To have our patch recognised as an 'Environmentally Friendly Zone' we competed for a Green Flag from An Taisce. The task they set us was to set up a recycling programme in our school.
1. We applied for a recycone from the Urban Council. 30% of household rubbish bins consists of recyclable food products. Every day suitable leftovers from the pupils' lunches are put in the recycone. This decomposes into a natural compost that we use in our school garden.. BENEFITS OF RECYCONE: Cuts down on landfill usage Provides us with compost Eliminates having to use artificial fertilizers There's less harm to wildlife: 2. We also began collecting used newspapers. These are collected every Thursday by Pat Murtagh and brought to Co. Offaly to be recycled into biodegradable planting pots. We informed all households in the area of our project and even people with no pupils in the school are now bringing in papers every week. 3. We also started up a Ringo Programme in our school. Plastic rings are brought in from the locality and sent off to Cork to be recycled into beverage can rings again. We have already filled two large containers. Rings can be very damaging to wildlife and are slow to decompose. All pupils in the school were involved in this project. |
"After we read it, recycle it". Papers, Mags, Comics and Books Let's all enjoy the encouraging looks Put them in the van For the Cycone Man Papers, Mags, Comics and Books.
Crusts, Cores, Peels and Skin, Put them in the recycone bin, Your life will be better With compost forever Crusts, Cores, Peels and Skin.
An Taisce were so impressed that they designated Our Patch a Green School and presented us with a Green Flag. There are only 45 such schools in the country. |
