Edna and Martin at Newbrook Race Course"What Dreams Are Made of" is the story of Edna McCabe of Assumption Road, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland. In her book Edna tells of moving, as a child, from married quarters in Portobello Barracks, Dublin, to Claremount Street, Dublin and then on to Rathmines. She tells of childhood visits to Portsmouth, England and the Newbrook Race Course in Mullingar.

 
We then learn how Edna met her future husband Martin McCabe of Mullingar. Edna traces married life in Athlone from her first flat in Bastion Street, to the death of her beloved Martin. Along the way, we glimpse life in centre of Athlone in 1947. We see the ever present River Shannon and comings and goings of fish sellers and pawnbrokers. We learn of a time when milk was sold "loose" and clothes were sold "over the counter".

 

Later we get to know of Martin's interest in the scouting movement, and happy times around the campfire in Cliffony, County Sligo. Then there was the day that Martin set off for a tour of duty with the United Nations in the Congo, and the day Edna's youngest son, Declan, set off for a new life in America.
