The History of Our School!

The present Clonpriest National School was built in 1902, (We celebrated our centenary in August 2002, look here). The building contained a boys school and girls school, each staffed by a principal and an assistant. The play area was divided to ensure the children didn't mix at play !. Midway through the century the schools were amalgamated with the late Owen Birmingham as principal and the late Bridig Galvin as assistant. In 1959 numbers warranted the appointment of an extra assistant, for whom 2 very small rooms were adapted into a particularly unsuitable classroom.

During the 70's it became obvious that conditions were grossly substandard and in 1979 the late Fr. O'Sullivan, Mr. Motherway the Principal, and Mr. Kelly representing the Board of Management set out for Dublin to plead with the Department to improve the structure of the school. Minor improvements were agreed and carried out. In 1985, under the chairmanship of Fr. J. Slattery a new campaign was initiated. The Department agreed on August 1st, 1985 "That the school should be generally updated". This was achieved in 1992, having suffered various delays and beaurocratic hiccups in the interim. Meanwhile by 1989 the enrolement figure had risen sufficientlv fot the appointment of a fourth teacher in November.

The building now comprised of two of the original classrooms, which have completely refubrished, toilets serving these classrooms, an office, teachers' room, stores, lobby, boiler house and two new classrooms with built-in toilets. The grounds, excluding small areas designated for Shrubs, are completely tarmacadamed and an extensive ball-court has been added. Access is available to the adjoining parish field.

The modern Clonpriest National School was blessed on Sept. 16th 1993 by Canon Thornhill.
