Saleen Camp Log
(By
Andrew)
On Saturday morning at about 10.20 we
walked down the beach and then up onto a field with the
tents.
We found a spot and began to pitch them. One of the tents
poles was broken, so we couldn't use that
tent. We had 2 tents left and they had to fit the 5 of us.
(Ruairi, Cathal and Colin were supposed to come
but they were too tired, after there day of swimming.
When the 2 tents, the Islantic and the shelter were
up, we put on a kettle for tea and coffee. We brought all
the gear up from the trailer and put it in the
tents. A little while later the beavers arrived and they
were running all over the place. We played a
|
couple of games and. then Tom had
to go to Tramore to get food and drinks. He got 5 bits of
grass and
whoever picked the 2 longest bits was going to Tramore
with him. Christof and myself got the 2 longest
bits so we went with him. We went to Super Value and
started getting stuff. When we came to the
cooked section Tom started saying that the chickens were
too dear and that they had to feed loads of scouts. So m
the end the woman gave him the chickens for &2.50
each instead of&3.99, We got the rest
of the stuff and headed back. When we got there, Stephen,
Matt and Nicholas were making a kind of
nag with a neckerchief, a pole and some string. The
beavers were gone for a walk (thank god) so we had
a bit of peace and quite. Tom, Christof and myself had a
couple of burgers because we didn't have any.
Then we kicked the ball about for a while. When the
beavers came back it was time for them t to go, so
we watched them off. When we went back up to the tents
the shelter was down, so it had just lasted until
they had gone. We decided to go for a walk a little while
later. We went a couple of hundred metres
and stopped. We had a game. Nicholas and Christof were on
and Tom, Matt, Stephen and myself had
to get back to camp before Nicholas and Christof caught
us. We just about got back first, so we won.
We decided to play another game. We had 2 whistles and 2
people had them. Every 30 seconds they
had to blow it, and the rest of us had to by and catch
them. After a while Tom had a whistle and we
heard it coming from the middle of a bush. We kept on
saying "he's in here, he's in here" but we
couldn't
find him. A few minutes later he came out and then we
stopped playing. Then Matt and I cooked the
dinner. When it was ready everybody took what they wanted
and when the beans were ready I put some
on Tom's plate and on my plate and then I dropped the pot
and they went all over the ground, so we
were the only ones who had them. When we were finished
Nicholas and Stephen washed up. A while
later Tom had 5 packets of crisps and he went around to
bushes and we had to find them. It took us a
while, but we found them in the end. During the game,
John arrived. We went up to his car and got a
load of equipment out of it and brought it back to camp.
He gave us a kind of small pickaxe, and
Nicholas went mad using it. We tied a thick bit of rope
to a bush and made knots in it and we climbed
up and down it. We started playing with the Nerf. Paul
and his kids arrived and we started up a game of
rounders, dividing ourselves into different teams. It
went fine for the first while and then we started
making up our rules as we went along. We could stop the
team from getting to the base by tackling
them. Tom started doing these big diving tackles and
brought a couple of us down. The game ended a
bit after that because Paul had to go. We walked up to
the car with him and then we went to get some
wood for the fire in the night. We were waiting for
Nicholas and Christof who were way behind, so we
went off without them. We got some wood and went and
looked at an old farm. We went back and
collected the wood and went back to the car park where
Nicholas and Christof were waiting for us. They
asked us where we went and we told them they were too
slow and we went off to get wood for a fire.
We gave them all the wood to carry back to camp for being
so slow.
When we got back, Stephen and myself started the fire,
and after a while we put on some sausages. John
was showing us his survival kit that he got in England,
which was very handy. When the sausages were
ready we eat them and sang a few songs. We saw this big
dog by our tents, which then went off. We
decided to play the game with the whistle in the dark,
but it didn't last that long. John had this kind of
plastic stick and if you bent it would glow green. We
played a game with it. We threw it around and
whoever didn't catch it had to go down on their knees and
different ways. After a while we had a drink
and Tom told us a few stories and then we went to bed.
The next morning we got up at about 9.30 and we had
breakfast I helped John bring his gear back down
to his car, because he had to go home and organise a
barbeque. I went back and we took down the 2
tents, but left the Islantic up which had all the gear in
it. We went for a walk to Brownstown Head and a
cub called Luke and Tom's son Christopher came with us.
The whole way there Nicholas and Christof
were way behind. When we were about halfway there we
stopped to have a break. It took the other 2
about 15 minutes to get to where we were. We left them
have a rest and then headed off When we got
there they were still way behind. We had our lunch,
looked around and took a few pictures and went
back to camp. When we got there we had a drink while
waiting for Nicholas and Christof to return. We
decided that Stephen, Matt and myself would take down the
tent and Nicholas and Christof would take
all the gear to the trailer for being slow. When
everything was packed away we threw around the rugby
ball until 4.00 when our parents came to pick us up.
