Parental Involvement
Parental Involvement is very important in St. Vincent's G.N.S. At the moment we
have three projects where parental involvement is vital.
- 'Shared Maths' Classes
- 'Shared Reading' Classes
- The Breakfast Club
1. 'Shared Maths' Classes:
'Shared Maths' is where a group of trained adults/parent come into designated class
rooms for six sessions of approximately one hour and play mathematical games with
the pupils in groups. The games are designed to encourage the pupils interest and
understanding of mathematics.
The games can be adapted to facilitate the senior enfants up to the sixth
class pupils. Examples of the games are:
- Attribute Block and
- The Banker Game
2. 'Shared Reading' Classes:
'Shared Reading' Classes involve training three or four parents to work with the pupils
in the reading of specially selected books.
3. The Breakfast Club:
The Breakfast Club is run by the parents of the pupils and has been a
tremendous success story in St.Vincents. The club itself is funded by
the Department of Community - Family Affairs.
The children come
into school at 8.45a.m. They have breakfast with their friends before
the real work of the day begins. The junior classes (junior infants to
2nd class) have breakfast in their classroom, while the older girls have
breakfast in the cookery room. The Breakfast Club is the highlight of
the day for many of the children.
Many of the parents come in at
8 a.m. to prepare baskets for the jumiors. The Breakfast Club has been
running since September 2001.
