Conference Preview

“Planning in a New Era-

The Practical Implications and Experience of the New Planning Legislation and Policy Framework.”

This is a time of considerable change in spatial planning in Ireland.  The conference will examine how the new initiatives, including the Planning & Development Act, 2000, the National Spatial Strategy, and Ministerial guidelines with respect to such issues as Residential Densities, Retail Planning, Childcare and Landscape and Landscape Assessment are working in practice.

Elements of the new Planning & Development Act have been in force for some time, and the implications and practicalities of working with this legislation as well as the guidelines are beginning to emerge.

These and other current topics will be addressed by leading experts in the field.  Various papers will critically examine these issues and explain how they will work in practice.  Experience of similar initiatives elsewhere will be presented.

Galway is a well established ‘Gateway’ in Ireland.  It provides a good working example of the potential of ‘Gateways’, which are likely to be promoted by the National Spatial Strategy.    It is a lively and attractive city with a good range of services, facilities and accommodation.
