Shiatsu

Shiatsu is an ancient and widely practised form of Japanese massage which aims to heal mind, body and spirit by balancing the flow of energy, or ki, throughout the body. By applying pressure to individual acupoints along the various meridians (Acupuncture energy pathway) lines within the body using fingertips, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, knees and sometines feet, Shiatsu has a deeply relaxing effect on the body and produces an overall sense of well-being. This is an holistic therapy which can deal with all manner of physical ailments as well as taking all manner of emotional, spiritual and psychological problems into account.

SOMA Neuromuscular Integration

SOMA is a system of bodywork, which works by way of the fascial network, to release chronic, stored structural aberrations, and effectively realign the entire body. Through the ten session format, the body rebalances itself in gravity, to become more efficient and healthier with greater resistance to disease and injury. People notice more coordination and grace after the sessions. As a result, the body can process experiences more effectively, and with greater awareness, which in turn leads to enhanced learning and perceptual abilities. Qualities like self-reliance and creativity spontaneously emerge. Movement is life, and with the expanded movement range, the real joy and satisfaction of being alive can emerge.

SOMA was developed by Bill Williams, PhD and Ellen Williams, PhD in 1977. Dr. Williams was the first Rolfer to depart the Rolf Institute and develop SOMA structural work. In the sixties and seventies structural work focused primarily on body structure, whereas, the SOMA work began to embrace the bodymind as a non-separate whole. The SOMA theory and teaching all reflect this basic foundation of wholeness of body mind and spirit.

Somatic Experiencing®
(Peter Levine's Trauma Healing)

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a form of body psychotherapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized. Animals in the wild utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy arousal associated with defensive survival behaviors. These mechanisms provide animals with a built-in ''immunity'' to trauma that enables them to return to normal in the aftermath of highly ''charged'' life-threatening experiences.

Although humans are born with virtually the same regulatory mechanisms as animals, the function of these instinctive systems is often overridden or inhibited by, among other things, the ''rational'' portion of our brains. This restraint prevents the complete discharge of survival energies, and does not allow the nervous system to regain its equilibrium. The undischarged energy remains in the body, and the nervous system becomes stuck in ''survival mode.'' The various symptoms of trauma result from the body's attempt to ''manage'' and contain this unused energy.

SE employs the awareness of body sensation to help people ''renegotiate'' and heal their traumas rather than relive them. With appropriate guidance into the body's instinctive ''felt sense,'' individuals are able to access their own built-in immunity to trauma, allowing the highly aroused survival energies to be safely and gradually discharged. When these energies are discharged, people frequently experience a dramatic reduction in or disappearance of their traumatic symptoms.

SomatoEmotional Release ®

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that helps rid the body and mind of the residual effects of past trauma and associated negative responses. Its origins date to the discovery in the late 1970s by John E. Upledger, DO, OMM, and biophysicist Zvi Karni, PhD, that the body often retains, rather than dissipates, physical forces resulting from an accident, injury or emotional trauma. The trauma causes the body to isolate the dysfunctional area, creating what Dr. Upledger has termed an "Energy Cyst."

Although a reasonably healthy body can work and adapt to Energy Cysts, extra energy is required to perform normal bodily functions. As years pass, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms and dysfunctions begin to appear that become increasingly difficult to ignore or suppress.

SER works to assist patients toward the physical identification and elimination of these Energy Cysts by enabling them to re-experience and thereby resolve the unpleasant incidents.
