National Indoor Juvenile Championships - Nenagh week 1

Eight athletes from the St. John Bosco Athletic Club travelled to Nenagh on Saturday and Sunday the 25th and 26th of March to compete in the National Juvenile Indoors.

All of the winter months training paid off when the club took home three silver and three bronze medals.

On Saturday morning two of the clubs athletes young Aoife O’Connor u-15 and Amy Brogan u-14 competed in the 60m sprints. Both girls made it through to their respective finals with Aoife making the podium and a silver medal with a time of 8.16 sec.

Jarlath Ruane competing in the under 17 men’s shot putt threw a bronze medal putt of 12.59m. This is a new personal best for the aspiring all rounder. Also competing in the under 14 girls shot putt was Haley O’Neill and she competed very well in this her first national competition but was placed outside of the medals on this occasion.

Five athletes were on the track on the Sunday morning competing in the sprint hurdles. In the under 14 girls event two club athletes made it through to the finals with Louise Harvey winning her heat outright and Amy Brogan finishing in second place in her heat in what was to be a very fast race. In an exciting final and a blanket finish it was Amy brogan who went on to finish second with a time of 9.76 sec with Louise third in a time of 7.79 sec. 

Louise Harvey went on to compete in the under 14 girls high jump and finished in fourth place with a new personal best of 1.48m.

Kitty O’Kennedy in the under 15 girls hurdles came into the race as the Ulster champion and was placed fifth in her final.

Aoife O’Connor was back in action on day two and took a bronze in the under 15 girls long jump competition with a jump of 4.97 metres.

In the under 17 men’s hurdles the race was a close competitive one with the Bosco athletes Christopher Britton finishing in second in a time of 9.01 sec and Jarlath Ruane in fifth.

The weekend concluded with Dawn Hughes competing in the under 18 girls shot putt. Dawn took a fourth place finish with a throw of 10.65m.
