We visited Hamburg for a long weekend as Hapag-Lloyd Express are now offering direct flights from Dublin to Hamburg. And good value they are, too.

We had a lot to fit into the three-or-so days. Firstly, I wanted to visit my grandmother's grave; we also wanted to catch up with some of my relatives; Vally kindly offered to put us up for the weekend and his wife Renate came up from Gelnhausen (near Frankfurt) as well.

This allowed us to spend some time together visiting the Christmas market in Hamburg as well as going to the Dom, which is the massive fun fair that's held three times a year. I hadn't been in about 20 years!
It was great fun sampling the Glühwein and hot almonds with cinnamon or chomping away on Bratwurst with mustard in a bun, then sampling more Glühwein, and ... You get the idea.

Aside from the epicurean delights, we also visited the Michel, which is the name for the St. Michael's Church in Hamburg. It is the city's main church and a bit of a symbol for the place, a bit like the Eiffel Tower for Paris or the Brandenburg Gate for Berlin (though not as famous).

We also went to the AOL-Arena to see Hamburg SV play Hannover in a Bundesliga match. As luck would have it, Hamburg lost. Typical! Still, the atmosphere was good and Úna said she would go again! What are we waiting for...
