Home Economics Programmes

Home Economics programmes are available in the Post Primary, Post Leaving Certificate and Third level sectors.

In the Post Primary sector Home Economists are involved in programmes such as the Junior Certificate, the Junior Certificate Schools programme, Transition Year, Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Vocational, Leaving Certificate Applied, Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme, and Post Leaving Certificate programmes. In addition Home Economists work in Youthreach, Special Education and Adult Education.

Home Economics provides good training for life and most programmes take a holistic approach to the subject covering areas such as food studies, textile studies, family resource management, consumer studies and social studies. In addition some programmes include components such as catering, childcare, special needs, craft or tourism.

At third level a four year B.Ed degree is available in Home Economics teacher education.
