Women of the North West is an non-governmental organisation located in the rural

region of North Mayo. It is a registered company limited by guarantee whose

directors are drawn from local communities.

Women of the North West operate as a network of women's groups and community

activists. The organisation seeks to provide economic and social development for

families. Community employment, social policy research, analysis and lobbying are

some of the strategies utilised to realise this aim. On going organisational costs are

financed by core funding from the National Department of Social Community and

Family Affairs. The organisation grew from activity generated by the Kilfian Women

in Sports group, which was founded in 1986. In it's short history, the organisation has carried out

research and training as well as developing its role as a partner in the local community and in

national networks and at European level. It maintains and fosters strong links with local political
