The Great Plains

The Great Plains is a vast region made up of grasslands - often called the Prairie. It also has valleys, streams, and hills.

There is enough rain on the Plains for a thick covering of grass but not enough for many trees to grow. Trees grow only beside the rivers.

Location of the Plains
Before the arrival of the Europeans huge herds of grazing animals fed on the grass. The most important of these was the buffalo, also called 'bison'.
The Native people of the Plains hunted the buffalo and other animals like elk, deer and antelope, for their meat and their hides.
