13/11/2004 U21 County Semi-Final

Padraig Pearses 3-5 Four Roads 2-8

Padraig Pearses earned a hard fought draw in this entertaining U21 county semi-final against archrivals Four Roads in Athleague. It was Pearses who started the brightest and had early scores on the board through Michael Donoghue and Alan Sweeney before Four Roads got their first score. Pearses were playing some great hurling and the midfield of Michael Donoghue and Cathal Kelly (Moore) making it very difficult for the Four Roads team to get going. They capped their fine work midway through the first half when Shane Darcy smashed a rebound the net. However Four Roads responded admirably and with no shortage of good fortune, were brought back into the game when a long range free sailed all the way to the net to leave them just a point behind at the break. The second half was as fraught with action as the first and it was Four Roads who kept the momentum going to score their second goal just five minutes after the restart. Two more points saw them take a four-point lead before Pearses came to life again. After fielding a great ball Anthony Sweeney danced between several Four Roads defenders before kicking the ball to the net to bring Pearses back into the game. However, Four Roads added points and despite Alan Sweeney converting a free, still held the initiative with ten minutes to go. Pearses were nor finished yet however and Cathal Kelly landed the score of the game from the left touchline to give them some hope before David Sweeney shot found the net to put Pearses a point up in the dying minutes. Unfortunately for them they weren’t able to hang on to that lead. Four Roads levelled in injury time to bring it to a replay. Pearses showed fantastic heart in this game and despite being notably rusty in areas gave a huge performance. Their defence played some fantastic hurling particularly Cathal Kelly at full back. Midfield was immense at times and the forwards worked tirelessly on a day when clear-cut chances were hard to come by.

Team: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Cathal Kelly (Taughmaconnel), Shane Berrigan, Brendan Flynn, Alan Sweeney, John Mulvihill, Michael Donoghue, Cathal Kelly (Moore), Damien Whelan, Anthony Sweeney, Tomás Seale, David Sweeney, Shane Darcy, J.P Dolan. Subs: David Moran, Jonathon Ryan, Patrick Egan, Darren Ryan

  21/11/2004 U21 County Semi-Final Replay Padraig Pearses 1-5 Four Roads 1-18

Padraig Pearses U21 championship ambitions were put to the sword by Four Roads on Sunday in a disappointing replay in Athleague. Four Roads certainly upped their game from the previous Sunday but Pearses looked surprisingly flat from the outset. Pearses were a goal and three points behind before they even got the ball past the halfway line and could thank Alan Sweeney’s accuracy from frees late in the half for keeping them even remotely in the game. He buried a twenty-one yard free in the last second s of the half to give them some semblance of hope but they were 12 points behind at the break and never looked likely to recover. However they did up their performance in the second half and started it brightly but for every score they could muster Four Roads seemed capable of matching and despite having the ball in good positions on several occasions could not find the goal that might change the course of the game. The game petered out in a manner that was unbecoming of the drawn match a week earlier but Pearses could not argue with this result. Four Roads capitalised on persistent fouling by the Pearses backs and the midfield were unable to dominate like they had a week earlier. The forwards were starved of possesion for long periods but were unable to muster even a half decent chance from the ball that did come their way. They were beaten by the hungrier team on the day and it ends what has been a very disappointing year for Pearses hurling.

Team: Enda Colleran, Aidan Doorley, Cathal Kelly (Taughmaconnel), Shane Berrigan, Brendan Flynn, Alan Sweeney, John Mulvihill, Michael Donoghue, Cathal Kelly (Moore), Patrick Egan, David Moran, Tomás Seale, Shane Darcy, Anthony Sweeney, David Sweeney. Subs: J.P Dolan, Jonathon Ryan, Damien Whelan, Darren Ryan.

U21 Hurling Championship 23/10/2004

Padraig Pearses -15                                                               Roscommon Gaels-9

Padraig Pearses U21 Hurlers made it through to the semi-final of this years championship with a hard fought win over Roscommon Gaels in Hyde Park on Saturday evening. The Woodmount team started very slowly and took a few minutes to get to grips with the pace of the game and after Tomás Seale missed two early scoreable frees Gaels took the lead with a free. The game was notable from the start for persistent fouling by both teams but Pearses could have been in more serious trouble had Gaels been a little more reassured in front of goal. Instead they found themselves behind when first Alan Sweeney landed a free and Tomás Seale fired over from play. It was point for point for much of the first half but in the closing ten minutes Pearses began to open up. Well taken scores from John Paul Dolan and Damien Whelan sandwiched a brace of points from play from Seale and with Alan Sweeney proving the more profligate free taker Pearses went in at half time leading by eleven points to four. However Gaels were far from a beaten team and the came out strongly in the second half however they never looked capable of reeling in a Pearses team that seemed happy to simply see out the second half. However the exchanges were tough and some of the tackling tenacious and it wasn’t until Shane Darcy and David Moran popped over great scores with ten minutes to play that Pearses looked to have finally laid Gaels challenge to rest. Pearses had some solid performances around the pitch but their graft and determination, all over the pitch, was embodied in a wonderful midfield performance from Michael Donoghue. Pearses were far from spectacular in this game particularly in the second half. Four Roads are a step up in class but Pearses have plenty of ability to make it a game to look forward to.

Padraig Pearses Hurling Notes 25/10/2004

On Saturday 23rd October Pearses Hurlers participated in the St. Dominic’s U13 tournament held in Knockcrockery. Four teams involved: St. Dominic’s, Padraig Pearses, St. Kevin’s Castlerea, and Newtown Cashel in the inaugural year of this competition. Pearses played Dominic’s in the opening game. Very little separated the sides in a game that was full of passion and commitment and no little skill. Pearses held on to win narrowly. The win put Pearses in the final against St. Kevin’s Castlerea who also had a narrow win over a strong Newtown Cashel side. Pearses started strongly against St. Kevin’s and a great point by Shane Blackweir put the show on the road. Castlerea came back strongly and scored two fine goals. Pearses responded with a great goal from Michael Kenirons before half time. The second half was very exciting with fine passages of play from both sides. As the game came to a close it looked like Castlerea would hold out for a two point win until Tiege Cogavin sent in a long range free that went all the way to the net to give Pearses a one point victory in the do or die spirit that Pearses have. A great way to win a game but a terrible way to loose one. A delighted Alan Mannion, Pearses Captain, was presented with the Jimmy Murray Perpetual Cup by the legend himself. Newtown Cashel were presented with the Shield after a narrow victory over Dominic’s. Great credit to the St. Dominic’s club for organising what was a great day out for all the teams and mentors and running the tournament so well. Thanks to the two Joes and Ann and all who helped out. To the great Jimmy Murray for the beautiful cup which will hold pride of place in Pearses this year.

Panel: David Whelan, Ronan Kildea, Padraig Corbett, David Donlon, Evan Kelly, Tiege Cogavin, Andrew Phelan, Kevin Gavin, Alan Scott, Alan Mannion (Capt), Neill Sweeney, Shane Blackweir, Michael Kenirons, Shane O’ Rourke, Thomás Ryan, Kyle Feehily, Tiege Flynn, James Kelly, Shane Mulvey, David Murray.

Peter Donoghue Cup 18th September 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 2-10 Sarsfields: 1-7

The Downey’s Bar sponsored Padraig Pearses Junior Hurling team won the first annual Peter Donoghue Cup at Woodmount on Saturday 18th of September after a very entertaining game against Sarsfields of Galway. Pearses would not have been favourites going into the game but manager Dinny Cogavin was forced to call on some established senior stars to aid a very depleted panel that seems to be still celebrating its county final triumph three weeks ago.

In a game that was notable for plenty of timber and passion from both sides Pearses played some fine hurling and led at half time despite playing against the breeze. They were first on the scoreboard after fifty seconds when Tomas Seale jinked his way inside the Sarsfield’s defence to point. The same player was fouled a minute later but recovered to point the resultant free. Sarsfields started to come into the game and picked off a couple of opportunistic points to quell Pearses’ dominance. However Pearses’ forward line was working like a well-oiled machine and midway through the first half they levelled the game when Seale showed lovely stickwork to point after latching onto a loose ball. Alan Loughnane was having a royal battle with the Sarsfields centre forward and the quality of the ball out of defence could not be faulted. Cathal Kelly, following a delightful dummy, landed a huge point from the left touchline. Sarsfields levelled but in injury time an over-hit pass from Seale eventually found Robert Donoghue who pointed to give the initiative to the Woodmount team at the break.

The second half was hardly a minute old when Seale ghosted in to flick home the games first goal after Alan Sweeney’s shot was saved. Two minutes later Kelly came in a long the endline to smash home an unstoppable goal. At that stage it could have well become a rout but Pearses fell asleep and Sarsfields stormed back into the game and after getting two points they then scored a penalty to put just two between the sides. Pearses lost Tomás Seale through injury but it was then they really began to hurl. Alan Loughnane capped a fantastic performance when he charged forward to land Pearses’ first point of the second half. It was just the tonic they needed. Alan Sweeney came to life and scored two points in as many minutes before Cathal Kelly not for the first time landed a glorious long range point to give Pearses some breathing space. Sarsfields would score once more, a pointed free, but Alan Sweeney landed his third point in injury time to ensure a deserved Pearses’ victory.

Man of the match could have been any number of players but Alan Loughnane and Christy Sweeney gave outstanding performances. Sweeney’s roving role was a major problem for the Galway team and his miraculous goal line clearance with five minutes to go was a major talking point after the game. Kieran Sweeney was solid in goal and was well aided by a tenacious full back line. Sarsfields never got to grips with a forward line that seemed to know where the ball would drop every time and a tally of 2-9 of 2-10 from play tells its own story. Congratulations to Dinny Cogavin, Joey Fallon, Tom Donoghue and Christy Sweeney who masterminded the capture of another trophy for 2004.

Team: Kieran Sweeney, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue, Shane Berrigan, Kevin Flynn, Alan Loughnane, David Loughnane, Michael Donoghue, John Mulvihill, Cathal Kelly, Alan Sweeney, Ollie Dolan, Tomás Seale, Robert Donoghue, Christy Sweeney. Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final 5th September 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 2-11       Four Roads: 3-11

The fact that this semi-final was one of the best games seen in Athleague for many a long summer will be scant consolation to a Pearses side that was left bewildered by yet another failure at the knockout stages of the championship. When exactly their luck will turn is unknown but after a fantastic effort they once more fell just short to a vibrant Four Roads side. The game had everything and the referee must take credit for letting the play flow at a rip roaring pace. Pearses started at a superb pace and had the first point on the board when Dara Mulvey latched on to a low ball and fired over a cracking point from thirty yards. Four Roads levelled inside a minute and did the same again after Ollie Dolan had put Pearses back in front. Pearses then went into a two-point lead through a Shane Sweeney free and a fine point from Teddy Galvin but Four Roads were not shaken to easily and levelled the game again. Another point from Galvin was again cancelled out before Four Roads suddenly opened up. They capitalised on a lack of concentration in the Pearses backs and in the space of four minutes scored two goals and a point that had Pearses on the rack. However the Woodmount team responded admirably and were thrown a lifeline in injury time when Shane Sweeney was fouled and Dara Mulvey hammered home an unstoppable penalty. Buoyed by their change in fortunes Pearses started the second half at a frantic pace. First Tomás Seale latched on to a loose ball to fire over before Shane Sweeney added another. Four Roads replied with a point but then the game was well and truly put in the melting pot when Pearses goaled for a second time. A long Sweeney free was touched on in a forest of hurleys and after taking a wicked bounce off the turf found its way to the back of the net. Seale set up Galvin in the 40th minute for a wonderful point before Galvin struck again from the tightest of angles to give Pearses a two-point lead. Four Roads responded brilliantly and their third goal put them back in front but once again Pearses levelled through Dara Mulvey. The teams swapped points again but it was Four Roads who were to finish the stronger. A misdirected pass from Seale saw the ball, come all the way, back down the field where Four Roads won and pointed a free. It was the turning point. They added two more points in injury time and Pearses just did not have anything else to give as another county semi-final slipped from their grasp. Pearses gave a marvellous team performance and recovered admirably despite losing Niall Cunningham through injury in the first half. Alan Sweeney gave a fine display at fullback, as did Martin Mulvey after his introduction. Robert Donoghue and Alan Loughnane had fantastic second halves. The midfield worked tirelessly as did the half forward line. Teddy Galvin gave an exhibition of point scoring at corner forward and Dara Mulvey also impressed. It wasn’t for a lack of commitment or heart that Pearses suffered this defeat. They played with tremendous spirit and played their best hurling of the year to date but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. The panel and the management deserve great credit considering that many people saw the year as a lost cause in mid-June. The panel were dejected group as they gathered on the pitch afterwards for a few moments but there can only be good fortune ahead for a team of such talent and spirit.

Junior Hurling Final 29th August 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 3-8      Athleague/Tremane –12

Despite a gallant performance by Athleague/Tremane it never looked likely that they could overcome a Pearses side that played with a supreme confidence and was hugely motivated in their quest for a third Junior title in a row. Yet again it was Pearses sharpness in front of goal that was the difference and one could not but admire the fact that all Pearses’ scores came from play. The game started at a frenetic pace. Athleague/Tremane had the first point on the board after fifty seconds but nearly straight from the resumption a long clearance came all the way through to Tomás Seale and the full forward booted the ball past the goalkeeper for the games first goal. Despite playing into the wind the next seven minutes saw Pearses bombard the opposition’s goal with high and low ball and only for some great defending, Pearses could have had two more goals. David Sweeney scored a lovely point from a tight angle before Christy Sweeney reacted quickly to hammer home the second goal that Pearses certainly deserved in the seventh minute. However that was as good as it got for the Woodmount club in the first half. Athleague/Tremane replied with two points before Tomás Seale tapped over what would be Pearses’ last score of the first half in the thirteenth minute. Athleague/Tremane then hit seven points with out reply to find themselves two points up at the break. Pearses started the second half as they did the first and hit four points in quick succession. Ollie Dolan vindicated his introduction by flicking over seconds after the restart, Anthony Sweeney landed another following a marvellous catch, before Christy Sweeney and Seale both fired over points to put Pearses two in front again. Athleague/Tremane responded with a point but Dolan and Padraig Dooley kept the momentum going for Pearses with two more points. Despite Atleague/Tremane desperately pressing for a goal it arrived at the other end when a Seale free dropped to David Sweeney who buried Pearses’ third goal and put the result beyond any doubt with a minute to go. Athleague/Tremane got the last score in injury time but Pearses’ Captain Sean Donoghue had his hands firmly on the cup at that stage. Many believe that this is one of the finest Junior teams to have emerged and with three titles secured in a row it is a hard argument to disagree with. Despite the wonderful talent possessed by the side they had an amazing desire to succeed which on the day counted much towards the success. It was a wonderful team performance but with some notable individual performances from Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn, and Cathal Kelly. Michael Donoghue played a fantastic game at midfield and was well aided by Anthony Sweeney. The forwards strike rate speaks for itself and John Mulvihill and David Sweeney impressed but Christy Sweeney’s performance throughout saw him a well deserving man of the match on the day. This victory can only do good and is a timely boost for the seniors ahead of their county semi-final.

Team: Kenneth Glynn, Aidan Doorley, Sean Donoghue(C), Niall Flynn, Cathal Kelly, Kevin Flynn, David Loughnane, Michael Donoghue, Anthony Sweeney, John Mulvihill, Kieran Sweeney, Christy Sweeney, Padraig Dooley, Tomás Seale, David Sweeney. Subs: Ollie Dolan (half Time), Alan Glynn (55 mins), Michael Hogarty, Cathal Kelly, John Paul Dolan, Aidan Sweeney

This was a much closer game than the score line reflects, with just 2 points between the teams mid way through the second half.

Kevin Flynn had a brilliant game at centerfield for Pearses and was well supported by Dermott Hardiman.  In defence Michael Galvin played well as did Johnathan and Aidan Ryan.

Bernard Butler made some great runs before retiring with a shoulder injury and his replacement Paul Hogan also played very well.

Up front the Murray brothers Colin and Niall did well for Pearses as did Ollie Brooks and Darren Donnellan but Eddie Egan who scored four top class points from play.

Team:

Brian Croffey, Shane Donnellan, Michael Galvin, Damian Blackweir, Johnathan Ryan, Aidan Ryan, Bernard Butler, Dermott Hardiman, Kevin Flynn, Ollie Brooks, Thomas Carty, Eddie Egan, Niall Murray, Collin Murray and Darren Donnellan.

Junior Hurling Final Preview

Padraig Pearses will meet Athleague/Tremane in this years Junior County Hurling Final on Sunday 29th August at 2pm in Athleague. Pearses are aiming to land their third title in a row after defeating St. Dominics and Four Roads in the last two finals. Their defence of their title this year got off to a flying start against Four Roads in Woodmount where they battled out a three point victory on one of the wettest days of the year. They were well beaten by a fired up St. Dominics two weeks later to dent their three in a row aspirations. However they recovered well and on another wet afternoon in Athleague they defeated Athleague/Tremane to book their place in the final and other results ensured that it was these two teams that would meet in the final again. The game will be a very tense affair and Pearses do have a number of injury worries approaching the game. Athleague/Tremane will certainly be seeking revenge for their earlier defeat but will also be hoping to end Pearses’ hold on this particular title. A great days drama is in store and Pearses will be hoping for good support on the day. Best of luck to the management and panel.

Under 16 Ladies Championships

 Padraig Pearses 3-13                                                                           Castlerea 6-4

On an overcast evening Padraig Pearses U-16's took on a strong Castlerea side in
Woodmount. This highly entertaining game was a close encounter with a high
standard of football played by both teams. Padraig Pearses got off to an excellent start
and applied great pressure on the Castlerea defence. However they failed to convert
the early possession. Captain Darina Flynn delivered in some outstanding ball early
on. The half forward line of Sarah Dolan, Gillian Hannon and Amy Finnerty proved a
constant threat with some strong running at the Castlerea defence. Great work
between Darina Flynn and Louise Egan at midfield created an opportunity for
Deirdre Corbett which she converted with ease for one of Pearses many well-worked
scores. Elaine Egan's great work ethic in the comer forward line also helped to add to
the Pearses tally. The emergence of Helen Kenny and Deirdre Sweeney prior to half
time made a noticeable difference and deservedly so Pearses went in 3pts ahead at
half time. The defence of Elizabeth Daly, Katie Moran, Linda Sweeney, Amy Duffy,
Emma Ryan and Christina Dolan were excellent throughout the game. Particularly
Katie Moran demonstrated some great fielding of the ball and Christina Dolan
distributed great ball from the halfback line. Pearses changed their level further with
some excellent link up play between the two Sweeney sisters Deirdre and Olivia who
both took some great scores. The substitution of Lisa Mannion and Sinead Raftery
proved decisive, as their set up plays was excellent. Great goal keeping from Linda
O'Brien made sure Pearses stayed in the game. In the end Pearses were extremely
unlucky to draw. However on a positive note the future looks bright for this under 16
team.

Team:

Linda O'Brien, Elizabeth Daly, Katie Moran, Linda Sweeney, Amy Duffy,
Emma Ryan, Christina Dolan, Darina Flynn, Louise Egan (2-1), Sarah Dolan, Gillian
Hannon, Amy Finnerty, Elaine Egan, Deirdre Corbett (0-1), Olivia Sweeney (0-2).

Subs Used:

Helen Kenny fO-1). Deirdre Sweeney (1-7} Lisa Mannion. Sinead Raftery.

Senior Football Championships

Padraig Pearses 0-9                            St Bridgets 1-11

The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football Team lost their opening Championship game to St Bridgets in Ballyforan on Saturday evening last.

The first half was keenly contested with both teams exchanging points but a Bridget’s goal on the stroke of half time gave them a four-point interval lead.  Indeed the lead could have been greater was it not for a brilliant save from Pearses goalkeeper David Moran.  Bridgets started the second half well and unanswered points virtually ended the game as a contest.  In fairness Pearses never stopped trying and the introduction of the injured Paul Moran and Padraic Kelly helped put some bite in a lack lustre attack, but it wasn’t enough and Bridgets ran out comfortably winners in the end.

 Team:

David Moran, Padraig Kelly, Damian Donnellan, Denis Whyte, Gerry Kelly, Declan Duffy, Aidan Fallon, Niall Finneran, Shane Sweeney, Patrick Connell, Vinnie Costello, Paul Duke, Enda Barrett, Michael Duignan, Sean Fahy,

Subs Used:

Junior A Football Championship

Padraig Pearses 0-10                              Creggs 1-11

The “An Tain Bar” sponsored Pearses Junior A Footballers lost out narrowly to Creggs in an exciting game played in Padriac an Phairsaigh on Sunday last. Pearses trailed by a point at half time despite playing with a strong wind in the first half.  They upped their game considerably in the second half, with Aidan Ryan, Ollie Brooks and Niall Murray, all played very well. There was just a point between the Teams with 5 minutes to go but it was Creggs the got the all-important goal to secure victory.

Team:

Brian Croffey, Eddie Egan, Michael Galvin, Shane Donnellan, Johnathan Ryan, Aidan Ryan, Bernard Butler, Kevin Flynn, Dermott Hardiman, Ollie Brooks, Thomas Carty, Niall Hogan, Niall Murray, Colin Murray, Darren Donnellan.

Senior Hurling Championship 17th July 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 3-13  Oran –9

Pearses continued their recovery from earlier setbacks in the Senior Hurling championship with another win against last year’s county finalists Oran in a manner that suggests they are finally settling into the pace of the championship. Pearses are playing an entertaining brand of hurling and their work rate is improving all the time and Oran found it impossible to deal with the movement of the Pearses attack where Shane Sweeney was in super form. Pearses were slow to start but once they settled they played some lovely hurling. They yielded three early points to Oran and despite Sweeney scoring a cracking goal midway through the first half they failed to put Oran away considering the were playing with a stiff breeze. They started in the right tone with Brian Burns scoring a marvellous point from the right wing. Despite Oran recovering from this Pearses looked well capable of upsetting them and it was Sweeney from frees and play that proved the biggest problem for the Oran backs. The discipline of the Pearses backs was also a vital factor in the win. Pearses showed the importance of a strong panel in the game and the introduction of Anthony Sweeney proved the deciding factor in the game. Sweeney came on and scored two classic goals out of nothing when the game was still up for grabs. While Sweeney was scoring them at one end Robert Donoghue was ensuring that Oran were not going to spoil the party with two huge catches from under the crossbar as Oran searched for a way back into the game. Leo Flynn was once again in superb form at corner back while both wingbacks Alan Loughnane and Niall Cunningham played marvellous hurling. Pat Downey has settled well into his midfield role and Christy Sweeney continues to be a huge scoring threat from the middle of the field. Ollie Dolan was as effective as ever at centre forward while Shane Sweeney was in sparkling form in the inside line. Pearses have certainly upped the tempo in the championship and join Athleague at the head of the table but it is still far to early to call what has been an incredibly tight championship so far with six teams still in with a shout of a semi-final spot.

Pearses Team: Kenneth Glynn, Keiran Doyle, Alan Sweeney, Leo Flynn, Niall Cunningham, Robert Donoghue, Alan Loughnane, Pat Downey, Christy Sweeney, Brian Burns, Ollie Dolan, Michael Donoghue, Padraic Galvin, Shane Sweeney, Cathal Kelly. Subs Used: Tomás Seale, Anthony Sweeney

Junior Hurling Championship 14th July 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 3-13 Athleague/Tremane 1-9

Padraig Pearses got their bid for a third junior title in a row back on track against Athleague/Tremane on Wednesday 14th July with a fine win. Pearses were slow to start and Athleague/Tremane were three points up early on before Aidan Sweeney got Pearses first score from play. They eventually started to get to grips with the pace of the game but also the wet conditions and it resulted in a glut of scores in the ten minutes before half time. First Anthony Sweeney pointed from long range, Aidan Sweeney landed another great score from play before Tomás Seale pointed from a free and play. Athleague/Tremane responded with a point but right on half time Anthony Sweeney whipped the ball to the net for the first goal of the game to leave Pearses four points clear at the break. They began the second half as they ended the first with some fine scores. Cathal Kelly immediately made an impact after being moved up to wing forward from corner back by landing two points in a minute. Pearses control on the game was further shown when Aidan Sweeney hammered home goal number two, midway through the half. Despite Athleague finding the net as well, Sweeney’s goal sparked the rest of the Pearses forwards into life. Tomás Seale landed two points from play and Alan Glynn and John Mulvihill caused plenty of problems with numerous surging runs at the Athleague/Tremane defence. Cathal Kelly landed another huge point from the middle of the park before Aidan Sweeny scored his second and Pearses third goal of the game with a marvellous flick with five minutes to go. Padraig Dooley scored two points in injury time to leave the result beyond doubt. Pearses can thank a major improvement in their shooting for this win but also a great desire to win. Sean Donoghue and Niall Flynn were solid in the full back line but David Loughnane at wingback was the player of the second half with a great display. Anthony Sweeney who scored 1-1 from midfield was another of the fine performances. Aidan Sweeney had a field day at corner forward and finished with a personal tally of 2-2. Kieran Sweeney once again proved an able leader of the attack while John Mulvihill and Padraig Dooley both made a vital contribution after their introductions.

Team: Kenneth Glynn, Cathal Kelly (Taughmaconnell), Sean Donoghue, Niall Flynn, Shane Berrigan, Aidan Doorley, David Loughnane, Anthony Sweeney, Michael Donoghue, Alan Glynn, Keiran Sweeney, David Sweeney, Aidan Sweeney, Tomás Seale, Cathal Kelly (Moore). Subs Used: John Mulvihill, Ollie Dolan, Padraig Dooley, Kevin Flynn

Padraig Pearses Minor Footballers defeated Elphin by one point in Elphin on Friday evening last.

Adrian Burns was in top form in defence for Pearses while the centerfield pairing of Aidan Ryan and Ian Duffy also played well.

Up front Cathal Kelly & Aidan Sweeney were best.

Team:

Alan Duffy, Shane Berrigan, Adrian Burns, Brendan Kelly, Cathal Sweeney, Cathal Kelly, Keelan Daly, Ian Duffy, Aidan Ryan, Niall Murray, Cathal Kelly, Stephen Landy, Conor Dolphin, Aidan Sweeney, Alan Naughton.

Minor Football League

 Padraig Pearses 2-10                                                                           St Aidan’s 0-4

Pearses Minor Footballers had a good win over St Aidan’s in Padraic an Phairsaigh on Tuesday last.  An early Aidan Sweeney goal set up Pearses who went on the lead by 1-8 to 0-2 at half time.  Cathal Kelly & Robbie Brooks excelled in this half.  Aidan’s rallied with the breeze into the second half but Adrian Burns was in great form at Full Back and was well supported by Brendan Kelly and Alan Naughton.

 Team:

Alan Duffy, Brendan Kelly, Adrian Burns, Shane Berrigan, Keelan Daly, Cathal Kelly, Alan Naughton, Cathal Kelly, Aidan Ryan, Michael Murray, Robbie Brooks, Stephen Landy, Conor Dolphin, Aidan Sweeney and Emmett Kelly.

Junior Hurling Championship 6th July 2004:

Padraig Pearses: -10                                                  St. Dominic’s 1-11

Pearses lost ground in their bid to retain their Junior County Hurling title when they were beaten by a confident St. Dominic’s outfit at Knockrockery on Tuesday 6th July. This was an entertaining game of hurling with a lot of young players getting an opportunity to display their talents. Both teams could have won the game but it was Dominic’s who were more economical in front of goal from frees and play. Dominic’s were first on the scoreboard but Pearses responded with a point from Alan Glynn before Tomás Seale tapped over a free to edge Pearses in front. The teams swapped points before Dominic’s struck for a goal midway through the first half. Pearses might have had a goal themselves but Tomás Seale’s shot hit the crossbar before going over the bar. Cathal Kelly then brought them to within a point with a fine score from a sixty-five. Pearses rallied well in the closing stages of the half and Padraig Dooley leveled the game before a super effort from the wing from Alan Glynn put them back in front before half time. The second half started in much the same vein as the first, with frees being awarded on a regular basis. Seale tapped over two for Pearses but Dominic’s were gaining in confidence as the game progressed and a succession of silly frees saw Dominic’s move in front and they never looked back. In the last ten minutes Pearses were guilty of some bad misses and as the game closed out Dominic’s tagged on three points without reply to ensure the victory. The game had some good patches of hurling from both teams. Pearses never seemed to hurl with the same zeal as they did against Four Roads and can blame some poor finishing as well as a share of bad luck for the defeat. The championship is only in its early stages but Pearses will need to up the performance level again in a competition where the top two teams play the county final.

Team:

Kenneth Glynn, Shane Berrigan, Sean Donoghue, Faolain Sweeney, Cathal Kelly, Aidan Doorley, David Loughnane, Michael Donoghue, Christy Sweeney, David Sweeney, Kieran Sweeney, Anthony Sweeney, Micháel Hogarty, Alan Glynn, Tomás Seale. Subs Used: Padraig Dooley, Niall Flynn, Aidan Sweeney

Junior Hurling Championship 22nd June 2004:

Padraig Pearses: 1-8  Four Roads: -8

Pearses got the defence of their Junior Championship off to a flying start at rain soaked Woodmount on Tuesday 22nd June by defeating arch rivals Four Roads in a toughly fought match. Pearses will take great heart from this victory having lost to the same opposition in the Senior championship three days earlier. Despite the atrocious hurling conditions the two teams provided the crowd with plenty of action in a game that was notable for fantastic commitment from both sides. Four Roads aided by a strong wind started the better with a point from a free but Tomás Seale levelled with a free minutes later. Four Roads just kept in front but Pearses kept in touch with a Tomás Seale free and a fantastic individual score by Christy Sweeney who ran at the heart of the Four Roads defence from centre field before kicking a point to leave Four Roads a point up at half time. The second half had a similar tone but Pearses inspired by some solid defending by Shane Berrigan and Sean Donoghue edged in front with a fine Aidan Sweeney point and two frees from Seale. With the game in the melting pot Four Roads were dealt a sucker punch when a free from Seale dropped short and Padraig Dooley capitalised on a mistake by the goalkeeper to scramble the ball over the line. Four Roads rallied with a couple of points but Pearses steadied the ship and late scores from Alan Glynn and a cracking point from wing back David Loughnane saw them safely over the finishing line much to the delight of the home crowd. Pearses stuck to their task doggedly all through the match and the spine of the defence Sean Donoghue and Aidan Doorley were inspirational. David Sweeney worked tirelessly all evening at midfield and the forwards spearheaded by Kieran Sweeney and Padraig Dooley played powerfully in spite of the near monsoon conditions.

Senior Hurling Championship 19th June 2004:

Padraig Pearses: -10                                                              Four Roads: -16

Padraig Pearses Senior Hurlers slumped to their second defeat of this year’s championship and it was archrivals Four Roads who travelled to Woodmount and came away with the points.

Both teams desperately needed the points after suffering crushing defeats in the last round. Pearses were short key players Dara Mulvey, Gary Frehill and captain Niall Cunningham but Four Roads did not have a full deck to choose from either. Pearses started brightly backed by a strong wind and were reaping the rewards of playing quick low ball into the full forward line where Padraic Galvin was causing problems for the Four Roads defence. Galvin won several frees in the match and also scored two points from play and was by far Pearses most dangerous player. However as the half progressed the Pearses game plan began to become disjointed and Four Roads were making little of the strong breeze. The edged in front mid way through the first half and Pearses didn’t seem capable of holding them especially against the breeze in the second half. However Pearses started the second half much the livelier again and levelled the game through Padraic Galvin five minutes into the half. However that was a good as it got as Four Roads turned the screw with points from frees and play. Pearses had several switches but the couldn’t get to grips with the game and Four Roads ran out six point winners.

The match itself was an exciting affair with some fine patches of hurling but it was also littered with frees which Four Roads capitalised on more than Pearses. Pearses had some good performances around the field but never really hurled as cleverly as Four Roads. Pearses are in serious danger of not making the semi-finals for the first time in a long time but there is no doubt that this team has all the capabilities to make a serious impression in this championship yet.

Padraig Pearses 3-8                                                                                Eire Og 0-11

Pearses Under 14 footballers continued their good league run with a win over Eire Og in Padraic Na Phairsaigh on Thursday evening last. Pearses played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half and led by 1 – 5 to 0 – 2 at half time with Jason Clogher in top form up front for the home team. Pearses defended well in the second half under extreme pressure from Eire Og and the turning point of the game came when Jason mirror finished off a good move to the back of the net for Pearses 2nd goal. For Pearses Kieran O’ Shea played well in goal and had some very good kickouts.  Conor Downey and Donal O’ Malley continue to improve in defence. Cathal Dolphin and Shane Dolan were as reliable as ever as were Michael Power and Shane Mulvey.

Alan Naughton and Alan Mannion worked hard at centerfield while up front Jason Clogher, Sean Ryan and Niall Daly played well as did the improving Jason Murray, David Cullen, Mark Fallon, Eoin Clogher and Colum Egan.

Camogie Notes

Padraig Pearses had a fantastic win in the U-14B final on Saturday 29th May against a fancied St Dominic’s team played in Tisara Community Park, Four Roads.

A number of very heavy showers just before the start did nothing to dampen the spirits of both teams who served up a great contest.  Pearses playing with the slight breeze in the first half enjoyed the lions share of possession but failed to capitalise on this and went in at half time all square.

The second half was more open with some fine passages of play.  St Dominic’s broke the deadlock halfway through the second half with a pointed free by Caoilfhionn Cox.

Pearses were rocked but refused to surrender and come close on a number of occasions.

With five minutes to go Pearses after great pressure won a 30 metre free, Christine Dolan sent in a low ball, which was met by Sarah Glynn who crashed the slither to the net.  Our supporters went wild.  St Dominic’s tried gamely to salvage the game but some heroic defending by Pearses won the day.

Triona Waters had a sound game in goal.  Full back line of Ciara Egan, Emma Ryan and Lisa Hannon were solid all through and gave no ground to their opponents.  Erika Connolly, Christina Dolan and Elizabeth Daly were totally dominant and broke St Dominic’s hearts time and again.  Louise Egan (Captain) and Aoife Mc Donnell who deservedly got player of the match were excellent all through displaying all the skills and class.

Sandra Naughton, Linda Sweeney and Siobhan Scott played with fire and determination and supplied great ball to inside forewords.  Sarah Glynn, Gemma Kelly and Gina Goldrick.  These girls had their moments and Sarah Glynn had her golden moment, which secured a great victory for Pearses.

Karen Naughton who came on as a sub played really well and put in a gutsy performance.

Panel:  Triona Waters Ciara Egan, Emma Ryan, Lisa Hannon, Erika Connolly, Christine Dolan, Elizabeth Daly, Louise Egan, Aoife Mc Donnell, Sandra Naughton, Linda Sweeney, Siobhan Scott, Sarah Glynn, Gemma Kelly, Gina Goldrick, Karen Naughton, Katie Greet, Laura Barrett, Alisha Carroll, Paula Kelly, Rebecca Holland and Oliva Sweeney.

Well-done girls! Many thanks to all our parents supporters young and old who made the day a memorable one – those who organised the bonfires to Padraig Pearses Club who provided a beautiful meal and refreshments especially Mary & Donnie. To Kevin Flynn who travelled through every nook and cranny in the Club area exhausting his “hooter” along the way.  Thanks to all the girls U16’s & U19’s who helped greatly along the way.  Well done to Patty & Belinda for taking this team to success this year.  Thanks to each and every girl for their commitment and dedication.

Connaught Senior Football League – Semi Final

Padraig Pearses 0-10                                                               Curry (Sligo) 1-10

The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football Team lost out narrowly to Sligo Champions Curry in Castlerea on Tuesday evening last.

Curry started well and led by four points at half time and although Pearses reduced the deficit to just one point in the second half they could not just peg back the Curry lead.

Paul Moran was inspirational for Pearses all through the game and Niall Finneran tried hard at centerfield while in defence Padraig Kelly bounced back to top form and was well supported by Denis Whyte and Michael Galvin.

Thomas Dolan continues to impress in goal for Pearses.

Team:

Thomas Dolan, Padraig Kelly, Michael Galvin, Denis Whyte, Gerry Kelly, Paul Kelly, Declan Duffy, Niall Finneran, Vinnie Costello, Pat Connell, Paul Duke, Michael Duignan, Robert Brooks, Paul Moran, Emmett Egan.

 Subs Used:

David Moran, Ollie Brooks.

Under 14 Football League

Padraig Pearses 0-9                                                                 Clann na Gael 3-6

An under strength Pearses Under 14 Football Team were well beaten by Clann na Gael in Johnstown on Sunday last.

The game was level with just 10 minutes remaining but an under strength Pearses team couldn’t hold out and Clann ran out comfortable winners in the end.

For Pearses Shane Mulvey, Shane Dolan, Cathal Dolphin and Michael Power were best in defence.  Alan Naughton and Jason Clogher were in top form at centerfield.

While up front David Cullen, Sean Ryan and Arran Feehily were best.

Hurling Notes 24th May 2004

U14  Feile  Hurling  Semi Final:

Padraig Pearses played Four Roads in the semi final of the Feile Competition on Tuesday evening in Athleague. Playing with the breeze in the first half, Pearses had the better of the exchanges and led at half time by 2-4 to 1-1. The second half was a tight affair with some good patches of hurling but a few defensive errors saw Four Roads get two rather soft goals which brought them back into the game and boosted by this they finished the game the stronger to book their place in the final. Great credit is due to the Pearses lads for a great effort and to Brian Kelly who brought the team on in leaps and bounds since they got together at the start of the year.

The Panel: Mark Whelan, Aaron Feehily, Alan Naughton(Capt), Conor Downey, Taigh Cogavin, Michael Power, Michael Kenirons, Jason Clogher, Sean Ryan, Niall Tumulty, Niall Daly, Stephen Curley, Shane Mulvey, Tomás Sweeney, Keiran O’ Shea, Enda McGrath, Ian O’ Brien, James Kelly, Enda Kelly, Ethan Bruce, Tomas Kelly, Thomas Donoghue and Darren Kenny.

Connacht U12 Ground Hurling Blitz

The Connacht U12 Groung Hurling Blitz was held in Padraig Pearses Grounds on Saturday 22nd of May. Ten teams from Roscommon, Mayo and Galway took part in this competition that got underway at 12:30 and was again a marvellous success. Great credit is due to the Pearses Grounds Committee especially to Michael Grenham and Tommy Ryan for marking the four pitches and cutting the grass to the necessary high standards required for ground hurling. Also thanks is due to the catering committee of Vera Ryan, Joan Ryan, Ann-Marie Moran and Donie Egan for providing food and refreshments for all the teams and mentors involved and to anyone who was of assistance during the day. Particular, thanks is due to Padraig Dooley who worked tirelessly before and during the tournament to ensure that it was a success.

The Pearses U12 team played some fantastic hurling throughout the tournament and deserve great credit for their commitment. We reached the A Final against our neighbours and friends Four Roads. The final itself was a great contest with Pearses narrowly losing on a scoreline of 2:0 to 0:2. Many thanks to Teresa Fitzgibbon and Joe Darcy who were part of the management team and well done to all the lads involved.

The Panel: Cian O’ Murchada Flynn, Thomas Ryan, David Murray, Kyle Feehily, Conor Daly, Conor Fitzgibbon, Darren Green, David Whelan, Shane O’ Rourke, Darragh Flynn, David Donlon, Michael Kenirons, Kevin Gavin, Evan Kelly, Taigh Cogavin, Padraig Corbett, Andrew Phelan, Alan Scott.

Pearses Camogie Notes

Pearses played Oran in the last round of the U14 Feile Competition on Friday evening in Rockfield. The game was a cracker from start to finish. Pearses got off the a great start with a fine point by Christine Dolan from a free but responded with a point and ten minutes later got a good goal. Pearses got back on level terms shortly afterwards with a great goal by Rebecca Holland. The second half was full of Passion and fire and all that separated the teams was a fine pointed free by Laura Concar that left the final score 1:2 to 1:1. The Pearses girls can be really proud of their performance and have come a long way in a short time. They will now contest the B Final against St. Dominics. Well, done girls and many thanks to the management team of Belinda Dooley, Patty Ward and Padraig Dooley.

Panel: Trione Waters, Erika Connolly, Emma Ryan, Lisa Hannon, Sara Glynn, Christina Dolan, Elizabeth Daly, Louise Egan, Linda Sweeney, Olivia Sweeney, Aoife McDonnell, Siobhán Scott, Sandra Naughton, Gina Goldrick, Rebecca Holland, Orla Berrigan, Breda Carty, Laura Barrett, Sarah Kelly, Mary Murray, Alise Carroll, Karen Naughton, Gemma Kelly and Tootsie Cogavin.

Senior Hurling Championship 30th June 2004: Padraig Pearses: 2-5  Tremane: 1-12

Despite a satisfying if sluggish two point first round win against Roscommon Gaels three weeks previous Pearses Senior hurlers found themselves on the receiving end of one the biggest shocks in the Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship in recent years as they were beaten by Tremane. On a day when everything seemed to go pear-shaped for the Pearses men, they began the day without Shane Sweeney and Teddy Galvin and lost Niall Cunningham after twenty minutes through injury. Pearses fell behind as a result of two early frees and this set the trend of what was a very scrappy affair. Cathal Kelly, who worked hard all day, got Pearses’ first point after being set up by Gary Frehill in the sixth minute. Tremane scored two more frees before Tomás Seale landed a point. Pearses should have been farther behind at the break but Seale scrambled the ball over the line for a goal in first-half injury time. Most of the crowd at Athleague expected a more sustained and fluent Pearses performance in the second half but they were disappointed as the second half petered out in a similar manner to the first.  Pearses fell further behind as Tremane scored 1-2 in the early stages of the second half. They were given a lifeline on 54 minutes when Darragh Mulvey came up from his position as goalkeeper to hammer home a twenty-five metre free. Mulvey then moved out field in a direct switch with Christy Sweeney but it was too little too late as Tremane fired over another free to steady the ship and take the victory they deserved. Tremane were hungrier, worked harder and were far more disciplined than there more illustrious opponents and Pearses will have to have a serious resurgence in form if they are to mount a decent attempt at the champioship this year.

O Rourke Cup Senior Football

Padraig Pearses 0-12                                                                                        Elphin 0-9

The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football Team continued on their winning ways with a hard fought win over top of the table Elphin in Elphin on Sunday morning last.

Both teams fielded without some of their regular players but this did not take from a hugely enjoyable game.  The home team started best and led by two points before a four point scoring blitz by Pearses best forward Sean Fahy turned the tide in Pearses favour.

The hard working & effective full forward Paul Moran added a point as did Paul Duke and Niall Murray to leave the half-time score Pearses 0-7 Elphin 0-5.

Playing with the aid of the breeze in the second half Elphin levelled the match mid way through the second half, but full credit to Pearses they battled back well & with Gerry Kelly & Paul Kelly controlled the half back area they set up they set up late scores for the tireless Michael Duignan & Paul Moran.  Thomas Dolan was rock solid in goal for Pearses while the young Ian Duffy also showed his class when introduced.

David Moan & Niall Finneran got through a power of work at certified & are improving along the right lines.

Team:               Thomas Dolan, Aidan Fallon, Damian Donnellan, Kevin Flynn, Paul Kelly, Vinnie Costello, Gerry Kelly, Niall Finneran, David Moran, Ollie Brooks, Paul Duke, Michael Duignan, Niall Murray, Paul Moran, Sean Fahy.

Venue: Woodmount

Date:11th May

Final Score:Pearses 3-7 St. Dominics 0-1

Padraig Pearses Girls were at home to St. Dominic’s on the 11th of May. In beautiful conditions, the girls got off to a slow start with missed chances, however Olivia Sweeney scored a fine point in the 20th minute followed by a well-taken goal.

Louise Egan, Siobhan Scott and Olivia Sweeney gave a fine performance in the forwards and Christina Dolan in the backs. The management were also impressed by substitutes Gina Goldrick and Breda Carty.

After an unlucky 2-point defeat to Roscommon Gaels on the 3rd of May in the opening match of the championship, the girls were deserved winners on the day.

With a new panel of 26 players, the management hope that this commitment and performance will continue into the future.

Hurling Notes 4th April 2004

U14  Hurling  Championship: Padraig Pearses 1-0 Athleague\Tremane 3-8

Our U14 Hurlers found themselves up against a very strong Athleague\Tremane side on Friday April 2nd in Woodmount. Despite an early goal from Kieran O Se, Pearses never looked like troubling their opponents. However Pearses can take heart from some solid performances by Alan Naughton, Michael Power and Conor Downey. Pearses suffered from a lack of potency in attack compared with their opponent’s ruthlessness in front of goal. Pearses goalie Mark Whelan will feel unlucky to have been beaten three times after having a solid game. Despite this setback Pearses will be hoping to be in the shake up come the closing stages of the competition.

Minor Hurling Championship: Padraig Pearses: 1-12 Oran: 1-2

Padraig Pearses took a much-deserved victory from this entertaining, if scrappy minor championship fixture at Woodmount on Saturday April 3rd. Pearses can thank some fine performances particularly from defenders David Loughnane, and Shane Berrigan which limited Oran to long range efforts. However it was Aidan Sweeney at centre forward who was most impressive, finishing with a personal tally of 1-9. His ability to take points coupled with Cathal Kelly’s forceful midfield play was the platform for this victory. The management would also have been impressed with the performances of Adam Egan in goal but also John Paul Dolan and Stephen Cregg whose battling performances were key factors in this victory. However Pearses need to keep their feet on the ground when one considers the quality teams they have yet to encounter

UNDER 14 - FEILE HURLING

Padraig Pearses 0.3                                                                              Four Roads 0.3

Pearses under 14’s played the 1st round of Feile Hurling Competition against Four Roads in Tisrara Community Park on Friday 26th March.  It proved to be a fine contest between two evenly matched teams, although scores were hard to come by there was no shortage of hard graft and commitment by both sides.

Pearses, under manager Brian Kelly really got stuck in from the word go and put it up to the Four Roads lads..

Mark Whelan had a sound game in goal and got good protection from Conor Downey, Alan Naughton (captain) and Aaron Feehily.  The half back line of Tadgh Cogavin, Michael Power and James Kelly broke up numerous attacks and supplied great ball to forwards.  The mid field pair of Sean Ryan and Jason Clogher were excellent all through and played their hearts out.  Our half forward line of Niall Tummalty, Damian Kenny and Thomas Sweeney put in a lot of good quality ball against a very strong and resolute defence.  Full forward line of Michael Kinirons, Kieran O’ Shea and Enda Kelly showed well as did Niall Daly when introduced.

Scores T. Sweeney 0.1 (F) S. Ryan 0.1 J. Clogher 0.1.

Well Done Lads not a bad start!

 CAMOGIE NOTES

UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Padraig Pearses 2.2                                                                              Dominic’s 2.0

Pearses played Dominic’s in Knockcrockery on Saturday 27th March in the 3rd round of the championship.  This was a very keenly contested game with some fine passages of play from both sides.  Pearses led at half time after Helen Kenny scored a fantastic goal after some brilliant work by Deirdre Sweeney.

Dominic’s were back on level terms after 7 minutes of the 2nd half after a fine effort by Susan Spellane went all the way to the net Pearses responded with a point from a free by Deirdre Sweeney soon afterwards.

Louise Egan put Pearses in the driving seat with a goal, a great solo effort and got good goal after a siege on the Pearses goal area.  Helen Kenny scored a lovely point from play after great work by Ethel Egan and Aoife Mc Donnell to bring the game to a close.

Katie Moran made some fine saves and cleared her lines well.

The full back line of Linda O’ Brien, Orlagh Gavin and Lisa Hannon contested every ball and really played well.  Our half break line of Catherine Egan, Carmel Killea (captain) and Sinead Raftery broke up many attacks and time and again broke Dominic’s hearts with their tackling and determination.  Mid fielders Lisa Killeen & Ethel Egan were brilliant all through.

Half forwards Deirdre Sweeney, Linda Sweeney and Aoife Mc Donnell moved the ball really well and posed many problems for the Dominic’s defence.  Full line of Louise Egan, Claire Mc Donnagh and Helen Kenny worked well together and can be very pleased with their performances.

All in all a fine performance by the girls.

Padraig Pearses 1.2                                                                             Shelvin Gaels 0.0

Pearses U-16 Camogie Team had a good win in the 2nd round of the Championship against Shelvin Gaels from Strokestown who were making their debut at underage Camogie this year.

Both teams deserve great credit for fulfilling this fixture – not a day for the faint hearted with high winds and heavy showers the order of the day not to mention the fact that mothers were expecting the day off.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish the Gaels well in the fixture and hope they keep up the good work.

PADRAIG PEARSES CAMOGIE NOTES

Padraig Pearses 1-1                                             Athleague 1-1

Our Under 16 Camogie team played the first round of the championship on Sunday 14th March against Athleague.  The game was played in very blustery and showery conditions and great credit to both teams for their honest endeavours, serving up a very exciting contest which could have gone either way.

Although lacking in fitness levels there was certainly no shortage of passion and determination from both sides and at the end of the day both sides should be happy with a point.

Pearses played with the aid of the breeze and elements in the first half and extended great pressure on the Athleague defence but some wayward shooting combined with good defence kept them at bay. Deirdre Sweeney got a brilliant point after 10 minutes following great work by Carmel Killeen and Ethel Egan now playing with more fluency Pearses forwards came close forcing Athleague to conceal  a 30 metre free.  Deirdre Sweeney sent in a dangerous ball, which was finished to the net by Helen Kenny after great work by Claire Mc Donagh.

The Second half saw Athleague come more and more into the game and asked many questions of Pearses defence. A point by Elaine Daly from a free after 10 mins brought them right back into the final score of the game.

Our defence having little to do – 1st half really proved their worth in the 2nd half led by Carmel Killeen who was brilliant all through. Midfield pair of Lisa Killeen and Ethel Egan played really well. Forwards worked hard all through and all led there moments.

Team & Panel:           Katie Moran, Linda Sweeney, Orlagh Gavin, Lisa Hannon, Catherine Egan, Carmel Killeen, Ethel Egan, Louise Egan, Louise Shine, Deirdre Sweeney, Amy Finnerty, Helen Kenny, Claire Mc Donagh, Linda O Brien, Marian Donohue, Triona Waters, Siobhan Scott, Carol Galvin and Emma Ryan.

UNDER-16 S TACKLE -ALL-STARS’

OUR under-16s took on an AII-Star line-up in Pearses on Sunday,

The All-Stars included a mix of old and new
faces. Our minor stars Cathal Kelly, Shane Berrigan and John Paul Dolan
gave a rousing display and were joined by county medal holders Dinny Cogavin and Tom Donoghue, as well as club legends Tom Shaughnessy, Pat Barrett and Ronnie Dooley.
Unfortunately, Tom Carey and Gerry Kenny got injured in the intense warm-up.

The under-16s showcased all the

Talents that saw them collect three county and Connacht titles under the
guidance of Padraig Dooley and Shane Sweeney. The presentation of
medals to our underage teams was held afterwards in the clubhouse with
guest of honour, Roscommon senior manager, Anthony Cunningham.

A huge crowd attended both the game and presentation and a marvellous
day was had by all.
