COULD HAVE: - 1:25000 Mourne Country Map (For the Mournes) or Sheet No. 36 OSI 1:50000 (for the Cooley's) - Compass

GOOD IDEAS: - Carry some emergency rations - Have a change of clothes in the car

Wee Binnian Hillwalking Festival

 

Well, it is here again, our annual hillwalking festival. It is not too late to spread the word. With a reputation firmly established for great sociability, combined with an ability to put together a challenging walking programme, the Wee Binnian Festival offers great non-circular walks in the Mournes, Slieve Gullion and Cooley Mountains with grades catering for all.

 

Why not come along to this year’s festival and find out what makes the Wee Binnian festival so special.  Join us for a weekend of walking and craic from 9th to 11th September 2011, based at the Killeavy Football Club, Newry, Co Down.  Registration Friday: 1pm, Sat and Sun 8.45am. 

 

Blister Ball

Even if you don’t walk you can still join the fun at the Blister Ball, at 8pm Saturday 10th September in Killeavey Football Club.  Music by ‘Smooth’, Tickets £15/€18

 

Calling all Members, Your club needs you..... Volunteers Needed: Volunteers are again are needed to assist the committee at this years’ festival.  There are roles in – Refreshments, Registration, Car Parking, Tickets etc.  Email weebinnians@eircom.net or phone or text 00353 (0) 86 843 4440 or 0044(0) 75 9239 3801. Everyone involved in this festival is a volunteer, from the walks leaders to the “Mr & Mrs Doyles” to the Registration staff.

 

Sandwiches please:

The committee are calling on members to bring along some cakes, buns and sandwiches etc to the après walk party on Sunday afternoon, Killeavey Football Club 4pm.  A major Raffle will be held at this gathering. 

Exact Money Please:  To make the registration process at the festival more manageable for the organisers could walkers bring the exact currency for the walk ie  have €18 in change if walking  for 2 days/ or a £10 sterling note.

Leaders Meeting: A short meeting for all leaders took place on Monday 28th August at 7.30, to finalise arrangements for this year’s festival.  A Big Thanks to all the leaders that attended.

Other News:

UFRC Mountain Navigation Courses: Places available on the advance courses

 

The UFRC are organising two Navigation course through Tullymore Mountain Centre on Saturday 24th September 2011. The first one is a Basic Navigation Course for those who wish to start learning. The course includes, Understanding the map, Measuring distance on a map, Principles of pacing and timing, Understanding the compass and basic principles of taking a bearing. This course includes classroom and outdoor sessions.

 

The second is for those who want to further their skills. It is an Advance Course. The course includes: Re-cap on the map in detail, Detail contour interpretation, Linear features, Planning a navigation leg, taking an accurate bearing. Wee Braveheart Walk  (non Wee Binnian Event)

Roger Connelly and Jock McArdle are again running a special walk; open to all including families to start the ball rolling on the Braveheart fund raising in aid of charity.  Over the past years £1000’s have been raised by this venture in aid of The Childrens’ Hospice.

 

The Wee Braveheart Walk will be held on Sunday 18th September, commencing at Carrick Little Car Park at 11am.  A bus will depart from Dundalk at 10am.  Refreshments will be served after the walk and donations to the fundraising will be requested.  Contact Jock +00353(0)863954830 or Roger for details.

Sperrintrek 2011: Autum Hill Walking Festival:

There will be two walks during each weekend, with walkers having the opportunity to choose either a Grade A or Grade B walk on the Saturday.
