St. Moling's
Church.
It is difficult to get an
exact date for the building of the present church. According to
O'Donovan it was built about 1828. Grattan-Flood tells us that it was
built by Rev.Walter Sinnott who was curate from 1834 to 1850. It is
fairly certain therefore that the church was built at the time of or
shortly after Catholic Emancipation.
The church which is cruciform in
shape is located in the townsland of Barraglan. The old church was
across the road in the townsland of Glebe close to the site of the
Protestant church which was built in 1824.
Photographic evidence suggests
that the church has had many changes over the years. The belfry seems to
have been added about the turn of the century, replacing a timber
structure to the left of the porch. The stained glass windows of
St.Aidan and St.Bridget in the nave, were ordered from J.Clark and Sons
Dublin in 1901 at a cost of £40. They were restored in 1995 at a cost of
£4,000. The stained glass windows in the porch were originally installed
in 1903. The Crucifixion window over the porch is an addition of the
1980's. Originally the church had three galleries but during restoration
work in the 1970's the transept galleries were removed. In 1993 a winter
chapel was constructed off the east transept.
The
church has a number of important benefactors over the years, especially
the Rath family formally of Garrydaniel Lower. They donated the
graveyard, the sanctuary lamp, some of the stained glass windows, the
Stations of the Cross and a chalice.
Margaret Doyle of Boire, who died in 1976, donated her estate to the
parish. Other smaller donations have also been gratefully received over
the years.

The Parochial House
The Parochial House was originally
a two story dwelling located beside the church. This was replaced in
1968 with a bungalow built by T. & N. Murphy, Builders.
