February 2006 Bosco Newsletter Ulster Juvenile Championships - Odyssey Arena Belfast Over the two days of the 18th and 19th of February athletes from all over the Ulster province came together at the magnificent Odyssey arena in Belfast to compete in the Ulster Juvenile athletics championships. This
year the event was held in conjunction with the National Senior indoor
championships which saw such notables like James Nolan running in the 1500
metres and Pauline Curly in the womens 5000 metres. St.
John Bosco took a total of thirty one athletes to the arena and all competed to
their best ability. The club won a total of six gold, two silver and three
bronze medals. Athletes
attending included Rose McCauley, Dawn Hughes, Gavin Walsh, Christopher Britton,
Ryan Brogan, Jarlath Ruane, Sarah Martin, Haley O'Neil, Sarah Gallagher, Felicia
McHugh, Mary O'Kennedy, Christopher Doherty, Tanya Friel, Ciaran Cornyn, Rose
McCauley, Barry Griffin, Molly O'Gara, Ciara Griffin, Ciara Boyle, Caoimhe
O'Connor, Derek Walker, Amy Brogan, Daniel Darby, Stephen Burke, Louise Harvey,
Rory McGee, Aoife O'Connor, Fergal Gillespie, Fiona Boyle, Kitty O'Kennedy. Some
of the highlights of the two days included Amy Brogans second place finish with
a time of 8.6 sec in the girls 1993 hurdles. Amy has seen her performance
improve in this event steadily over the last number of months and her silver
medal was well deserved. Aoife O’Connor took double gold in the 1992 girls
Long jump and the 60 metre sprint. Louise Harvey was another double gold medal
winner in both the 1993 girls high jump and 60 metre hurdles. Sara Martin
running in the final of the 1990 girls 60 metre hurdles and competing in her
first provincial championships took a bronze medal. Kitty O’Kennedy produced a
magnificent performance in the 1992 girls 60 metre hurdles. The young Donegal
athlete went into her final as the favourite and did not lose sight of her goal
to lift the gold medal. In
the boys competition Jarlath Ruane threw a best of 11.76 metres in the boys 1990
shot putt to take first place and went on to take a bronze behind club mate
Christopher Britton in the 60 metre hurdles. Felicia
McHugh did very well to earn a place in the final of the 600 metres for 1994
girls as did Ciaran Cornyn in the 1994 boys 60 metres. Both Daniel Darby and
Ryan Brogan set new personal bests in the boys long jump. Ulster Juvenile Championships - Finn Valley Centre Athletes from Ulster gathered once more to complete the Ulster Indoor programme started at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast last weekend. This time on Sunday 26th of February the location was closer to home and a warm welcome awaited athletes to the Finn Valley centre. The club was successful in six relay events including firsts in Girls under 14, 15 and boys under 17. Silver medals were gained for the boys under 12 and 13 teams and the girls under 13. Many parents travelled and the club and athletes want to thank them for their support. Coaches who took charge of teams on the day included Eamon Harvey, Jackie Harvey, Geraldine O'Connor, Paul O'Gara and David Doherty. Coach Patricia Britton who put a lot of work into getting teams ready for competition was unfortunately absent due to a heavy cold. St. John Bosco were well represented in relays with ten teams competing. Athletes representing the club included Caoimhe Cox, Ailish O’Gara, Claire Brady, Lauren Sheerin, Amy Nesbitt, Katie Reagan, Karen Tracey,Elaine McIntyre, Niamh Boyle, Ciara Martin, Emma Brady, Kelley McGroary, April Gildea, Emmett Doogan, Kalvin McShane, Darren Doherty, Ciaran Cornyn, Ben Sheridan, Gary Blain, Karl Griffin, Felicia McHugh, Andrea Keaney, Leeane McInaw, Mary O’Kennedy, Molly O’Gara Ciara Boyle, Ciara Griffen, Nicola Coyle, Kitty O’Kennedy, Aoife O’Connor, Louise Harvey, Amy Brogan, Jennifer McIntyre , Christopher Britton, Jarlath Ruane, Ronan Harvey, Paul McIntyre. |
