DEFINITION

1.      A Community Tutor is a person who will teach at Stage 1 Programmes and/or possibly elements of Stage 2 Programmes [see Note 1 re. Stages].

2.      An eligible candidate will be a person who has a particular skill (e.g. Literacy Tutor) or vocational experience and/or skill and have an aptitude, skill and/or training in the learning/teaching area.

3.      All other things being equal, preference will be given to candidates who reside within, or adjacent to, or who otherwise have strong connections with the community within which the service is being offered.

Note 1 – Stages

The Cork City Partnership has identified 3 stages of provision of tutoring:

1.                  Stage 1 – For people who lack basic skills such as literacy and numeracy and who may find it difficult to seek out the services they need. This is an introductory stage and offers opportunities to adults who may be apprehensive about participating in learning situations. The Department of Education suggests that these can be further divided into three categories:

1.      Level 1: Those without reading or writing skills, or with very poor skills

2.      Level 2: Those who have an acceptable reading standard but whose writing/spelling skills are not adequate to enable them to participate effectively in social and economic life

3.      Level 3: Those whose skills were adequate on leaving school, but now need updating to facilitate a return to further education and training

(Note: It is possible for someone at Level 2 or Level 3 to be participating at Stage 2 or even Stage 3, but to receive back-up from a Stage 1 Literacy Service)

2.                  Stage 2 - For people who have sufficient learning skills and confidence, can identify the service they need but are required to complete pre-vocational type programmes in preparation for Stage 3 Programmes.

3.                  Stage 3 – For people who can identify their needs accept a programme of vocational training and are capable of participating in structured group-based learning.
