COULD HAVE: - 1:25000 Mourne Country Map (For the Mournes) or Sheet No. 36 OSI 1:50000 (for the Cooley's) - Compass

GOOD IDEAS: - Carry some emergency rations - Have a change of clothes in the car

25th Anniversary trip to Samoens France June 10th – 17th 2012

 

Additional important information:

Applications for places on the trip are to be made on the next walk Sunday 28th August to Des McConville.  There are 50 places.

 

A member may apply for a maximum of three places for other members (total 4).

 

Baggage:  You may take one piece of cabin baggage, max size 22” x 16” x 8” 10kg.  Your rucksack MAY qualify but this is your responsibility.  You cannot take walking poles in hand luggage.  On board baggage up to 20kg is €20 each way per bag.  This cost will be additional to you depending upon your needs.  Booking it at the airport is €40 per bag each way.

 

You must provide your own travel insurance.

 

Please place the deposit of €100 for each person, into an envelope with your name(s) on the outside and enclose a completed confidential booking form with traveller details.  (see link: Click here for the form. (This opens up to a word document.)

 

On the form you will be asked to state if you wish to avail of our Budget Plan, paying €100 per month until Feb 2012 (approx) or Single Payment on demand (e.g. when flights are booked).

 

Please note that changes to the booking with the airline will be costly so please be careful with your decisions regarding baggage and Passport names and details.  You will be asked to carry any additional costs incurred as a result of subsequent alterations.  Please ensure your passport is valid for June 2012.

Wee Binnian Annual Hillwalking Festival Website:

Our Annual Hillwalking Festival is on between Fri 9th September and Sunday 12th September.   Each year club members make up about half of the participants in this non-profit festival of walking and craic.  Why not come along and enjoy a range of great walks over the three days.  Follow his link for more details. 

 

Sandwiches please

The committee are calling on members to bring along some cakes, buns and sandwiches etc to the après walk party on Sunday afternoon, Killeavey Football Club 4pm.  A major Raffle will be held at this gathering. Even if you don’t walk you can still join the fun at the Blister Ball, at 8pm Saturday 10th September in Killeavey Football Club.  Music by ‘Smooth’, Tickets £15/€18

 

October Weekend:

 

There are three places left on this trip. 

This year’s October Weekend is again to the magnificent Clonmel Parks Hotel, Clonmel Co Tipperary http://www.clonmelparkhotel.com from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th October 2011 with the walking in the magnificent Galtee Mountains and Glen of Aherlow. The price of the trip is €95. The price includes two nights B&B and 1 Dinner (Saturday evening) and use of local coach to facilitate walks.

UFRC Mountain Navigation Courses: Places available on the advance courses

 

The UFRC are organising two Navigation course through Tullymore Mountain Centre on Saturday 24th September 2011. The first one is a Basic Navigation Course for those who wish to start learning. The course includes, Understanding the map, Measuring distance on a map, Principles of pacing and timing, Understanding the compass and basic principles of taking a bearing. This course includes classroom and outdoor sessions.

 

The second is for those who want to further their skills. It is an Advance Course. The course includes: Re-cap on the map in detail, Detail contour interpretation, Linear features, Planning a navigation leg, taking an accurate bearing. Wee Braveheart Walk  (non Wee Binnian Event)

 

Roger Connelly and Jock McArdle are again running a special walk; open to all including families to start the ball rolling on the Braveheart fund raising in aid of charity.  Over the past years £1000’s have been raised by this venture in aid of The Childrens’ Hospice.

 

The Wee Braveheart Walk will be held on Sunday 18th September, commencing at Carrick Little Car Park at 11am.  A bus will depart from Dundalk at 10am.  Refreshments will be served after the walk and donations to the fundraising will be requested.  Contact Jock +00353(0)863954830 or Roger for details.

Mourne Mountain Rescue Team:

 

The Mourne Mountain Team has produced a new video showing them carrying out a rescue in the Mournes. It stars some of our Members. Davy Jes, Sam Kerr and “the casualty” Ned Scott from The Friends of the Mountain” . It is on Youtube and it is nearly 12 minutes long.  Click here to view it.

For those who are interested in photography might be interested in this competition. The Ring of Gullion in conjuction with Newry and Mourne Council  are organising a photographic competition. In other news, I just spent the morning carrying out the first round of the Wider Countryside Survey at Spelga. Great sunny day for butterflies, I recorded more than 50, and also spotted nesting snipe. I can tell you that if any of you are planning to come along on the butterfly survey day in August, please bring your wellies. It is very boggy!
