St Patrick

Saint Patrick.jpgThe boys were playing games in their village in Wales. Niall of the Nine Hostages and his gang attacked the village. They robbed it and burned it. They dragged boys and girls to Ireland as slaves. One of the slaves was a boy called Patrick.

Patrick the Slave

Patrick was sold to a farmer called Milchú. He was given the job of minding sheep and pigs on Sliabh Mis. Patrick was very sad and very lonely. He had nobody to speak to because he did not know any Irish. He prayed everyday. He spent 6 years on Sliabh Mis.

Patrick Escapes

One night, he had a dream that there was a ship waiting to take him home. He ran away from Sliabh Mis. He reached the ship and the captain agreed to take him home. At last, Patrick met up with his family. They were delighted because they thought he had gone forever.

Patrick Comes Back to Ireland

Patrick was very happy at home. One night, he had another dream. He dreamed that the people of Ireland were calling him back so that he could tell them about God. He left his family and studied to be a priest. After a few more years, he was made a bishop. He came back to Ireland, and he set up his first church at Saul, near Downpatrick.

Patrick and the High King

At Easter, Patrick went to the Hill of Slane and he lit a fire to remind people about Jesus. The High King was very angry because nobody was allowed to light a fire until the big fire was lit on the Hill of Tara. The High King sent his men to bring back the person who had lit the fire. Patrick came to Tara and he told the High King about God. He used a shamrock to show that there were three persons in the One God.

Patrick’s Work

Patrick spent about 30 more years in Ireland. He told Irish people all about God. He baptised lots of people. He died on 17 March. He is the patron saint of Ireland.
