GLOSSARY
Auction: the aggregate of all bids, passes, doubles and redoubles in a particular game.
Bid: an undertaking to win at least a number of tricks, and the nomination of one of the four suits as trump or the choice of having no trump for a particular game.
Bidding: exactly the same meaning as Auction. See above.
Board: a wallet, or any other device, containing four pockets where the cards of the four players are placed.
Contract: the last bid for a particular game, before the final three consecutive passes, whether or not it is followed by double or redouble.
Contract just made- to make a contract: when Declarer wins exactly the number of tricks bid for.
Contract going down: when Declarer wins less tricks than bid for.
Dealer: the player designated to deal the cards for a particular game.
Declarer: the player who, for a particular game, belongs to the pair that bids the contract, and who was the first in the pair to have bid the suit mentioned in the contract, or No trump if that is the case.
Double: what a player can say, at his turn to bid, after a bid from a player of the other side, if he wants to increase the scoring, either his side’s gain if the contract goes down, or the other side’s gain if the contract is made, with or without overtricks, providing that particular doubled bid becomes the contract.
Dummy: Declarer’s partner.
Establish a card: make a card become a winner.
Finessing: trying to get a trick with a card a bit lower than a winner.
Follow suit: play a card of the suit that has been led for a particular trick.
Game contract: a contract that, if made, with or without overtricks, will give a trick score of at least 100 points.
Game bonus: 300 points, added to the trick points, and overtrick points if any, when a game contract is made, with or without overtricks.
Grand slam: a contract at the 7 level(bidding for thirteen tricks).
Hand: the thirteen cards originally dealt to a player.
Major suits: Hearts and Spades.
Minor suits: Clubs and Diamonds.
No trump: a choice a player can make when bidding, to have no particular trump suit for a particular game.
Opening lead: the first card played for a particular game, always by the player sitting on Declarer’s left.
Overtrick: each trick won by Declarer in excess of the contract.
Overtrick points: 20 points for each overtrick if the trump is a minor suit, and 30 points for each overtrick if the trump is a major suit or if there is no trump.
Part-score: 90 or fewer trick points for one particular game.
Part-score bonus: 50 points, added to the trick points, and overtrick points if any, when a part-score contract is made, with or without overtricks.
Pass: what a player can say, at his turn to bid, if he does not want to bid, double or redouble.
Post-mortem: a discussion about the game when the play of the cards is over.
Premium bonus: 50 points added to the score when a doubled contract is made, with or without overtricks, or 100 points added to the score when a redoubled contract is made, with or without overtricks.
Redouble: what a player can say, at his turn to bid, if he wants to increase the scoring a lot, but only if his side’s bid has been doubled by a player of the other side, and if no other bid has been made after that particular double. His side’s gain is increased a lot if the contract is made, with or without overtricks, and the other side’s gain is increased a lot if the contract goes down, providing that particular redoubled bid becomes the contract.
Round: part of a bridge session played without movement of players.
Ruffing: the playing of a trump card when one cannot follow suit.
Score sheet: a sheet of paper where all the scores for a particular board are entered.
Small slam: a contract at the 6 level(bidding for at least twelve tricks).
Suit: one of the four groups of cards: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades.
Tournament: a bridge session involving many tables of players, with a comparison of the scores at the end.
Trick: a group of four cards, one contributed by each player in rotation.
Trick points: points got by Declarer’s side for fulfilling the contract.
In a minor suit contract, it is 20 points for each trick from the seventh.
In a major suit contract, it is 30 points for each trick from the seventh.
In a No trump contract, it is 40 points for the seventh trick, and 30 points for each trick from the eighth.
Trump suit: the suit named in the contract. During the play of the cards, it beats any other suit, if one cannot follow suit.
Undertrick: each trick by which Declarer’s side falls short of fulfilling the contract.
Undertrick points: 50 points per undertrick.
Winner: a card that cannot be beaten.
