Soccer!

We are all big soccer fans, and why not; Roy Keane was born in Cork!.
Born August 10, 1971, Keane has always stayed true to his roots-maintaining he is from Cork first and Ireland second. Those who know him best remark on the one characteristic, his determination, that has made him one of the top players in the world.A former amateur boxer, Keane plays a very aggressive and hard-nosed style of soccer. Keane was small for his size as a youngster, so therefore he had to work twice as hard to compete against other kids. His hard work has paid off as others have noticed his stellar play.

Argentina superstar Diego Maradona, while watching Keane play, uttered, "Buy him, together we play good." Unfortunately Maradona's Sevilla team in the Spanish league could not get Keane as he was purchased by Manchester United of the English Premiership who paid what was then a British domestic record f3.75 million for Keane's services in 1993.
Although Keane has reached the summit of his game, his beginnings in the sport were not as spectacular. He began his career with Rockmount AFC, a breeding ground for talent in Cork City. Keane wrote unsuccessfully to English clubs, including Nottingham Forest, before being picked up by Cobh Ramblers, one of two League of Ireland clubs playing in Cork at that time. While at Cobh, Keane was put through a football scholarship where he grew in size and matured as a player.

He joined Nottingham Forest in 1991. Under the guidance of Brian Clough he became one of the most promising midfielders in England and as a result Manchester United then paid a record fee of £3.75 million for his services. Roy made his debut for Manchester United on the 7th of August 1993. After winning his first cap for the Republic of Ireland against Chile on May 22nd 1991 Keane is now captain of both club and country. Roy Keane has recieved many honours during his time at Manchester to date, none greater than being a member of thier treple winning side in 1999. Roy was also voted double player of the year in 2000. Roy Keane is without doubt one of the greatest players of his era.
