Moisture Content

The percentage moisture content (M.C.) of timber, or simply the amount of water in the timber when the log is brought to the sawmill can be as high as 89%. Timber in this condition is refered to as green timber. Percentage moisture content is worked out by using a formula in the following way:

 Moisture Content(M.C.) % =

 Wet weight - Dry weight
 x I00

 Dry weight

The most accurate method of calculating M.C. is to dry out a sample of wood in an oven and apply the above formula. An easier, but less accurate method, is to use an instrument called a moisture-meter.

This electronic instrument has two electrodes or prongs which are pressed into the wood. The M.C. may be read from a dial or screen
