Synopsis: The story opens with the Lumley family being stranded in the storm and the father Gerard being forced to leave his wife and child and he goes for help. It then shifts several years into the future where we learn his brother, Jack has been looking into the disappearance of his brother and his family. Jack travels to a small town that neighbors Jerusalem's Lot in Maine and attempts to uncover the facts behind the disappearance and try and learn what really happened that night.

During his investigation Jack becomes suspicious of the town folk and believes that they know more than he is being told. Following the events and the limited facts he can pull together, Jack is lead to an elderly man who at first is not willing to speak with him but decides to tell Jack what he witnessed that night when he met his brother.

That night is narrated in the first person by Booth .  Booth details the events that took place during the ferocious snowstorm, when he and his friend Tookey, attempted to rescue the family of a stranded motorist. Instead, they barely managed to save themselves from the man's wife and daughter, who had been turned into vampires. Booth tries to warn Jack that his search may lead him to places he would do better to avoid.  Jack refuses to believe but believes Booth and the other residents are just trying to cover up what really happened.

Jack continues to look into the disappearance and comes face to face with his niece who has not aged and is indeed a vampire. Jack has walked into the lion’s den and by finding what he was looking for is now damned to join the living dead.
