Lough Gowna

The Heart of Ireland

Nestling in the South West corner of Co. Cavan is the tranquil village of Loch Gowna, which owes its origins and name to the surrounding lake system. The Loch Gowna lakes cover an area of 1,800 acres (728 Hectares) and are known as one of the best course fishing waters in Europe. The lakes are the source of the Erne River, Irelands second largest inland freshwater system.

The Village of Loch Gowna has been judged one of the tidiest villages for the past number of years. Visitors can take leisurely country strolls along developed walkways through wildlife sanctuaries amid the natural flora and fauna. There is also much evidence of ancient settlement.

Loch Gowna is a series of individual and interconnecting freshwater lakes meandering silently between drumlins. This freshwater system has a plentiful stock of Perch, Bream, Tench, Roach, Pike, Hybrids and the occasional Brown Trout- A fishermans Paradise.

Loch Gowna & Upper Erne Anglers Association organize angling competitions annually. These include the Kopcke Trading International and the Jimmy Sloane Memorial. Hooked International, a sectional event of "The King of Clubs" has also been held on Loch Gowna on a number of occasions. The village is just a short journey from some of Irelands best 18 hole golf course - Slieve Russell at Ballyconnell.
