Immigrated from Ireland to W. Gwillimbury, Simcoe co., Ontario, Canadain 1834. In 1835 his son Thomas was born in that place. In 1853 hemoved to Wallace twp., into the "Queen's Bush" which was mostlywilderness at that time. He purchased 300 acres there. A "John Read"was listed as a pre-1837 pioneer for West Gwillimbury, Con. 2, Lot 2.
The following record is probably not the same John Reid, though theyboth immigrated in the same year:
Reid, John, age 24, year of record = 1834 Port of Londonderry. Alist of Crew and passengers on board the Brig 'Ambassador' of SaintJohn, New Brunswick, Thomas Vaughn Master, and bound for Saint John,N.B.. Certified at the Custom House at Londonderry on 26 April 1834.Transcribed from (film of) original documents in the collection of theArchives of New Brunswick: film F9798. John Reid, 24, laborer fromCo. Derry, was travelling with a William Reid, 20, laborer from Co.Derry. If this is our John Reid, we would expect to see his wife and4 children., and would expect John to be about age 40.
[1388] An obit in the Listowel Banner of 17 Mar 1871 says that John Reid wasaged about 75 years at death, making his birthyear about 1796. The1871 census shows a John Reid in Wallace twp., Perth co., age 78, bornin Ireland, Wesleyan Methodist. A note on the census indicates"deaths in the preceding 12 months up to 2 April 1871". He could havebeen born as early as 1793. He could have been age 41 when heemigrated in 1834.
