When were tractors invented?
Tractors were first used during the 1870's. These tractors, called traction engines were
large four-wheeled machines driven by steam. Prior to the tractor all work on the farm had
been done by the horse. The early tractor provided enough power to pull as many as 40
ploughs, but the early machines were extremely awkward.
They were soon replaced by smaller machines with internal combustion engines. These
machines could do almost all field work but unfortunately they were too low to pull a
cultivator through tall crops. Then, in the 1920's, the all purpose tractor was developed.
Today tractors are the chief source of power on most farms
Modern tractors have both speed and power and are easy to operate. The tractors engine
gives the power to pull, lift and drive many kinds of machines. Farm tractors are usually
ran on diesel. They are a great help to farmers.
