Reader Review
This book is a "must have" if you
suffer from these conditions!, November 9, 1997
Reviewer: Edna Plafcan
(plafclan@erols.com) from Pennsylvania, USA
If you have fibromyalgia and/or chronic myofascial pain
syndrome(s), do yourself a favor and read this book and
take it with you to your next appointment with your
physician! (...)
This book thoroughly describes what these conditions are
(and aren't); common conditions and why they occur;
methods on how to deal with these conditions on a daily
basis; tools to help you with the healing process; and
lists additional resources, additional reading lists, and
suppliers of health care items. And it is all done in an
easy-to-read, easy-to-understand format. I was diagnosed
with fibromyalgia 20 years ago, and with chronic
myofascial pain syndrome 10 years ago. I have not only
had to deal with the frustration of the symptoms of these
conditions, but also the condescending attitude of many (not
all) medical practitioners who made me feel like "it's
all in my head" and "I'm crazy". Their
"you have to live with it" attitude and/or
their lack of full knowledge of this condition has been
the worst part of having to deal with having this
condition. My heartfelt thanks go to Devin Starland, M.D.
and Mary Ellen Copeland, M.S., M.A. for writing this book.
It not only is the most resourceful reference to these
conditions I have read, but it is easy to understand and
concise. (...)
If you can buy only one book,
this is the one. , August 21, 2001
Reviewer: A reader from Northern WI United States
Devin's first survival manual was good but this book is
GREAT. It is very up to date and easily understood. I
like the way the chapters are broken down by topics.
Chapter 8 (Signs and Symptons) is my favorite. It has
sample questions (such as Do you have eye pain ?) and
answers that are short but for more information on the
question it refers you to which chapter(s) you can look
at to learn more about it. The graphics are good and
simple to figure out what they are refering to. There is
a chapter on developing a strong support system which is
something FMS suffers truly need. I have used this book
many times already. This book is written by and for FMS
suffers. Devin makes me feel like part of the "FMily".
This is my new "bible". I have ordered 4 more
of this book for friends just so that they leave mine
alone!!!

Reader Review
Excellent state of the art review of muscle pain
syndromes, June 29, 2000
Reviewer: Jan Dommerholt
from Bethesda, Maryland, USA
This book is a compilation of articles by the world's
experts on muscle pain syndromes, including fibromyalgia
and myofascial pain syndrome based on presentations
during the 1998 Myopain conference in Italy, sponsored by
the International Myopain Society. It provides an
excellent overview of the current knowledge base of these
syndromes, the etiology, treatment options, etc. The book
is intended for persons with some medical background and
may be a bit too technical for others. Highly recommended!
