50 10 31th December 1944 Axis

December 1944 was a tough time for the soldiers of Lt. Gen. Jacob L. Devers Sixth Army Group. They were not only being hindered by the Germans but also by heavy fog and snow which limited air support. While the worlds attention was riveted on the bitter strugle for the Ardennes, the Germans launched an unexpectedly strong counteroffensive against Devers forces on the southern flank of the Allied line in Alsace. The series of ferocious attacks, which started on December 31, 1944, collectively came to be known by the Germans as Operation Nordwind ("North Wind"). The Germans objective was to reach the town of Herrlisheim and build up enough mass to punch through to their forces fighting in Hatten and Rittershoffen thereby pinching off the American VI Corps. salient. Waalhaven

Turns Complexity Date First Side
10 3 10th May 1940 Axis

Waalhaven Airfield, south of Rotterdam. [Best played as axis] Operation 'Fall Gelb' was the German code name for the invasion of the 'low countries.' As part of this invasion large air droppings- and landings were done on and around several Dutch airfields in the hart of Holland. Located south of the strategically important city Rotterdam and nearby bridges, Waalhaven airfield was one of the main targets. Further it was planned that this airfield would be the main gate for the 7th Flieger division. Learned from the Norwegian tragedy (the quick capturing of the Norwegian airfield Sola by German paratroopers) the Dutch high command ordered in mid April of 1940 to quickly improve the defense of key airfields in the hart of Holland. On the early morning of May 10, 1940 German planes attacked the defensive positions on and around Waalhaven airfield, which was now defended by a Dutch Jager battalion and strong AA units. At the same time the 3rd battalion of the 1st German parachute regiment landed around the airfield, expecting only light resistance. Just after the air attack and para droppings, the first waves of Junkers-52 transport planes; carrying the 1st and and 3rd battalions of the 16th air landing regiment landed already on Waalhaven airfield, which was still in strong Dutch hands.

18 5 7th June 1944 Allies

The Canadian 9th Brigade was in a difficult position. Its orders were to advance along the axis Les Buissons - Buron - Authie - Franqueville - Carpiquet with a composite battle group of North Nova Scotia Highlanders, Sherbrook Fusiliers and Cameron Highlanders. Brig. Cunningham was told to keep to the axis of advance as it was hoped a British Brigade would catch up and cover their exposed left flank. As well, the guns of 14 Field Regt were held up, but again it was hoped they would soon be in range. On the other hand, since they landed, no-one had even seen a German tank! Best played as Allies, but can be pbem if you can put up with a few turns of fixed units.

22 7 12th June 1942 Axis

Morning of June 12, 16km SW of El Adem ,( Best played against human or as Axis) In the afternoon of the previous day General Messervy commander of the 7th Armored Division received intelligence that that the German 21st Panzer Division was engaged around the Knightsbridge box and the 15th Panzer Division was over 20km to the SE advancing on the El Adem positions. With two freshly rearmed and supplied armored brigades at his disposal, the 2nd and 4th, he planned to exploit this gap between the German Divisions. Accordingly, he ordered the tank brigades to assemble south of the small village of Bir Lefa and prepare to assault the 15th Panzers in the morning. If all went well the 15th would be routed and then the armored brigades could swing NW and attack the rear of the 21st in conjunction with the 1st armored division advancing from the north. Unknown to British command, however, was that the German wireless intercept service had reported the planned attack to Rommel almost as soon as Messervy had radioed his orders to His brigades. Thus fore warned Rommel ordered the 21st to disengage from Knightsbridge and move east during the night while the 15th prepared to meet the coming attack. The morning found both of the British brigades sitting motionless awaiting final orders from Messervy that would never come for the general was hiding in a small wadi surrounded by elements of 90th light moving on El Adem. Rommel ordered both panzer divisions to attack, the 15th from the south and the 21st from the west. The outcome of this battle would decide the fate of the Gazala line and Tobruk.

"In December 1941, British troops commenced a new offensive against the Afrika Korps. They fielded over 5 times the number of tanks as the Germans and Italians had combined. (Note: gets rusty from here on in) Rommel was forced to fall back due to being overrun and hold the British advance at Gambut (near the Egyptian border). Gambut was the last German stronghold between the British and Tobruk. Through the fall of Gambut by seige, the way lay clear on December 10th for the British to breakthrough and free Tobruk."
