What is Home Economics?
Home Economics
is one of the "option" subjects in the Irish school curriculum.
It aims to offer
practical and theoretical training, within a widely based life skills
curriculum, emphasising the importance of developing pupils as effective personal and family managers within a rapidly changing
social environment.
Home Economics
teachers and pupils participate in programmes in schools,
which employ cooperative group work and planned investigative approaches
in order to obtain information and/or develop products. These
interpersonal applied skills aid the holistic educational and personal development of the pupil
and prepare pupils for active participation in the modern world.
At Junior
Certificate level it is studied by one third of all examination
candidates. Home Economics
addresses all aspects of family life and daily living such as food and
nutrition, healthy living, clothing and shelter, child care,
interpersonal relationships, and consumer behaviour. The unifying focus
is responsible decision-making and purposeful managerial
action.
