Current Status of Rock Surname DNA Analysis

The test results so far for all 12/25/37 members show a few distinct groups/branches of the Rock Surname. In Ireland it appears to have spilt into two distinct Haplogroups (I and R1b). The Haplogoup (R1b) has now split into many distinct branches (Haplotypes). Seven all match and appear to be originating from Armagh in Ulster, these Rock's belong too one group. This group are believed to be R1b1c, as Kit No., 21482 has been SNP confirmed as R1b1c. We now have a group forming from North/Dublin Meath and long associated with the Ui Fiachra of County Sligo - these seem to have the R1b1c7 haplotype.

Note: There are two different surnames in the Armagh-Ulster Grouping. The Elder listed has no known paper connection to the Rocks of Armagh, but the surname is found in Ulster. The Barrett name is not the paternal surname.

Aaron David Rock is another Irish branch (R1b1) but as yet with an unknown location the same with Timothy Rock.

Austin Rock with a Dublin City/Longford Irish Branch also (R1b1).

Other Surnames: Roch (possibly Roche) is also R1b1, McCarrick is the I grouping and Kit No., N8149 is believed to be from the South of France or a Meditterian origin.

The Haplogroup (I) has two distinct branches, one has very clear connections with Ireland and the other is not yet determined. The first group is based on the results for Richard Carey Rock. Richards earliest known ancestor [Robert Rock] hails from Cootehill, Co.Cavan who was born about 1795, he belongs to Haplogroup(I). There is a second group within the Haplogroup(I), this Robert Biechele Rock, whose last known ancestor is Peter Rock, born 1801, Penns, USA, the place of origin is not yet established but is most likely Ireland/Britain.

Note: Haplogroup I is much less widespread than R1b, consequently matches to other surnames are much lower in percentage terms than R1b which is by far the most common Haplogroup.
