MEMBERSHIP OF THE IRISH PLANNING INSTITUTE

               Benefits of membership

There are essentially four types of membership of the I.P.I. , namely,

Corporate,

Affiliate,

 Graduate and

Student Membership.

Below, the generalised requirements for each are outlined so as to guide potential applicants.

CORPORATE MEMBERS

Entry to Corporate membership is open to those who have reached a standard of knowledge, skill and professional responsibility to engage in planning.

Entrants are required to have successfully undertaken a formal study in a recognised planning school and to have gained two years satisfactory experience in planning after obtaining the relevant qualification. One year of such experience must be obtained in Ireland.

For the purposes of the above, the Institute recognises, for example, the Town Planning Diploma and Masters courses of the Department of Regional and Urban Planning, University College, Dublin and the Town Planning Diploma and M.Sc. (Professional) courses of Queen's University, Belfast. Other courses may be recognised by the Institute in accordance with its own set of standards and guide-lines.

Alternatively, a person eligible for equivalent membership of other approved institutes of planning, and who have completed one year's satisfactory planning experience in Ireland, may apply for Corporate membership. The Institute will consider such applications and also applications under the "mutual recognition" terms and procedures as set down by E.C. Regulation. The annual membership fee is currently Euro 127.00 (IR£100.00).

Non-corporate members are termed affiliates and pay a membership fee of Euro 63.50 (IR£50.00).

Graduate members are required to make an application for Corporate membership when they become eligible for this. The graduate membership fee is Euro 95.25 (IR£75.00) per annum.

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP

Persons undertaking studies leading to planning qualifications recognised by the Institute are deemed to be included in the student membership. Such membership can only be maintained while undergoing studies at an approved planning school. There is no charge for student membership.

ADMISSION TO MEMBERSHIP

The Council of the Irish Planning Institute has, in all cases, absolute discretion in deciding whether any person shall or shall not be admitted to membership of the Institute. It should be noted, that the terms of membership outlined above, are for guidance purposes only. The legal position with regard to membership is outlined in the Constitution of the Irish Planning Institute.
