET V LEESIDE B. B.STREET 2 LEESIDE 5 Leesides second team were away on Sunday in the A.O.H cup and progressed to the next round after beating Blarney Street by five goals to two.Leeside now go on to play Mayfield next weekend. SAT 9/11/02 PREMIER LEAGUE LEESIDE V KINSALE. LEESIDE 1 KINSALE 2 CRAIG DONNELLY. Leeside were at home to Kinsale in the league last Saturday and after a brave performance went down by two goals to one.Leeside were unlucky not to draw this game after a storming last five minutes when they got a goal back, were denied a penalty and had two men sent off. Kinsale started the better and were two goals up after fifteen minutes.Peter Jones caused all sorts of problems for Leeside early on were he scored one goal and set up the other to put Kinsale in a comanding lead.Leeside had a lot of the ball as Kinsale were quiet happy to sit back on there two goal lead.Leeside never really troubled the Kinsale defence in the first half and went in at half time two down.The second half was much the same as Leeside pushed forward but the Kinsale defence allways looked very comfortable and gave very little away.As the game wore on Leeside began to get in behind the Kinsale defence and nearly scored after Derek Delea shot over the bar from eighteen yards after Craig Donnelly had pulled a great ball back to him.Leeside got a goal back with five minutes to go ,Derek Delea played a great ball over the top and in behind the Kinsale defence for Kieran Murphy who ran in the by line before cutting the ball back for Donnelly ,His shot was saved by the keeper but the ball rebounded to Connor O'Leary but the keeper again saved only for the ball to fall to Donnelly who forced the ball home from five yards.Leeside now had there tails up and went after an equalizer pushing Stephen Walsh up to center forward and it was Stephen who was taken down in the box after a great move involving a number of players in the last minute of the game,to the dismay of the Leeside players and bench the ref who was in a great position waved play on ,Two of the Leeside players verbal disapproval of his decison resulted in both being sent off and with that any chance of Leeside salvageing a point. Best for Leeside were Jimmy BarO'Sullivan and Connor O'Leary.
SUN 3/11/02 F.A.I JUNIOR CUP LEESIDE V COLLEGE CORINTHIANS LEESIDE 1 C.CORINTHIANS 2 Craig Donnelly Leeside were at home on Sunday morning in the F.A.I junior Cup and after a poor performance lost in extra time by two goals to one.This was a very poor morning for football the wind and rain playing a big part in the game.Leeside started with the wind at there backs and scored in the first half through Craig Donnelly.Leeside held this lead untill twelve minutes into the second half when College Corinthians equalized from a penalty.Leesides best chance of the second half came with about fifteen minutes to go ,Craig Donnelly got in behind his marker and played a great ball across the goal but Colin Ahern arrived a fraction to late to force the ball home.Corinthians had much the better of the second half but like Leeside failed to create any real chances and so the game went to extra time were Corinthians got the all important goal to sent them into the next round. Best for Leeside were M .Coughlan and S.Walsh. SUN 27/10/02 PREMIER LEAGUE TOGHER V LEESIDE. TOGHER 1 LEESIDE 2 DEREK DELEA CRAIG DONNELLY. Leeside keeper Dermot O Brien was in great form to help his side to a great 2-1 win over leaders Togher. This was one of the few games played on a stormy weekend and leaders Togher were expected to top the bill at there home ground Clashduv Road.Togher started the better playing with the breeze at there backs put a lot of pressure on Leeside but found keeper Dermot O Brien in great form.Leeside were pleased to hear the half time whistle going in at nil all.Leeside started the second half brightly and went in front after five minutes,Colin Ahern played a long ball over the top and Derek Delea beat the Togher keeper to the ball to put Leeside in front.Leeside went two up with twenty minutes to go ,a great Colin Ahern shot was saved by the Togher keeper but the ball fell to Craig Donnelly to put Leeside two up. The home side did battle back and with four minutes to go Keith O Connell scored after Willie O'Brien crossed.Togher now pilled on the pressure but found Dermot O'Brien in great form, time and again he saved Leeside and he saved superbly in the last minute after Packie O'Connor got on the end of Willie O'Briens cross. Gerry Holland was very happy with the three points and praised his team for the way they battled throughout the game. Best for Leeside were Derek Delea and Dermot O'Brien
SAT 19/10/02. LEAGUE 1B LEESIDE V ST JOHN BOSCOS. LEESIDE 2 BOSCOS 0 JOE LYONS (2) Leesides b team were at home to Boscos in the league on Saturday and in very poor conditions won a very good game by two goals to nil.Both goals came from the Joe Lyons. SUN 13/10/02 F.A.I. JUNIOR CUP TOGHER ROVERS V LEESIDE A TOGHER 2 LEESIDE 3 AET. STEPHEN WALSH ,CONNOR O LEARY, DEREK DELEA. Leeside were away to Togher Rovers in the F.A.I junior cup on Sunday and came away with a win after extra time.Togher took the lead early on ,Leeside got back on level terms after a Thomas Gettings corner was cleared to Stephen Walsh and he scored with a first time shot.Connor O Leary then put Leeside ahead when he scored from another corner.Togher got back on level terms just before half time.There were no more goals and so the game went to extra time, Derek Delea scored with two minutes to go to put Leeside into the next round. Best for Leeside were Thomas Gettings and Connor O Leary. SUN 6/10/02 MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP ROCKMOUNT V LEESIDE A ROCKMOUNT 5 LEESIDE 0 Leesides hope of a run in the the M.J.Cup came to a end abruptly on Sunday loseing to Rockmount.This game was over as a contest well before the final whistle as Rockmount hit Leeside with four goals in the first fifteen minutes.Leeside were not very organised starting the game and found themselves two down after five minutes,Two more goals in the next ten minutes ended the contest.Rockmount added another goal before half time. SUN 21/09/02 PREMIER LEAGUE LEESIDE V BLARNEY LEESIDE 1 BLARNEY 0 DEREK DELEA. Leeside finally get there first win of the season.Leeside were at home to Blarney last Sunday morning and got a great result winning one nil.The winning goal came after just fifteen minutes from Derek Delea.It was backs to the wall from hear on but Leeside hung on to record there first win.Leeside keeper Dermot O Brien was in great form time after time he prevented Blarney from scoring especially in the last minute when he touched a great Blarney shot that looked a certain goal on to the bar .The Blarney keeper was also in great form stoping Kieran Mullins on more than one occasion near the end . Best for Leeside were Derek Delea and keeper Dermot O Brien
SAT 20/09/02. LEAGUE 1B LEESIDE V VILLAGE LEESIDE 1 VILLAGE 1 RONAN AHERN Leeside were at home to leaders Village last Saturday and were very unlucky not to take all three points from this game.For once Leeside started well and went ahead after fifteen minutes through Ronan Ahern.Leeside held this lead untill just before half time when Village scored from a free kick.The second half failed to produce any more goals and so the points were shared .A good result for Leeside keeping them in touch with the leaders. Best for Leeside were Damian O Leary and Ronan Ahern.
SAT 14/09/02. PREMIER LEAGUE PASSAGE V LEESIDE PASSAGE 3 LEESIDE 2 KIERAN MURPHY (2) Leeside were away to Passage in the premier league last Saturday and after a great game were on the wrong side of a 3-2 score line.Once again Leeside started very slowly and found themselves two goals down at half time.Leeside got back into the game early in the second half when Kieran Murphy scored two goals in two minutes after being set up on both occasions by Stephen Walsh.Passage went ahead with ten minutes to go after John Corcoran lost the ball in the middle of the field ,Passage broke and when the cross came in the passage forward had an easy tap in.Leeside came close to drawing level in the last minute.Conor O Leary broke free in the Passage box and as he rounded the keeper he was taken down for a penalty.Derek Delea took the penalty but the Passage sub keeper saved his shot and denied Leeside a vital point. Best for Leeside were Stephen Walsh and Thomas Gettings.
SAT 14/09/02 ST MICHEALS CUP LEESIDE B V ST JOHN BOSCOS. LEESIDE 1 V BOSCOS 1 (AET) 6 -5 AFTER PENALTYS. Leesides second team were at home to Boscos in the first round of the St Michaels cup on Saturday and after a great game went through to the next round after penaltys.Leeside went ahead in the second half after Ray Gallagher scored but Boscos equalized to bring the game to extra time.There were no more goals and so the game went to penaltys were Leeside won by 6-5.
SUN 8/09/02 PREMIER LEAGUE LEESIDE V TOGHER. Leeside 2 Togher 3 Craig Donnelly, Colin Ahern Leeside lost another game in the league last Sunday as there worst start in the league continued.Leeside went into this game with only two points from four games and sitting at the foot of the table needed a win to turn things around .Togher started the game much stronger than the young Leeside team and were two goals up at half time.Leeside came out in the second half a different team and got themselves right back into the game with goals from Craig Donnelly and Colin Ahern .Leeside were now on top and created a few good chances but failed to score.Togher got the winner with ten minutes to go .Craig Donnelly gave away a free kick just out side his own box on the right hand side ,the free kick was floted into the box were the Togher left back rose unchallenged heading the ball into the corner past the Leeside keeper.This was another poor performance from a team who just a few short weeks ago were challenging for this same league.Leeside will have to pick things up before there in very serious trouble. Best for Leeside was Stephen Walsh. SAT 7/09/02 LEAGUE 1B LEESIDE B V PASSAGE Leeside 2 Passage 0 Leesides second string are on a bit of a roll at the moment and followed up on there great win over Hill last Thursday with another two nil win over Passage at Leeside park on Saturday.Johny Sull has this team firing on all cylinders at the moment and if they can keep up this sort of form a trophy won't be very far away.
THUR 5/09/02 LEAGUE 1B HILL CELTIC V LEESIDE B. Hill Celtic 0 Leeside 2 Brian O Sullivan ,Barry Cotter Leeside were away to Hill Celtic last thursday and came away with a great win.This has allways being a very though fixture for Leeside but this young team has all ready shown this year that there afraid of no one.This is a young team and it was two of its youngest who got the goals ,Brian O Sullivan and Barry Cotter.This was a great result for a Leeside team who up to now had played very well but were just that little bit unlucky in there other games. Best for Leeside were Paul Hayes and Brian O Sullivan
TUE 3/09/02. PREMIER LEAGUE. ROCKVILLA V LEESIDE. Rockvilla 3 Leeside 3 Connor O Leary ,Derek Delea ,og Leeside were away to Rockvilla tonight still looking for there first win of the season but only managed a 3 all draw .Leeside were lucky not to lose only drawing level with a few minutes to go from a Derek Delea penalty.Rockvilla who like Leeside haven't had the best of starts went ahead early on .Leeside equalized through Connor O Leary and then went ahead through an own goal.Rockvilla came right back into it and went 3-2 up in an absorbing game.Leesides Craig Donnelly had a few chances in between but last years golden boot winner is finding it hard to get off the mark this year.Leeside had to wait untill the final few minutes to draw level through Dereks penalty. Best for Leeside Connor O Leary ,Jimmy Bar O Sullivan .
SUN 1/09/02 PREMIER LEAGUE KINSALE V LEESIDE. KINSALE 2 LEESIDE 0. Leeside were away to Kinsale in vital need of three points.One point from the first two games is not the start Gerry wanted and his young side found themselves in more trouble on Sunday.Kinsale were in control right throughout the game and ran out easy winners on a score line of two goals to nil.One point now from three games and the big guns are slowly pulling away ,Leeside will have to start winning a few games soon if they don't want to find themselves in trouble at the end of the season.
SAT31/08/02 LEAGUE 1B GREENWOOD V LEESIDE. Greenwood 1 Leeside 0 Leeside were away to Greenwood last Sat and put up a great performance before loseing 1nil.Leeside were on top for most of the game but couldn't put the ball in the Greenwood net. Leeside payed the price for all those missed chances when Greenwood scored the only goal of the game with five minutes to go.Ed O Mahony was in great form through out the game for Leeside and showed the spirit that the lads need if they have ambitions of winning this league. Best for Leeside were Ed O Mahony and Sean Dunn.
THUR 29/08/02. LEAGUE 1B. GLENVALE V LEESIDE. Glenvale 1 Leeside 1 Damian O Leary. Leesides second team were away to Glenvale in there second match of the season and felt they could win this one if they played to there form.Leeside played well last Sunday and felt they left the game after them and didn't want to do the same tonight.Leeside started very slowly and never took the game to Glenvale and fell behind in the first half.This goal woke Leeside up as they chased an equalizer but as hard as they tried they couldn't break down a well organised Glenvale defence.Leeside piled on the the pressure and got the goal they needed with five minutes to go when Damian O Leary scored .Relief all round for John Sull and the lads and a good point earned.This was another good performance but the lads will have to play from the start and not wait to go a goal or two down before they decide they want to play. Best for Leeside was Colin Ahern.
TUE 27/08/02. PREMIER LEAGUE. LEESIDE V MAYMOUNT. Leeside 1 Maymount 1 K Mullins. Leeside were at home to newly promoted Maymount on Tuesday night.Goal keeper come center forward Kieran Mullins was the hero for Leeside scoring the equalizer early in the second half.Maymount started the game full of confidence and took the game to Leeside from the start .Maymount took the lead in the first quarter and were in total control .Leeside were lucky to go in at half time only a goal down .Leeside came out a different team and took the game to Maymount from the start .Leesides chances improved early on when a Maymount player was sent off.Leeside took advantage and Mullins scored .Leeside were now in control and did every thing but score,Mullins had another chance late on but shot over ,Maymount were restricted to breakaways and one of those breakaways late on resulted in Colin Ahern receiving a second yellow card .Gerry was very happy with the point considering the way the first half went ,Leeside had chances in the second half but a draw was a fair result. Best for Leeside were keeper Dermot O' Brien and Kieran Mullins. SAT 24/08/02 PREMIER LEAGUE. LEESIDE V GREENMOUNT LEESIDE 0 GREENMOUNT 1. Leeside were at home to Greenmount in there first game of the new season.Manager Gerry Holland was very confident going into this game after a very good pre season the highlight being the winning of the Midelton cup.Leeside have lost the services of Jermy O Sullivan and Wayne Barrett for the season but have signed a new keeper Dermot O'Brien .John Shine was making a return to Leeside park as manager of Greenmount .Greenmount started the stronger against a young Leeside team and took the lead after 37minutes when a Brendan Cronin shot was deflected past the Leeside keeper to make it one nil.Leeside tried to get back into the game and had two great chances near the end, A great shot from Connor O Leary was put around the post by Bertie Lane and then in the dying moments Damian O Leary some how managed to put the ball over the bar when it seemed like he must score.Leeside were unlucky not to get a share of the spoils and Gerry will have taken a lot of heart from the way the young lads performed. Best for Leeside were Colin Ahern, Thomas Gettings.
SUN 25/08/02. LEAGUE 1B LEESIDE V GLENTHORN CELTIC. LEESIDE 2 GLENTHORN 2. Sean Dunn 2 Leeside were at home to Glenthorn in there first game of the season and were unlucky not to come away with all three points.Leeside took the lead through Sean Dunn only for Glenthorn to draw level and Dunn again gave Leeside the lead only for Glenthorn to draw level in the last few minutes of the game. Best for Leeside were Sean Dunn and Ger O Mahony.
