A fad? A fashion? Or patios
of the future? We at Clontarf Landscapes have been studying this question
for the past five or six years in particular - up to then, we built a timber
deck perhaps once a year. We now construct a timber deck almost every week.
The range of materials available at present makes the use of outdoor timber
a reality even in our damp Irish conditions. Manufacturers are guaranteeing
their products for 15 years and more. Every year new treatment products
are becoming available that maintain that attractive finish of freshly
produced timber. The days of rotting substructures are hopefully behind
us (provided you get the best advice and the best construction - no amateurs
for this work).
A timber deck allows you to use your garden without having to dress
for the arctic. You can walk out in your bare feet onto a warm surface.
It is a much softer surface for the children to play on. It is also much
cleaner that the traditional slab patio. As you can see in the photos,
decks (unlike patios) can be constructed at exactly the same level as your
floors inside, making the garden much more like a just another room.
Like all landscaping, the first essential is a good design for
your deck. The proper choice of materials, and the proper relationship
to the other materials and features of the garden, will provide you with
a fabulous extension to your house.
