Understanding Child Abuse
Dates: 20th - 24th November 06
Venue: Tír Na nÓg, Slievenagorta, Ballymore, Co Westmeath.
Cost: €500

Child abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence are significant problems in Ireland today. Professionals working with children and families are regularly working with people affected by these issues. Teachers and child-care workers may not know what to do when a child is at risk. All too often we do not recognise the signs, perhaps misinterpreting the needs of the child and family, or respond in an unhelpful way. Sometimes, we simply fail to respond at all. It is very difficult for professionals to know the best ways to respond when they are concerned for a child’s welfare. This course will help child-care professionals to gain confidence and knowledge to better equip them to deal with these problems and become part of the solution that is so badly needed. Issues covered include:

  • Understanding child abuse – causes and dynamics.
  • Exploring personal responses to child abuse.
  • Recognising problems and potential problems.
  • The Process of Disclosure.
  • The Irish System for responding to concerns and allegations.
  • Responding to allegations about co-workers.
  • Exposure to Domestic Violence as a form of child abuse.
  • Helping the family and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Supporting the child and responding to their needs .
  • Therapeutic responses for the child.
  • Promoting safe, nurturing, care for children in a variety of settings.
  • Caring for the carers – staff have needs too!

During the five days we will focus on developing recognition and intervention skills, and a broad knowledge base and understanding of the dynamics, impact and prevention of child abuse. We will utilise a range of teaching mediums including lectures, role-play, small and large group work, case studies, video, discussions, use of creative media and experiential work. Opportunities to discuss situations of concern will be provided.

Participants are advised not to schedule any work during the week to allow themselves engage fully in the course. Certificates of attendance are presented to each participant.

This training is suitable for: Child-care workers, teachers, family support staff, project workers, social workers, foster carers, day-care and early education staff, therapists, psychologists, and others working with children and families. It is essential training for all who work with children and any clients traumatised by abusive experiences in childhood.
