Book Description
Introduces Osteopathy, chiropractic and other systems of
manual medicine have developed a variety of models for
understanding the mechanics of musculoskeletal motion. In
this pioneering work, that same structural vision is
applied to the visceral system.
In Visceral Manipulation, Jean-Pierre
Barral, D.O. and Pierre Mercier, D.O. show how
manipulation of the viscera can be used as an effective
complement to other forms of manual medicine. Drawing
upon years of research and clinical experience, the
authors convincingly demonstrate that the relationship of
structure and function among the internal organs is just
as strong as that among the constituents of the
musculoskeletal system, and that manipulation of the
viscera can be effectively used to treat dysfunction.
Visceral Manipulation meticulously
describes the indications for evaluating each of the
major organs, and explains how to perform manipulative
techniques for treating many types of restrictions.

This is a must have for anyone interested in abdominal
palpation and treatment. The authors convey a vast amount

Book Description
In this second volume, Jean-Pierre Barral further
develops the concepts and techniques first described in
his pioneering work Visceral Manipulation.
The introductory chapter focuses on lesional chains and
reflexogenic zones. There is an in-depth discussion of
such diagnostic methods as general and local listening,
inhibition points, and the completed form of the Adson-Wright
and Laségue tests.
The treatment section introduces recoil and general
induction, and discusses treatment strategy and some
special problems associated with manipulation in children.
The autonomic plexuses of the trunk and their place in
visceral manipulation are also described.
Other chapters discuss such structures as the peritoneum,
spleen and pancreas which were not covered in the first
volume. There is also an expanded discussion of the
gastroesophageal junction, stomach and duodenum, liver,
gallbladder and bile ducts, jejunoileum and colon, and
kidneys.
Extensively illustrated and fully indexed, Visceral
Manipulation II is an important book for all
practitioners who wish to improve their skills in
visceral manipulation.

A Reader Review
Helpfull!, February 5, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from Norway
Mr. Barral and Mercier adds to the osteopathic
armamentarium with an easy understandable approach to the
viscera and its associated structures as it relates to
the body in a mechanical, neuro-logical and chemical
manner, making it accesible for manual treatment (which
of course should be in context of treating the patient
and not the pain). This book is helpfull as a learning
tool (for educational support) and a clinical manual.

Book Description
This book completes Jean-Pierre Barral's widely acclaimed
four-volume exploration of the osteopathic implications
of the dysfunctions of the internal viscera. The focus of
this volume is on the pelvis, especially of women.
The introduction provides an overview of the
relationships of the pelvis and spine. Tests which are
particularly useful for pelvic disorders, including the
genitohumeral and completed Laségue's tests, are
detailed. Also included are imaging studies that
demonstrate the utility of the viscersl manipulative
approach to the pelvis.
Chapter 2 focuses on the bladder, and especially the
treatment of stress incontinence and the effects of the
various systems of pressure on the lower pelvis. The role
of bladder restrictions in low back pain, lower leg
problems, and hip pain is explained.
Chapter 3 discusses the uterus, focusing on the cervix.
The reader will gain an appreciation for the osteopathic
view of the importance of the different motions affecting
the uterus, and how they can become dysfunctional.
Chapter 4 concludes the tour of the female pelvis with
the uterine tubes and ovaries. The holistic osteopathic
viewpoint is typified by Barral's presentation of the
various elements that must work in harmony for
fertilization to occur

Book Description
While Jean-Pierre Barral's previous books, Visceral Manipulation
and Visceral Manipulation II, focus on the abdomen, in
The Thorax the author turns his unique gaze to the
thoracic cage and its contents.
Barrral begins by describing the thorax as an area of
conflict and contrast: it must protect the organs
enclosed within, yet must also allow exchanges with the
neck and abdomen. Problems with either of its dual roles
of protection and exchange lie at the root of most
thoracic disorders. Detailed descriptions and
illustrations are provided of tests for dysfunction and
treatment of the nonaxial joints, fasciae and viscera of
this important area of the body.
Among the special topics contained in this volume are
global and local listening of the thorax; utilization of
the completed Adson-Wright test; cervical attachments of
the pleura; intrasternal tests and treatment; utilization
of various access points to the phrenic nerve; and
stretching along the orientation of the coronary arteries.
The Thorax is an important book for all practitioners who
wish to broaden their skills in visceral manipulation.

Synopsis
This well-researched, richly illustrated book begins with
an overview of the biomechanics of trauma. The authors
demonstrate how an osteopathic-based mechanical approach
to trauma can be applied to the entire body, with a
special focus on the phenomenon of whiplash. From here
they move on to a functional-anatomical approach,
focusing on the skull and other aspects of the central
nervous system, as well as the structures that surround
and protect it. Finally, they view trauma from the
perspective of how it affects the different tissues and
systems of the body, including the osteoarticular,
visceral, and vascular systems, and the various sequelae
that can occur in each of these systems.
Having presented an osteopathic interpretation of trauma,
the authors apply some of their own unique methods of
osteopathic diagnosis, particularly with regard to those
structures that are often affected by trauma: the dural
tube, cranial sutures, craniofacial membranous junction,
mediastinum, and spleen. The book concludes with a
description of manual techniques devised by the authors
to treat some of the more recalcitrant sequelae of trauma.

Book Description
Since the time of Hippocrates, medical practitioners have
noted the clinical significance of temperature changes
found over different parts of the body. In Manual Thermal
Diagnosis Jean-Pierre Barral brings this form of
diagnosis into the new millenium.
As one aspect of the physical examination, manual thermal
diagnosis is a method that utilizes sensitivity to
temperature changes to identify dysfunction within the
body. It is useful across a wide spectrum of health
disciplines, and augments other forms of diagnosis.
Manual Thermal Diagnosis begins with a review of the
scientific understanding of body heat, and the clinical
significance of changes in surface temperature. The
reader is then provided with the tools that are needed to
transform one's hands into sensitive diagnostic
instruments. Each area of the body is surveyed, from the
cranium, face and neck to the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and
posterior visceral projections.
This is an indispensable book for practitioners who want
to discover more of what their hands can tell them.
