Newsletter No. 1   2003 - 2004

News from the AGM!

The AGM was held on 3rd October and was reasonably well attended. After the AGM, I think your Secretary is the only one who has been re-cycled from last year! Our new Diving Officer is Richie O’Donnell. The coffers will be minded by Órla Malone. Our new chairman is Tom McDonnell (well he’s been around before too!). Training Officer, Dónal Carroll. Looking after the equipment will be Gerry Austin. Assistant Training Officer will be Trina Mulryan and Frank Corr will be looking after PR and social activity.

Clubman of the Year

After reading the Citation praising him for a lot of Pulling and Dragging, and doing a lot of diving, the outgoing Chairman, Suzy Kennedy said the unanimous decision was to award Richie O’Donnell the Clubman of the Year award (presented to the club by Ronnie Hurley).

(And then he couldn’t turn down the nomination for Diving Officer!)

Some dates for your calendar

Open Nights for new members in the Club will be 28th October and 4th November. The Pool will be starting officially on 11th November and will be booked until 16th December. Easter is early next year, so after Christmas, the pool will be from 5th January to 16th March.

Congratulations !

Since the last Newsletter, the Club has a new Club Diver: Trina Mulryan. And we have three new Diver Cox’ns: Richie O’Donnell, Frank Corr and Toni McNamara. Congrats to all!

Weekend in Killary…?

We got a flyer from Shane Gray offering a Club Christmas “do”. It is a package for 2 nights B&B, 1 dinner, 4 boat dives. €150 all in. Would a group be interested? You can let us know.

Keeping in contact

Diving Officer, Richie will be keeping in regular contact as follows. We will try to continue Toni’s group texting. Richie will also set up a Personal Greeting which we can all phone and listen to! So, to hear Richie’s sweet voice telling you about diving plans for the weekend, phone after midday Thursday to

087 2965694

This dummy phone will not be answered! See below if you wish to speak to the real Richie.

Dive Season 2002-2003

To all members of the Club

Dear Member

The committee has asked me to write to you.
We wish to call a meeting of all active divers to discuss issues associated with
safety in diving. The Committee expects that all active divers will attend this meeting.
Venue Arena Pool Lecture Theatre, University of Limerick
Time 20.45
Date next Thursday 14th August 2003

Dear Diver,

There have been about 40 incidents this season to date but reporting has fallen off in the last month. Here are some of the points that have arisen recently:

1. To avoid out of air situations buddies should carefully monitor each others' air supplies and time the dive accordingly. 50 bar may not be enough to get to the surface if leading a large trainee. Recall that we have a signal for 100 bar left, it is effectively a karate chop half way up the opposite arm, the PADI signal is two clenched fists (a double reserve signal).

2. If an out of air situation occurs the alternative air supply (if carried) should be switched on and instantly usable. It is likely that a person out of air will just take the regulator out of your mouth, so be prepared for this. An out of air situation is a serious incident and an Incident Form should be submitted with the details.

3. Do you need to deploy a delayed surface marker buoy? Freeflows have occurred this year (and last year) where divers have inflated the buoy using a regulator. If possible use the exhaust gases for inflation or buy a (expensive) delayed surface marker buoy with integrated mini-cylinder.

4. Many divers are now using DIN fittings and use plastic blanks to protect the screw thread when not in use. If the cylinder is accidentally knocked on with a plastic blank fitted it has the effect of shooting the blank out at high speed with potential injury to anyone nearby, so be careful.

5. It is the time of year that many clubs have a week away. Be aware that divers and their gear have to be looked after during the week. Try at least to thoroughly rinse your regulator after each dive or if inconvenient at the end of the day's diving activities.

6. If you have any part of your gear serviced or replaced make sure it has been fitted and is working properly on land. Also advise your buddy about the gear.

Finally a reminder from my report in the Spring 2003 issue of SubSea. Any incidents that could lead to an insurance claim or involve personal injury or damage to equipment (yours or a third party) should be sent directly to Head Office on the official form. Minor incidents can be sent directly to me by telephone, e-mail or post (if in doubt send it to Head Office).

Safe diving,

Russell Higgs

Newsletter No. 4   2002 - 2003

Hi Everybody!

This is only the fourth Newsletter of the year. However, increasingly, everybody is being kept in touch by a text messages from the Diving Officer, and by emails sent out by Brian O’Leary. If you are not receiving these messages please let one of the committee know and we’ll get you on the list.

Also, Brian puts recent messages on the Website: address given below. (Thanks Brian!)

Congratulations!

Reuter reports that Ciarán Enright proposed to Yvonne while in a helicopter sipping champagne! So, good luck to them both for the future!

We wish Colum McCarthy all the best while he is in the UK for 3 months becoming Fireman Colum!

Diving Congratulations!

Recent Club Divers: Lisa Egan, Jerry Austen, Edel McMahon.

Rescue Diver: Dónal Carroll.

Special thanks

Thanks to Arlene Mellett for the present of two life jackets for the boat! This was unexpected, but very appreciated. Thanks, Arlene.

Contacting the DO

Toni welcomes txt msgs! But please sign your name… otherwise she might not know who sent it!

The boat… and cox’ns

The situation about the boat use and insurance has been clarified. The important detail is that a qualified cox’n must be in the boat at all times…. It is NOT good enough to have the qualified cox’n diving and the trainee cox’n in the boat.

Notes:

August Bank Holiday: The idea is to launch and dive from Dunbeg on the Saturday. Diving for the rest of the weekend will be out of Quilty.

(Sorry to anyone who had psyched up for going to Sligo. However, only 7 had committed themselves for the trip and some of those were for only 1 day. There was only definite towing of the boat in one direction! Hope Dunbeg / Quilty will be a good alternative.)

The AGM

Some news from the AGM.

New Committee

Our new Diving Officer is Toni McNamara. Chairman is Suzy Kennedy. Secretary is John Breen. Brian Kearney is (Acting) Treasurer. Tomás Hanrahan is the Equipment Officer. Finbarr O’Carroll is the Training Officer and Tom McDonnell is the Assistant Training Officer.

Clubperson of the Year

Congrats to Frank Corr.

Membership Fees

It was decided at the AGM to increase the annual membership fees by €50. Fees for Family Members, Snorkellers etc. will be adjusted on the usual scale. This means that the Club Membership costs €270 if paid before Christmas and €290 if paid after Christmas.

The increase in fees was proposed because the Club’s finances are on a very tight budget. CFT are increasing their fee this year by €22 and the CFT Starter Pack for new members is going up by €10. The fees for new Trainees will be €380 (including the Starter Pack + 1-Star Diver Certificate). PADI Crossover membership €335 (Full membership + Starter Pack). Remember we all get good value from the Club and it is very cheap when you compare it to prices in local golf clubs!

Junior Snorkellers

It was decided at AGM that in future any new Junior Snorkellers will have to be part of a Family Membership.

The Pool

Suzy and Brian have been talking to the new management at the UL Arena 50 metre pool. The deal is that we get 2 full lanes (wider than the old pool, full 50 metre lengths and deeper). Scuba equipment allowed. And the lectures will be in a room near the pool. So, no excuses this year.

Times for the Pool

9pm to 9.50pm.

Lectures will start at 7.45pm sharp to allow members to be ready for the pool.

Dates for the Pool

November 19th and 26th; December 3rd, 10th and 17th. After Christmas we will be back in the Pool on 7th January 2003.

Open Days

Open Days are being advertised for the 12th and 19th November. New members will be introduced to the Club and scuba diving in a class room in the (Old) Sports’ Building (our usual haunt). So please tell anyone you know who is interested to turn up at 7.45pm.

Equipment

All rental equipment, and the rental, is to be returned immediately to Tomás Hanrahan.

Club Website

The web address for the club is

www.limericksubaquaclub.org

Brian O’Leary has been sorting out the site and it looks much better already. Hopefully we can maintain it and post newsletters and announcements. Let us know what you want to see there.
