A Little bit of Background

Inishbofin Island, Donegal, is situated in the Gaeltacht. It is 3 km, almost 2 miles from the mainland, Magheroarty (Gortahork ).

The year-round population of eight swells to 150 in the summer on the 300 acre island. There is no regular ferry. The Post office was closed in October 1984. There are no shops or pubs and there are no religious services.

Fishing and agriculture are on a part-time basis, with some sheep and cattle. There is no health service.

With no public water scheme and no public sewerage system the island has been very neglected. There is no public generator and no school facilities.

Transport is by foot and tractor.
