The percentage moisture content (M.C.) of
timber, or simply the amount of water in the timber when the
log is brought to the sawmill can be as high as 89%. Timber in
this condition is refered to as green timber. Percentage moisture
content is worked out by using a formula in the following way:
Moisture Content(M.C.) % = |
Wet weight - Dry weight |
x I00 |
Dry weight |
The most accurate method of calculating M.C.
is to dry out a sample of wood in an oven and apply the above
formula. An easier, but less accurate method, is to use an instrument
called a moisture-meter. |
