Captain Robert Scott.jpgRobert Scott

Captain Robert Scott was a famous English explorer. He hoped to be the first person to reach the South Pole. A man from Norway called Roald Amundsen hoped to reach the South Pole before Scott.

The Race to the South Pole

Scott and his friends had ponies and tractors to pull the sledges. Things started to go wrong. The tractors did not work in the cold. The ponies sank in the snow. Scott and his men had to pull the sledges.

The End of the Race

Scott and four of his friends reached the South Pole in January 1912. They saw a Norwegian flag when they got there. Amundsen had won the race.

The End of the Journey

Robert Scott.jpgIt was the start of winter at the South Pole. One man fell and died. Another man got frost-bite and walked out in the snow to die. Scott and his men had not enough food or fuel. The last words in Scott’s diary were “look after our families”. The frozen bodies of the three men were found 8 months later. Scott’s diary was found beside his body.
