Unusual town park opened in the grounds of Sligo IT  June 2001

A traditional system for learning the Irish alphabet by the use of names of trees is the basis for a new landscaping scheme at Sligo Institute of Technology. The list used was compiled by Ballymote native Canon Andrew Donlevy, who went on to become head of the Irish College in Paris, and the idea originated with Dr Breandan MacConamhna, the institute director who collects antiquarian Irish language books. Some eight thousand trees will be planted and eightenn limestone seats will be placed along a walkway beside the stream in the college grounds, with each seat being inscribed with a letter of the alphabet. The project will mark Dr Macconamhna's retirement from the post of director at the beginning of June.

"Kian Westlife Attacked"

Poor Kian Westlife was attacked by a gang on Sunday night in his home town of Sligo, just 24 hours before he was due to perform a homecoming concert with the band at the Point in Dublin. The muscular muso had a rare night off from the stresses of the 'Life's current tour, and had gone out for a drink with some friends at Sligo nightclub 'Toffs'. When the happy gang stopped for a kebab on thir way home, they were approached by a group of men, one of whom shouted out: "How would you like to play at the Point with a black eye?"

They then attacked poor Kian, knocking him down. He was later taken to hospital for treatment. Kian told the Mirror: "I'm shocked by the attack...I'm going on stage for the first time in front of my home crowd and it's all been ruined."
