Report A/B
Race: This years Swords Grand Prix
moved from its more usual Ballyboughal -Nags Head -Naul
circuit to a circuit most would remember as that used by
the Liam Toolin circuit . Five times up theNags Head from
the more difficult side for the combined A/'B's was going
to be testing enough without the strong winds &
driving rain that the riders had to contend with. The
race started in Ballyboughal and headed for the old
Balbriggan Road, then travelled north to turn at the Five
Roads and then left and up the Nags Head from a direction
that presented the riders with a more challenging climb
that the races more usual route. The A bunch combined
well with everone riding 'up & over' and caught the B
bunch just before the hit the climb on Lap 1. The bunch
hit the climb hard and some riders may have
underestimated just how long it was and how it steepens
towards the top as the bunch was well and truly split
with about fifteen A's and ten B's getting clear before
the race crested the hill for the first time.
With the day that was in it, all sections of the course
presented difficulties, battling into the wind on the
decent, crosswind on the next section and a tailwind
driving the speed up to 40mph on the main road ..........and
then the climb!!!! These conditions caused the break to
reduce slightly even before the break attacked the hill
for the second time and by the time they reach the top it
was down to the six A riders who would eventually fight
out for the final placings, and two B's John Dooras (Sorrento)
& Paddy Kelly (Bray). All eight riders worked hard in
the break, and they had to, as the bunch were only at 30
sec. The two B riders were still in contention up to the
bell, when a surge on the hill saw the six A's go clear .
Cycleways had numerical advantage with 3 riders in the
break, Mark Cassidy, Philip Finegan & Aidan Crowley,
against Brian Keane (Dublin Wheelers) and Greg Swinard
& Shane Baker (Usher). Mark Cassidy attacked &
got a gap just before Ballyboughal while his teamates sat
on, forcing Shane, Brian & Greg to do the chasing.
Mark held them off for quite a few miles but all six were
back together before last time up the climb to the finish.
Brian Keane (DWCC) forced the pace last time up as he had
been strongest on the climb each time before. He
stretched out the lads slightly but failed to lose either
Cassidy or Finegan. One more big attack from the Dublin
Wheelers rider nearly paid off but Finegan got by him
with 30 yards to go only to be pipped by teamate Mark
Cassidy. 3rd place went to Brian Keane(DWCC) with Shane
Baker (Usher) 4th @ 10 sec, and Aidan Crowley (Cycleways)
,Greg Swinard (Usher) another 30 sec back. A second win
in two days for Mark (and a second r-up spot for Philip!!!)
and the ideal was to finish off his racing season in
Ireland as he heads off to France to ride with VC La
Pomme.
A great talent and still only nineteen years of age.

This year the race was run over the old Liam Toolin
circuit which would give ample opportunity for attacks on
the long climb. The race would consist od 2 x 12 mile
laps and then a 3 mile run in to an excellent sited
finish. A small group of Juniors were given a 2 minute h/cap
and the chasing Vets/C's had a bit of work to do if they
ever wanted to see them again. As it was they were caught
just before they hit the climb for the second time. Sean
Bracken (Usher), who later told me that he especially
wanted to ride this circuit, launched attack after attack
on the climb and fairly strung out the bunch. As he
crested the hill only Stephen McKenna (Stamullen MD) had
been able to respond to his repeated assault. The rest of
the bunch came back together on the decent, but Stephen
& Sean Bracken were clear. The race for the remaining
places started in earnest when they hit Ballboughal and
split up over the final 3 miles as Sean & Stephen
battled it out for the win. To lead it out or not to lead
it out? Stephen thought it might be best to come off the
wheel, which he did but Sean dug deep and held on to win
by half a wheel. A magnificent performance from Stephen
who heads off soon for the Junior Tour and for Sean it
marked a full recovery from the broken pelvis that he
sustained earlier in the year at the Gorey 3 Day

/ 8
laps of Boot Inn circuit (40 miles)
This race was run over 7 laps of the near
forgotten Boot Inn course and was a race for all
categories run on a h/cap basis. By lap three the B, C
& Vets categories were together. Small
groups of riders had tried in vain to escape this bunch but
all were back in the fold when Brian Aherne (Naas)
and Phil Finegan (Cycleways) came accross after breaking
clear from the chasing A group. With the rest of the A's
fast approaching, there was no time to hang around and
both riders attacked straight away. Both riders managed
to stay clear despite some disconserting noises
coming from Finegan's loosening saddle. The sprint
for the line was taken by Aherne, with Finegan in close
attendance. Next in, just a few seconds in arrears was a
group of three riders lead by the newly crowned Irish
Criterium Champion, Paul Doyle (Deeside), from Robert
Whelan (Avonmore) and Laurence Roche (Team BH). The
bunch sprint for 6th place was taken by local rider,
Simon Whelan (McNally Swords) in a tight finish.
Great turnout of Swords riders, I
counted 17!

Swords
McNally Grand Prix, Ballyboughal
Sunday 11th August
2002
(A/B Race)
A strong field contested the Swords McNally Grand Prix
over six laps of the Ballyboughal - Naul course. One of
the pre-race favourites, Stephen O'Sullivan (unatt) made
an early exit with a broken chain, and a crash on the
slippery roads on lap 1 at the Ballyboughal Monument
delayed some others. The main move of the day came on the
2nd time up the Nags head when Simon Whelan (McNally
Swords) attacked and went clear with 4 riders incl Paddy
Moriarty (Dub Skip), Shane Baker(Usher), Peter Dunne (Avonmore)
and Brian Lennon (St Tiernans). Two laps later the break
was down to three riders(Moriarty,Whelan & Lennon)
and the gap was hovering between 1 an 2 minutes. On the
second last time up the Nag's, Moriarty launched a savage
& decisive attack on a 53x16 and his fellow escapees
were unable to respond. The Team Ireland Initiative rider
then proceeded to open up an unasailable gap over the
closing laps, while Whelan and Lennon held off a strong
chasing group. This group which incl three Cycleways
riders made serious inroads into the gap over the closing
miles but after being out there for so long Whelan and
Lennon weren't going to be denied and dug deep to hold
them off. Paddy Moriarty finished a clear and worthy
winner and heads off now to partake in the Surrey 5 Day.
(C/J/V Race)
An early attack by Mark Nestor (Shannonside) was joined
by local rider Anthony McMahon and this duo stayed clear
for the rest of the race with both riders sharing the
load while Nestor lead on the climbs, the heavier McMahon
drove it on the faster sections. Meanwhile an abundance
of Swords riders in chasing bunch made sure that these
two stayed clear and after a hard race they sportingly
crossed the line together to take 1st Junior and 1st Vet.
Over the closing stages Jason Ludgate escaped from the
bunch to take 1st C.

Sunday
22nd July 2001
This
year's race incorporating the Kathleen O'Sullivan
Memorial Trophy was a fitting tribute to a great lady
with great commitment from all the club members under the
direction of race organiser Richie McNamara, and spirited
racing from all our riders. I wont go into thanking all
who contributed, but suffice to say it was an event in
which we as a club can all take great pride. The morning
started with Sean Rock placing 4th in the U14 event, and
local lads Keith Daly(Drog Wh), Chris O'Hare(Balb CC) and
Colm Crawley(Balb CC) dominating the U16 event despite
being total outnumbered by the lads from Bray, placing 1st,2nd
& 4th respectively.
<U/age Photos>
In the main event both out A riders, Simon & Pepe,
were riding quite well with Simon getting into most of
the early breaks but unfortunately missing the main move
on lap 3, but Pepe infiltrated this one. This break of
about ten riders contained a lot of heavy hitters incl.
Michael McNena and some very strong riders from the North.
Their advantage grew steadily with all incl. our own Pepe
riding strongly. With a man in the break it was up to the
teams that missed out to chase. Simon got into the
chasing group of riders but these weren't making any
ground on the leaders and I suppose they wouldn't be too
keen on bringing Simon up anyway. This was the second
week in a row that Pepe had got into the decisive break
and was doing quite well until constant attacks on the
final lap eventually wore him down. Only one B rider had
made it into the lead groups so it left 5 places to fight
for and we were ably represented by Matt Kelly, Stephen
Rock, Brendan Conway, Tony O'Malley, Sean Lally and Jason
Kelly. Many of our riders tried to get clear but to no
avail until Matt broke with Len Corrigan(DWCC) with two
laps to go. When the gap got to 300 metres Sean jumped
across to double our advantage. Brendan Conway came very
close to getting across also but just couldn't get those
last ten yards. The lead trio then pressed home their
advantage ably protected by the remaining Swords riders
in the pack. Three hundred yards from the final corner
Matt, on a signal from Sean, launched himself taking the
DWCC rider by surprise. Both riders were tiring on the
sprint for the line but Matt had gained enough distance
to take it and 2nd placed B rider. With equal prizes for
A and B riders it meant that there were still 3 places to
contest and we still had 4 riders in the bunch to contest
them. Despite attacks from all 4 it came down to a bunch
sprint with Jason attacking into the last corner but
cramped in the straight and finished 7th B, missing 6th
spot by inches. Club President, Johnny O'Sullivan
presented the Kathleen O'Sullivan Memorial Trophy to
Overall winner Michael McMena(VC La Pomme) but the
loudest cheer was reserved for 2nd B, Matt. But we weren't
finished cheering yet because Mick Rock and Pat Halpin
took the first two spots in the Vets race!!!
