Kinneigh Closed
Kinneigh was the venue for the latest West Cork table tennis rankings. There was a good turn out for the event, which included under 10, under 12 and under 14 events. The first event of the day saw the U10 girls in action. Amy Buttimer took the title against Kinneigh club mate Jennifer Lawton. Ciara Glenn from Dunmanway took third with the youngest competitor of the day Chloe Mulhall (7yrs) taking 4th.
Due to a large entry the U10 boys was divided into two divisions. Tadgh Williams from the Skibbereen club took his and his club's first ever tournament win beating Munster No.2 Sean Hennessey in a very close and exciting match, with both boys showing tremendous ability. Sean's Kinneigh team mates took 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th. With Skibbereen players taking 7th and 8th. Peter Kelleher took the Division II title with Eoin Barclay (Skibbereen) 2nd, Jake Inglis (Dunmanway) 3rd and Clay Cracknell (Dunmanway) 4th.
Kinneigh players dominated the U12 girls finishing with a top 4 sweep for the hosts Kinneigh with Sinead Hennessey, Amy Buttimer, Ashling O'Callaghan and Stephanie Hayes finishing in that order. The U12 Boys saw another title go the hosts as Darragh Foley beat Sean Hennessey in his second final of the day. Robin Smiles (Togher) and Eoin O'Neill(M.I.C.C) finished 3rd and 4th.
U12 and U14 Munster No.1 Sinead Hennessey added another title to her collection taking the U14 girls trophy from Julie McCarthy and nearly securing the U14 Mixed title but being narrowly defeated by David Shorten in the final. Julie McCarthy finished third with Darragh Foley 4th.
A number of players will be travelling to Cork next weekend for the Cork Closed. Watch this space for more details of the West Cork Table Tennis Christmas Party for Sunday 19th December.
TABLE TENNIS, TWO AT THE TOP
The West Cork table tennis community were celebrating as Emma Jane Helen from Rossmore reached her first ever Irish National Final at the STGA Ulster Junior Open on Saturday 20th and in doing, so swept aside the No.1 seed Amy Tobin from Dublin, in three straight sets in the semi final.
Emma Jane also beat the No.6 seed Fiona Dennett from England in a close 5 set quarter-final eventually winning 12/10, 6/11, 11/5, 8/11, 11/8.
The final saw Emma Jane up against fellow surprise finalist Ciara O’Donnell from Ballina, Co. Mayo. Emma Jane was very confident having not lost to Ciara previously. The first set however indicated that the match was going to be very tough with Emma Jane winning 13/11. The second set was as close with Emma Jane losing 10/12, unfortunately for the Munster supporters, Ciara went on to win the final two sets and the Ulster Junior Title (13/11, 10/12, 7/11, 9/11).
After returning from the long trip to Belfast Emma Jane was delighted with the result and described it as her most significant and enjoyable result in her 6 year playing career, even surpassing her Interprovincial Titles. She told her coach Owen Kelly that this was different to other events as it had to be an individual performance,
"This is my final season as a junior and I have had a National Final as my goal for a while now. Last season was frustrating as I reached the ¼ final of every National Tournament and lost to the same person each time. At the end o last year I won the Irish Top 12 tournament but that was a league and you don’t get the added pressure of a final."
"I was disappointed only reached the ¼ final of the first event of this season and I really needed this result for confidence and motivation. I will now have my sites set on the National Junior Championships in Dublin at the beginning of January. I would very much like to finish this season with a National title."
Owen Kelly, Emma Jane Helen’s coach described the result as "a major breakthrough. I have always felt it was just a matter of time. Emma Jane is one of the most consistent and talented players in the country, she has played for Munster an incredible 7 times, in every junior age group and has represented Ireland on a number of occasions from Primary Schools on up."
Emma Jane Helen will have every chance of full filling her dreams as she will start the Nationals as Irish No.2. and will play on home ground in the Munster Junior Open soon after. Emma Jane is a member of the Kinneigh Club and is sponsored by Celtic Table Tennis and supported by Skibbereen Sports Centre.
The Kinneigh Club had more than one finalist to celebrate as David Hayes (Bandon) reached the U17 boys final only to lose to Ulster’s local favourite Peter Graham in a very and exciting match (13/11, 9/11, 12/10, 9/11, 10/12). David still remains No.1 in Ireland due to his previous results.
Club mate Kieran McCarthy (Dunmanway) struggled to find form in Ulster but still hopes to make the Munster Interprovincial team this season and will be back in action at the Cork Closed early next month.
Schools out for Kinneigh players! by Kinneigh Coach Owen Kelly
Congratulations to all those in the club who took part in the Munster Schools Cup. A tremendous performance by all of you. Eight schools from West Cork travelled up to Cork for the championships and the results were very impressive. Alan and Jason pulled of a massive performance for Clonakilty Community College in the U19 Boys. Alan beat Killian Healy who used to train at the club and is currently Irish No.8. Jason set up the win by beating another ex-Kinneigh player Mike Spitere who is currently Irish No.11.
Not to be outdone Emma Jane lead the Clonakilty charge for Sacred Heart in the U19 Girls beating Kelby Duggan the joint Munster No.1 in a tough match against Ursulines. Freda Buttimer was the star in the final match as she beat Munster No.3 Katie McSweeney to clinch the Munster Schools title.
Coppeen were represented by our three Kinneigh U12s Michelle Hayes, Sinead Hennessey and Marie O'Sullivan and won the girls primary school title against tough opposition. Julie McCarthy won silver with the Dunmanway Community College, Kieran McCarthy played for the U19 team. The Hamilton High team included Eoin O'Callaghan & Gordon Forbes, with Chris Redmond, Andrea, Rebecca and David Shorten playing for Bandon Grammar. In fact everywhere you went there were Kinneigh players.
Three U19 titles, all three Mixed titles and the Primary Girls Schools Cup. Well done to all the players and the organisers a great day out for everyone.
Next stop the West Cork Schools Cup on Friday 13th February, spooky!
David in Denmark
David Hayes recently visited Denmark to play with the Irish Junior Development Squad at the Roskilde Open in Copenhagen. David excelled in winning the Band 3 Singles, reached the last 32 of the Junior Boys' Singles, and lost in the semi-final of the Junior Boys'
Excert from the Cippenham News Letter
Over the autumn half term week Cippenham TTC had the pleasure of hosting a group of four junior boys, two junior girls and their coach from Kinneigh TTC in the south west of Ireland. Links were established with this club when David and Catherine Hayes became members while visiting their Irish relations. The visit got off to an inauspicious start with a mix-up over flight bookings, which shortened their stay, but this proved to be the only setback. The players were hosted by various families within the Club who made them most welcome. They took part in an excellent training day, joint with Peniel Academy, led by our own Ken Phillips and enjoyed a relaxing evening of ten-pin bowling with many of the Club's junior and less junior players. Their visit concluded with a social evening, or should I say night, at the Dickens' household before being whisked off to Stansted airport at around 4am.
All in all it was voted a resounding success by everyone who took part and we are looking forward to the opportunity to pay a return visit in the not too distant future. Many thanks to the Dickens, Hansell, Linz and Tucker families and to Ken and Jan who all contributed in various different ways to the first of what we hope will be many future successful exchanges. Sue Hayes
Kinneigh 6 pass their 1 Star Awards
Congratulation to Marie O'Sullivan, Julie McCarthy, Sean Curtin, Michelle Hayes, Sinead Hennessey and Sean Hennessey from the Kinneigh U12 Development Squad who passed their ITTA 1 Star Awards. All the players attend the Wednesday night training sessions and have worked very hard this season. Under 9 Sean Hennessey is one of the youngest to have passed his award and they were presented by their coach Owen Kelly at the end of the 8th week. It is hoped that the rest of the U12 squad will also finish their 1 Star Awards this season and some may even be able to take their 2 Star at the end of the next 8 weeks.
Kinneigh travel to Cippenham

Members of Team Kinneigh travelled to Cippenham TTC in London as part of the Kinneigh International Exchange programme. Close links have been forged between the two clubs over the last year. David Hayes is a member of both clubs and has been able to benefit from his close association. Cippenham Coach Sue Hayes has visited the West Cork club on a number of occasions having close family links in near by Bandon.
It is hoped that further links between the two clubs will continue to be developed and Team Kinneigh looks forward to the time that it can host a visiting squad of Cippenham players. The initial visit was very short but the players were made very welcome and were able to train and compete in the excellent facilities of the English club and with a high standard of player. Most of all everyone had a lot of fun!
David Hayes heads for Denmark
David Hayes was again selected for the Irish Squad and will be travelling out to Roskilde in Denmark (30th Oct - 3rd Nov). This is the second time this season David has travelled with the Irish Team and hopes to emulate his successful British League results. Emma Jane Helen was the first Kinneigh player to make the trip last year.

Top 3 Finish for David Hayes
David Hayes from the Kinneigh Table Tennis Club finished third in the first Irish Ranking of the season at the I.W.A in Dublin. David who finished 11th in the first senior ranking followed this up with an excellent performance in the U17 event. David was beaten in the semi-final by the eventual winner Peter Graham from Ulster. Emma Jane Helen also from the Kinneigh Club and sponsored by TIBHAR International played well to finish 5th in the Junior Girls missing out on the semi-final loosing to Elizabeth Dennett (England) in the quarters. Emma Jane went on to win all her 5 to 8 play-off places to finish 5th. Andrea Shorten who is in her first year at Junior level, made up the Kinneigh elite trio and had some excellent results only narrowly loosing to ex-junior international Grainne McKenna (Leinster) and Munster Junior No.1 Kelby Duggan in the 5th sets.
Both David Hayes and Emma Jane Helen have been selected to play for Ireland in the Junior British Leagues over the weekend of the 18th-19th October. It is hoped that this will precede the international exchange between Kinneigh and Cippenham one of England's premier table tennis clubs.
Kinneigh TTC is a Munster Centre of Excellence and will be hosting a number of events over the season. The PINGIS Programme launched at the beginning of the season will have both competition and training sessions at the club. On Saturday 8th November Kinneigh will host a special training session and a presentation by Batskill UK a company specialising in adaptive table tennis coaching equipment. Representatives from a number of interested organisations will attend including the Irish Schools Table Tennis Assoc. Munster Special Olympics, CCLSP, ISC and representatives from a number of schools & clubs within the region. David Hayes in Top form
The first senior ranking of the season is the Senior Classification held over two days. In the mens event there are a number of groups between 6 and 8 players with two to qualify for the second round of two groups with the top two of them qualifying for the Sunday. David Hayes moved easily through his first round matches and into the second round where he topped his group with Ross Cullen. David continued his good form on the Sunday to record an eleventh place finish. Munster also welcomed the return of Brian Fitzgerald to winning ways as he took the top spot over Na Ning in the mens event. Kinneigh coach Owen Kelly finished 3rd in his first round group with Ross Cullen and Dave Pemberton going on to the later stages. Owen was then knocked out in the second round of the consolation.
Kinneigh players return from Brittany
The first ever Munster versus Brittany Table Tennis Challenge, christened "Celti-ping" by the Bretons was heralded as a tremendous success by all involved. The Youth Squad made up of 5 players and two coaches travelled to Brittany as guests of the Brittany League and the Goudelin Table Tennis Club. Goudelin have been involved with Team Kinneigh since 1999 and a number of club exchanges have taken place since then.
Kinneigh were well represented with top West Cork Juniors Emma Jane Helen and David Hayes representing Munster along with Kinneigh Club Chairman Ivan Shorten and club coach Owen Kelly travelling as non-playing captains. Gary Noonan (UCC), Louise Long & Kelby Duggan (Beech Hill TTC) made up the rest of the squad. The team was warmly welcomed and delighted by the extra-ordinary hospitality of the locals. A number of receptions including a visit to the Centre for Development and Public Services for the 15 members of the local community and a civic reception at the Goudelin Town Hall with the Mayor and officials from the French Federation and Brittany League welcoming the athletes to the challenge.
The match itself was part of a festival of sport and culture that included an exhibition of sports sculptures and photographs by local artists. Comptoire Irlandais a company specialising in Irish food had a display of a number of well known Irish products available to the public. The teams paraded through the town all accompanied by the Plouha Breton pipe band and were individually introduced to the good crowd and given a gift pack of local delicacies at the sports centre.
The standard of the Breton team was very high and they dominated most of the matches. David Hayes performed well above expectations and showed a remarkable display of attacking table tennis especially against U16 French Champion David Pardé. The match made up of long rallies with both players throwing their full weight behind fast and furious attacks to both wings with the other having to recover back from the table. The audience was on their feet on a number of occasions as the ability of the two players rose higher and higher during the 5 sets of the match. The Breton finally disposing of Hayes 11/8. Emma Jane also performed well but was only able to breach the French defensives on one occasion.
After the presentation of the hand carved Kito trophy to the victorious Breton side and a commemorative trophy to both Team Kinneigh and the Munster team the players were treated to a traditional Fez-Noz. These types of festivals are held all over Brittany during the summer months with a barbecue and a huge wooden dance floor. The music and dancing went on long into the night and early the next morning with young and old taking part and was a welcome experience for all the players. They then spent most of the rest of the days relaxing in the beautiful sunshine on one of the many sandy beaches.
The event begins the table tennis season in West Cork with the PINGIS starting in September. The series of eight sessions, held on the second Saturday of each month, starts in Dunmanway on the 13th September. Two training sessions are available (5Euro) 10.00-12.00hrs or 14.00hrs-16.00hrs (Tel: Vicky 026-49287). All ages all standards catered for with three qualified ITTA Coaches attending. This event will be followed by a ranking tournament at Team Kinneigh on Saturday 11th October. A number of West Cork Elite players will also be in action at the Thurles Ranking on 20-21st September.
Brittany Bound
Emma Jane Helen and David Hayes have been confirmed for the Munster Youth Squad to play the Brittany League at the end of August. The two youngsters will travel with Munster U21s Louise Long, Sandra Morris, Gary Noonan and Paul Twomey and will be the guests of the Goudelin Club while in France. The "Celti-ping Challenge" is the brain child of Kinneigh Club Coach Owen Kelly and Goudelin TTC Chairman Pierrot Quintin and comes after a number of exchanges between the Brittany club and West Cork clubs. The team flys out on 21st August till the 26th and a number of celtic cultural activities have also been organised for the squad. NPCs Owen Kelly and Ivan Shorten.
Irish Selections Emma Jane Helen and Andrea Shorten were selected for the Irish Schools Team to travel to the 6 Nations Schools International in Scotland. Coach Owen Kelly was also selected as coach for the U16 Girls Team that includeD Emma Jane Helen. Both girls have performed well this season and this was acknowledged with another Irish Cap for the both of them this season. Both girls reached the semi-finals of the Consolation events, while the U18 boys team took Gold for the first time in a number of years and the U18 Girls took bronze. David Hayes who is a member of the Kinneigh Club and has family connections in Bandon, represented England, as players are selected from the schools they are attending and David is in England at present. David reached the semi-final of the U16 boys event and had a good series of matches during the weekend. David and Emma Jane will be in action again as part of the Munster Youth Squad when they travel to Brittany in August.
Andrea was one of the recepients of the Bandon Opinion First Active Youth Awards.
IRISH JUNIOR RANKING - CORK APRIL 26-27th 2003.
Last Irish Ranking of the Season.
Emma Jane Helen had a good tournament beating Amy Tobin and Aileen O'Donnell to take fifth place after loosing 3-1 to Elizabeth Dennett in the ¼ finals. Emma Jane has had a good season at U15 and will finish 6th in Ireland. With only Amanda Mogey and Amy Tobin still eligible next year above her for next season, Emma Jane should be well pleased with her performance this year. Congrates on the pre's Emma and good luck in your Junior Cert.
Hurley slings his hook!
Alan Hurley only missed out on the third round on a count back in his group of four. With two qualifying and a good win over Stephen Keenan it looked likely that he would go through but just missed out on game/set ratio. Alan has had a good season gaining a second Munster cap as a junior, winning the West Cork Schools cup for the third time in a row, West Cork Junior of the Year 2002 and some tremendous performances in the Kinneigh Knights, helping them reach the semi-finals. Some of his best performances have been in team events but he finished the season on a high reaching the West Cork Open Final loosing out to David Buckley. As he drives off into the sunset in his off road turbo charged mean machine he can be well pleased that he was one of a select band of junior choppers and I suspect we will next season be hearing more of Alan who finished the season as Munster Senior No.3.
Shorten Sisters
Rebecca and Andy were up for the IJR over the weekend. Beccs had a narrow battle against Anna D'Arcy only loosing out at the very end. Beccs went through the first round and on up against Grainne McKenna and Sinead Kelly. She had chances against both and with Anna going onto finish 3rd and Grainne 4th you could say she didn't have the easiest of draws! Andy was ill for the U17s and turned up for the cadet to find her bat was broken! Now its got to happen to someone, just unfortunate that it was Andy in her last Cadet tournament. She borrowed mine, which was way too fast and made it through the opening two rounds without having to really play. Up against Claire Nelson she won the first comfortably enough but when it went into the fifth her touch just wasn't good enough and she moved into the 5-8 play-offs. Andy again had a close enough match with Fiona but lost out to her and played a poor game against Jenny O'Donnell who played well. This will probably move her down to 5th for the season and out of the top 3 for the first time in two years. Overall Andrea's season has shown some excellent form especially at the beginning of the season. She made the final of the first Irish Junior Ranking in Ulster and the semi final of the Liverpool GP and remains undefeated in Munster Rankings at U14 since 2001 and in her own age group since 2000. That has got to be a good season in anyone's books.
Kieran McCarthy travelled up and was unlucky to get Alan in his first round group. He went into the plate and finished 3rd loosing out to Aaron Kelleher in the semi-final.
A Summer Camp with Curt Carlsson from BTK Rekford and Kinneigh Coaches Owen Kelly and Ivan Shorten will take place during July. Check this space for further details.
Munster Caps 4 Kinneigh players were selected for the Munster Junior Interpros Team. Ruth Cocoran (U12), Andrea Shorten (U14), Emma Jane Helen (U17) and Alan Hurley (U17). Club Chairman Ivan Shorten Captains the U12 Boys Team. Kinneigh Chairman Ivan Shorten was selected as U12 Boys NPC.
Emma Jane Helen TIBHAR had an excellent Championship beating Sabrina Conway (Leinster) for the first time and helping the team take an unexpected Gold medal. The full team of Emma Jane Helen, Rachel O'Connor, Yvonne Hurley and Kelby Duggan managed to win without leading Munster Junior Anna D'Arcy who was unable to travel to Ulster. A further report will be posted when they return.
Munster Caps Kinneigh Secretary Ina Shorten was selected for the Munster Veterans Team. Kinneigh Coach and League player Owen Kelly was selected for the Senior Munster Team after finishing No.2 in Munster 2002-2003.
