The Battle of Little Big Horn
In 1875, Sioux and Cheyenne warriors left their reservations, angry that white men looking for gold were constantly invading their lands in the Black Hills of Dakota. Under the great warrior Sitting Bull they decided to fight for their lands. The government sent cavalry to force them back to their reservations. The Sioux and Cheyenne however, defeated bands of U.S. Cavalry on two occasions and the Government was alarmed.

It sent a larger force to defeat the large Native American army. One of the leaders of this force was General George Custer, a national hero because of his fighting in the War of Independence against England. However, the cavalry under General George Custer were defeated and killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn. There was an angry reaction to Custer's death in America and the Government fought back fiercely.
