The Arrival of the Europeans

Columbus' Voyage in 1492
Columbus's Voyage
Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who believed the world was round and that therefore, it should be possible to reach the East by sailing West.

Columbus was correct but he did not know that the huge continents of North America and South America were in his way.

In 1492, Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in search of India. When he landed on the islands near America’s east coast, Columbus thought he was in India and understandably, he called the native people ‘Indians’.

Columbus was the first of many European explorers who came to America in search of riches. At first the white man and the native traded happily together. This would change.
