In 1992 the Army consisted of 54000 troops. Today, after a thorough reorganization comprising the suspension of conscription, the Army counts about 27000 service men and women of which 5200 work in international organizations (NATO, WEU,...) or in interforces organizations such as the Interforces Territorial Command or General Headquarters. Some 2000 troops are part of the Belgian Forces in Germany. Most of them belong to the 17th Mechanized Brigade based at Spich near Cologne.

The Belgian Army consists of a large number of units all belonging to different Branches. To avoid complicating matters, we can state that besides an Army Staff, the Army is composed of three main commands:
the Operational Command
the Combat Support Division                          
the Logistic Support Division
