The Story of Setanta

Setant.jpgSetanta lived near Dundalk. He was seven years of age, and he wanted to join the Macra. The Macra was a group of boys who were trained to run, play with swords and spears, and play hurling. His mother would not let him go, but he begged her. At last, she said that he could go. He brought his sword, his shield, his hurley and a silver ball. On the way, he hit the ball up in the air and then hit it again before it hit the ground.

The King’s Fort

When Setanta reached the king’s fort, he saw boys playing hurling. He joined in. The boys threw spears at Setanta. Setanta got very angry. He knocked down 50 boys. King Conor, who was also Setanta’s uncle, was angry at first. When he heard who Setanta was, he welcomed Setanta and let him join the Macra.
