Minor Football Championship Semi-Final:Pearses 0-9 St Ciaráns 0-11

Our Sean Hogarty sponsored minor football team ended their championship run last Saturday evening when they went down to a very good St. Ciaran’s team in Ballyforan.

St. Ciarans started the strongest and went into an early 5 points lead. However, the pearses lads stood up to the challenge and went in at half time leading by 6 points to 5 following some great defending from the backs and well worked and converted scores up front, the pick of them being points from Eamon Donoghue and Sean Ryan.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first and St. Ciarans went into a three point lead. Pearses worked well throughout the pitch to pull back the deficit and got to within a point of St. Ciaran’s with 3 minutes to go when Shane Blackweir’s goal chance was well saved by the St. Ciarans keeper. However, Ciaran’s had the final say and went on to win by 2.

The young Pearses team (12 of the starting 15 are underage next year) can be very proud of their performance on the day and can look forward to the future with optimism. Thanks to all the people that came out to support the team and the best of luck to St. Ciarans in the final.

Senior Hurling Championship:Pearses 0-17 Tremane 0-7:

The KLR sponsored Pearses senior hurlers had a good victory over Tremane last Sunday morning in Athleague. The first half was a close affair, but Pearses proved too strong in the second half to pull away comfortable winners in the end, the semi-final against as yet unknown opposition is set for Saturday week.

Junior Girls Camogie Championship Final:Pearses 2-5 Oran 1-11:
The Finnerty Brothers sponsored Pearses Camogie team just lost out to a vastly experienced Oran side in the county Junior Camogie final last Saturday evening in Athleague. This was a fine performance by a very youthful Pearses team and there was never a puck of the ball between them. With goalkeeper Breda Carty in fine form Pearses led by 3 points at half time but a late Oran goal sealed the result for them. Best for Pearses were Breda Carty, Deirdre Sweeney, Louise Egan and Christina Dolan. The club would like to thank the management team of Padraig Dooley, Patty Ward and Belinda Dooley and also Theresa Kelly for her work with the underage set up.

Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final Replay:Pearses 1-10 Kilmore 1-8

The Paul Flynn Construction sponsored Pearses Senior Football team qualified for the semi-final of this year’s championship with a hard fought victory over a never-say-die Kilmore team. Pearses started well with a good Mike Duignan point but 2 Derek Connellan frees put Kilmore in front. Pearses responded well with points from Duignan, Ja Egan and a Sean Fahy free left Pearses leading 4 points to 2 after 15minutes, both sides exchanged further points with Pearses scores coming from another Fahy free and a fisted point from Niall Finneran to leave the half-time score Pearses 0-6 Kilmore 0-4. The second half was a tense affair with Pearses particularly wasteful and allowed Kilmore to level at 0-7 points by the 41st minute Pearses score coming from another Fahy free, but then Pearses hit a purple patch two more Fahy points the second from a free and this was followed by a fine goal by Paul Duke who finished well after good work again from Fahy this left Pearses 5 points clear with 9 minutes left. But Kilmore were not finished, a Paul Garvey free was followed by a penalty which Mossy Dolan saved well, however in the resultant follow up a foot block was adjudged and this time Derek Connellan made no mistake to leave the bare minimum between the teams, some nervy moments ensued but a fine Mike Duignan point eased Pearses in to a 2 point lead which despite a late Kilmore rally they managed to hang on. The Semi-final will be against old rivals Clan na Gael and is provisionally fixed for 3.30pm next Sunday probably in Kiltoom. Team: Tomás Dolan, Denis Whyte, John Whyte, Padraig Kelly, Enda Barrett, Paul Kelly, Declan Duffy, Pat Connell, Niall Carty, Mike Duignan(0-3), , Gerry Kelly, Sean Fahy(0-5,4f), Niall Finneran(0-1) and Ja Egan(0-1).Subs used: Paul Duke(1-0), Damian Donnellan, Eana Ryan and Aidan Fallon.

Minor Football Championship: Pearses 2-10 St Brigids 0-8:

The Hogarty Enterprises Pearses Minor Football Team had a deserving win over St.

Brigets in Pairc an Phairsaigh on Tuesday night last. Pearses played with great determination and their work rate was excellent all throughout the game. Playing with the breeze Pearses led at the break by 2 points, 0-5 to 1-0. In the second half Pearses upheld their game considerably to run out comfortable winners. Eoin Clogher in goal kicked out well during the game. In defence Conor Downey and Alan Naughton were sound in the full back line but Stephen McManus covered acres of ground in this area. The half back line of Anthony Butler, Shane Mulvey and Cathal Dolphin was Pearses best line. At centre field, Eamonn Donoghue and

Aaron Feehily battled hard all day to provide good possession for their forwards. Shane Carty, Padraic Corbett and James Kelly did well in the half forward line for Pearses

while Niall Tumelty and Shane Dolan provided good support for Pearses excellent full forward, Sean Ryan. Pearses introduced Shane Blackweir mid-way through the 2nd half and he made an

Immediate impact. Pearses will know they will have to improve considerably for their semi-final meeting with St. Kierans but they are going the right way and their work ethic is excellent. There were a number of contenders for the man of the match award, with Stephen McManus, Shane Mulvey, Eamonn Donoghue and Sean Ryan all playing well, but in the end it came down to just two. With the inspirational Cathal Dolphin just losing out in this instance to his former Newtown National School Team mate - Shane Dolan.

Club Notes 11/08/2008:

Under 14 Football League Play-off:

Pearses under 14 showed great character after their championship defeat with a good win over Roscommon Gaels in the league play off on Sunday last. Fears of a second successive defeat were quickly dismissed with goals from Eoin Glennon(2), Cormac Clogher and Dominic Egan and some fine points from Adrian Mannion  and Clogher left Pearses leading at half time score by 4-6 to 1-0.

Pearses started the second half playing against the strong wind and rain and by mid point of the second half the game was effectively over as 2 more goals from Eoin Glennon and Cormac Clogher sealed the win.

Best for pearses Eoin Glennon, Cormac Clogher and Graham Hendick.

Pearses would like to extend their congratulations to Adam McManus who was part of the Roscommon side who won the umbro plate finalin Galway last week.

Junior Hurling Championship Final:Pearses 0-8 Four Roads 1-15

Despite a brave display a depleted Pearses side failed to defeat Four Roads in this year’s Championship decider played in perfect conditions in Athleague last Sunday. Pearses more than held there own in the first half with the fine free taking of Christy Sweeney aided by a good sideline cut from John Galvin and a well taken point from veteran Niall Cunningham meant there was just the minimum between the sides at half-time 0-7 to 0-8. The conditions and injuries took its toll on the player’s in the second half and Four Roads ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Under 14 Football Championship Semi-Final: Pearses 2-9 Boyle 1-6

Our Under 14 Team have qualified for the championship Final with a hard fought win against Boyle on Friday last. Pearses were behind at half time 1-5 to 0-3 with Cormac Clogher, Adrian Mannion, and Dominic Egan scoring after Boyle got a great start with a goal and a point within the first 5minutes. Pearses were much more focused in the second half with Adrian Mannion starting the comeback with a pointed free, this was followed by a goal from Ronan Daly, Pearses were on top at this stage but did not seem to be able to score until a well taken point from Darren Kelly midway through the second half and a point from Eoin Glennon levelled the match with about 12minutes left. Adrian Mannion and Cormac Clogher picked off 2 nice points and then Eoin Glennon steped up to blast the ball to the net to score the all important goal, Keith Geraghty was introduced for Dominc Egan and within a minute had fired over a point to secure the win.

Pearses will play either Oran or Castlerea in the final but will have to perform a lot better if they want to be county champions. Larry & Joe want to thank our fans that have supported us all year and would appreciate your support in the Final.

Junior Football League: Pearses 1-12 Castlerea 1-9.

Pearses Junior Footballers continued their good form coming from behind to beat Castlerea by 3 points in Pairc an Phiarsaigh last Wednesday night. Castlerea got off to a flying start and led by 06 to 0-2 Pearses came back into it but still trailed by 1-6 to 0-5 at half time. The turning point came early in the second half when Colm Kelly seized on a an error by the Castlerea goalkeeper to score a goal that was the launchpad for the remainder of the half as Pearses ran out comfortable winners in the end.

The long awaited Senior Football clash between Pearses and St Aidan’s takes place this Wednesday in Pairc an Phiarsaigh at 7.30pm. The club would like to wish Eamonn Mahon and his charges all the best for this clash and your support would be appreciated.

Senior Football Championship:Pearses 1-15 St Aidans 0-9 & Pearses 1-11 Elphin 1-7
The Paul Flynn sponsored Pearses Senior Football team had a very successful week as two victories in four days means they win out group A of this year’s championship. Pearses.started well against Aidan’s with Pat Connell opening the scoring, and in a fine 1st half with both sides trading points Pearses held a narrow lead 0-6 to 0-5 at the break with some good scores from Niall Finneran, Gerry Kelly, Ja Egan and two from Sean Fahey. Pearses dominated the third quarter and despite a missed penalty, points form Niall Carty, Alan Duffy, Sean Fahy 5 and a Paul Duke goal meant the game was never in doubt.

Team: Tomás Dolan, Denis Whyte, Enda Barrett, Padraig Kelly, Aidan Fallon, Paul Kelly, Declan Duffy, Pat Connel(0-1), Niall Carty(0-1), Mike Duignan, Alan Duffy(0-1), Gerry Kelly(0-1), Sean Fahy(0-7 3f), Niall Finneran(0-1) and Ja Egan(0-2). Subs Paul Duke (1-0) and Eana Ryan(0-1).

Pearses then travelled to Elphin last Sunday and came away with another good victory. A soft goal meant Pearses got off to the worst possible start but they responded very well, Paul Duke scored a well worked point and then Pearses took the lead when Niall Finneran lobbed the Elphin keeper for a fine goal Pearses then dominated the rest of the half, with points coming from Sean Fahy(0-3, 2f), Alan Duffy and Ja Egan to lead 1-6 to 1-1 at the break. Elphin came back into the game in the second half with 2 frees but Sean Fahy settled the nerves with a fine point and further scores from Pat Connell, Alan Duffy Paul Duke and Niall Finneran meant Pearses ran out comfortable winners in the end. U14 Football Final Pearses 2-2 Oran 5-15:
Padraig Pearses u14’s were comprehensively beaten by a fine Oran side last Sunday in Hyde Park. They were always behind and trailed by 1-4 before Darren Greene opened Pearses account with a well taken point. Pearses kept in touch with goals from Adrian Mannion and Cormac Clogher and this left Pearses with some hope at half time trailing 2-10 to 2-1. Darren Corcoran then opened the second half scoring with a good point, but that was to be the end of the scoring for Pearses and Oran dominated the rest of the game to run out easy winners. Scorers for Pearses: Adrian Mannion 1-0, Cormac Clogher 1-0, Darren Greene 0-1 and Darren Corcoran 0-1. This was a very good performance from Oran and they had some fine players including Jack Earley, Adrian Cassidy, Michael Gunning, Caroline Gunning and Paul Kenny.

Pearses went in at half-time leading by just one point 1-4 to 0-6 and Western Gaels soon equalised before Pearses dominated the remainder of the match which included 4 points from Ollie Brooks who was a contender for man of the match. Club Notes 07/07/2008:

The U-14 Féile team headed to Cavan/Monaghan last weekend for the Football Féile. The opening game on Friday was held in Drumgarve where Pearses took on the hosts Sean McDermott’s and won by 2-7 to 2-3, on Saturday they followed this with an easy win over Latton O’Rahillys from Castleblayney 3-15 to 1-2 and so set up a crunch match with Aghamore from Mayo in the group decider. Pearses started poorly and conceded 2 early goals and playing into a gale force wind found themselves 10 points behind at half-time, unfortunately this proved too much and despite a good second half showing Pearses fell short in a scoreline of Pearses 2-8 Aghamore 4-6 this was no disgrace as Aghamore went on to win out the competition beating a strong New York in the final.

The club would like to thank Larry Kelly and his selectors for their fine effort in this year’s competition and would like to wish them all the best for the forthcoming championship. Also we would like to thank our sponsors and all who contributed to the funding of both Féile teams, also a big thank you to our hosts Sean McDermotts for their excellent hospitality over the weekend.

Hurling Feile na nGael 2008 U-14:

Pearses U-14 hurlers put up a brave display before bowing out of the Feile last weekend. Played in atrocious conditions Pearses got of to a good start with a 5-14 to 0-1 win over Drumcullen, then came a narrow two point defeat against CRC Gaels from Rath 2-0 to 2-2 both CRC goals came just before half-time in a game that pearses dominated for long periods and they were just unable to get the winning goal at the end. An unfortunate 0–2 to 3-2 defeat to Ballinascreen from Derry ended Pearses interest in the competition. Pearses would like to thank all the parents that travelled in support of their team, Kelly Motor Factors and all our Sponsor’s for their generous contribution to this team and a warm thank you to our generous host’s Drumcullen. The event was a great success with Pearses winning 2 out of their 3 games. Pearses would like to thank the other teams who travelled to Woodmount for the games as it gave all the teams valuable game time under Feile Rules. They then played Boyle in the league last Thursday night winning the match by the bare minimum 1-15 to 4-5. Pearses led at half time 0-9 to 2-2 and could have been beaten by allowing Boyle in for 2 very soft goals in the second half, but Pearses did not give up and after been substituted with an injury after 15 minutes Cormac Clogher was brought back on and scored a vital goal. Boyle did not deserve to lose but their team had to adjust after having a man sent off harshly.Best for Pearses were Adrian Mannion, Shane Naughton, Paul Dolan, Darren Kelly, Ronan Daly, Darren Corcoran and Darren Greene.

Senior Hurling Championship:Pearses 1-10 Four Roads 1-9:

Pearses hurlers continued their good start to this season’s Senior Hurling Championship with a hard fought one point win over Four Roads in Pairc an Phiarsaigh last Sunday afternoon. Aided by a strong breeze Pearses took the lead with a Darragh Mulvey free quickly followed by a good point from Christy Sweeney, Four Roads opened their scoring with a Ray Mulry free but then Pearses dominated the next 10 minutes scoring six points without reply including two fine scores form Michael Donoghue and an excellent effort from Leo Flynn, but some poor wides and the concession of some soft frees allowed Four Roads back into the game to leave the half-time score Pearses 0-8 Four Roads 0-4. Pearses got the second half of to a good start when Darragh Mulvey goaled from an acute angle but as expected Four Roads came back at Pearses 3 points followed and then the pressure was on Pearses after a shot from Francie Grehan somehow found it’s way into the Pearses net, a point from Teddy Galvin pushed Pearses 2 points clear and they did just enough to win by the narrowest of margins. Overall the hosting of the three championship matches was a great success and the club would like to thank all those involved and in particular Sean Berrigan and Mícháel Grenham and the rest of the Ground’s Committee and Mary Sweeney and the Catering Committee for their time and hard work. The next outing is not until the 10th of August.

O’Rourke Cup Senior Football:Pearses 2-10 St Barry’s 2-7:

Senior Hurling Championship:Pearses 2-13 Oran 1-8:

Pearses hurlers got of to a goods start in this season’s Senior Hurling Championship with an eight point win over Oran in Hyde Park last Saturday evening. Although Oran scored first Pearses with the aid of a strong breeze dominated the rest of the half and goals from Shane Sweeney and Daragh Mulvey saw Pearses into a 2-9 to 0-2 half-time lead. A disappointing second half display from Pearses however when they were outscored 1-6 to 0-4 took the gloss of this display and it could have been closer only for some good goalkeeping from Padraic Dolan.

Next weekend Championship Hurling returns to Pairc an Phiarsaigh for the first time in two years when Pearses take on Four Roads in the third (subject to confirmation) match of a triple bill, a big crowd is expected and your support would be appreciated.

O’Rourke Cup Senior Football:Pearses 2-13 St Aidans 2-9:

Pearse’s won their second game of the league campaign with a hard fought victory over St Aidan’s last Wednesday night. Both sides were missing several regulars and after Aidan’s opened the scoring Pearses aided by a strong breeze replied with seven points in a row 3 from Sean Fahy, with the other scores coming from Mike Duignan, Pat Connell, David Moran and Alan Duffy. Aidan’s reduced the gap to 4 with the next 3 points but after a Sean Fahey free, David Moran scored the first of Pearses goals to leave the half time score Pearse 1-8 Aidans 0-4. Pearses stretched their lead further still with points from Pat Connell and Mike Duignan before in the 44th minute David Moran scored his second goal when he finished well after good work from Enda Barrett. Worryingly Pearses allowed Aidan’s to dominate the rest of the game and were hanging on in the end. Best for Pearses were Aidan Fallon, Enda Barrett, Pat Connell, Gerry Kelly and Sean Fahy.

Team was: Thomas Dolan, Damian Donnellan, John Whyte, Denis Whyte, Aidan Fallon, Enda Barrett, John Connell, Pat Connell (0-2 1f), Niall Finneran, Gerry Kelly, Alan Duffy (0-1), Mike Duignan (0-2), Paul Duke, David Moran (2-1), Sean Fahey (0-07, 5f), subs used: Ian Duffy and Kenny Glynn.

U-14 Feile:Pearses 5-5 Oran 1-6.

Pearses U14 team played Oran on Wednesday 2nd and they knew it was going to be a hard game as this Oran team beat Pearses 2 years ago in the U12 League final.

Oran got off to a perfect start and went a goal up after 2 minutes but as this Pearses team is showing that they do not give up and within 5 minutes they had scored a goal of their own through Eoin Glennon. The first half was very tight with Adrian Mannion winning a lot of possesesion in midfield together with Cormac Clogher and it was no surprise that Cormac was involved with a great pass to Darren Corcoran on the 21 yard line who in turn put a high ball in to the edge of the Square and Eoin Glennon was there again to fist the ball to the net. The half finished with a quality score from Adrian Mannion, to leave the score Pearses 2-3 Oran 1-5.

In the Second half Cormac Clogher hit a wonderful point from a free, this was followed by a goal from Keith Geraghty who finished to the net after an Eoin Glennon shot was saved by the Oran goalie. Ronan Daly picked up a ball on the half way line hand passed it to Eoin Glennon who gave a 50 yard pass to Cormac Clogher on the run and he made no mistake from 10 yards putting the ball in the corner of the net for Pearses 4th goal and it was another Keith Geraghty goal that finished the match.

Best for Pearses were: Shane Naughton, Aidan Ward, Conor Fallon, Gavin Downey, Eoin Cogavin, Darren Blackweir, Paul Dolan, Jason Mannion in a defence that only allowed Oran 1 point in the second half, Darren Greene, Darren Kelly, Eoin Glennon (2-0), Adrian Mannion (0-3), Cormac Clogher (1-2) and Keith Geraghty (2-0)

Minor Football League:Pearses 1-6 St Ciarans 0-7.

Our minor team had a good win against St. Ciarans in the league last week. We got off to a great start when a good move including an excellent pass from Ciaran O'Shea which found Padraig Corbett who finished calmly to the net. This early lead was never relinquished with a workman like team effort. David Donnellan's brilliant save midway through the first half proved vital at the end.  St. Ciaran's drew level with 10 minutes to go but a pointed free from Sean Ryan and a well taken score from James Kelly saw us record a two point win at the end.

Team: David Donnellan, Conor Fitzgibbon, Alan Naughton, Jason Murray, Mark Whelan, Shane Mulvey, Shane Dolan, Aaron Fehilly, Eamon Donoghue, Niall Tumbelty, Stephen McManus, Tomas Sweeney, Ciaran O'Shea, Padraig Corbett. O’Rourke Cup Senior Football:Pearses 3-6 Elphin 0-10:

Pearse’s O’Rourke campaign got off to a good start in a cold and windy Pairc an Phiarsaigh last Sunday. Paul Moran kicked a good point for Pearses in the 2nd minute, Elphin quickly equalised and then Sean Fahy scored the first of his 3 goals with a coolly taken finish after good work from Gerry Kelly. Elphin responded well and with the aid of the breeze hit over the next four points. 3 points in 3 minutes 2 from Ja Egan and 1 from Gerry Kelly left Pearses 1-4 to 0-6 points ahead at half-time. Both sides exchanged points before Sean Fahy again coolly slotted home his 2nd goal in the 37th minute after a knock down from Paul Moran in a manner very similar to his 1st half effort. Pearses wrapped up the points when Sean Fahy completed his hat-trick when his free went directly into the Elphin net. Best for Pearses were John Whyte, Enda Barrett, Pat Connell, Gerry Kelly, Sean Fahy and Eana Ryan.

Team was: Joe Connell, Aidan Fallon, John Whyte(0-1), Denis Whyte, Paul Duke, Enda Barrett, John Connell, Niall Carty, Pat Connell,Gerry Kelly(0-1), David Moran, Sean Fahey(3-0, 1-0f), Ja Egan(0-2), Paul Moran(0-1), Eana Ryan(0-1) subs used: Mike Duignan, Aidan Ryan, Alan Duffy, Niall Murray and Alan Duffy.

Ladies Senior football League:

Roscommon Gaels 1-05 Padraig Pearses 1-05:

A youthful but determined Pearses team opened their 2008 league campaign with an away draw against a strong Roscommon Gaels team. Pearses featured just 7 of the team which started in last year’s county final and were second best for long periods. Having trailed by 3pts to 2pts at half time the team showed great commitment to score the last two points of the game to force a late draw.

The Paul Flynn sponsored National Schools 7-a-side Football Blitz took place last Thursday and was a great success. Thank you to all that helped out.

Minor Football League: Pearses 1-8 Strokestown 1-9:

Our minors suffered a narrow one point defeat in the league at the hands of Strokestown on Sunday. The underfoot conditions made football difficult for both sides and we were trailing by a point at half time with the wind at our backs. We went four down 10 minutes into the second half but battled back to draw level only to be beaten by a late point on a final score of 1-9 to 1-8. The next scheduled minor fixture is against St. Ciaran’s in Fuerty on the 16th March. Best of luck to the Pearses lads and all involved with Athlone Community College who are playing the Leinster Colleges “A” final at the weekend.

Junior Hurling Championship Semi-Final: Pearses 2-15 Athleague-Tremane 2-3:

Pearses Junior Hurlers qualified for next week’s Junior Final with a fine victory over Athleague-Tremane in Athleague last Sunday. Pearses forward line was particularly strong with Tomás Seale(0-8), JP Dolan(2-0) and a man of the match performance from Tom Donoghue(0-4) who rolled back the years with a legendary performance at corner forward.

The final is next Saturday at 4pm in Athleague against Four Roads please support.

Minor Football League:Pearses 2-5 Castlerea 1-8.

A depleted minor side put up a fine performance against a strong Castlerea last Sunday in Pairc an Phiarsaigh. Pearses were helped by some fine first half points from Niall Tumulty, James Kelly and David Donnellan. Pearses looked to be heading for victory after Shane Mulvey scored a fine goal which was followed by a well taken penalty from Jason Clogher.  It was not to be however as a last minute penalty gave Castlerea a share of the spoils. Pearses next outing is away to Strokestown next Sunday 1.00pm (subject to confirmation).
