Martin Smith / Paul Kennedy Memorial 7 a
side Tournament
This tournament is held every July/August in
memory of two former players who both died tragically at a very
young age. Both Martin and Paul played with the club at all grades
and were only out of youth football when they played on our 3rd
division team that won the league in year 2000.Paul was a tasty
right back and was equally good at going forward and creating and
scoring goals. Martin was a more physical player who played right
wing and center forward and when the odds were against us he could
be counted on work his socks off to turn the game back in our
favor and could also
chip in with some excellent goals .It
was decided by Gerry Fell and Johnny McGee who at the time
managed the 3rd division team to run a tournament
in memory of the lads and to say that it has been a success
would be a gross understatement. Blessed with glorious weather
which no doubt Smithy and Kenno had a hand in, the first two years
of the tournament are a testament to the esteem in which the lads
were held in the community of Ferrybank,
And surrounding
Parishes.
The first winners of the Tournament was won
by a local team called Eddies Eagles who’s captain Eoin Collins
played with Martin and Paul ,along with John Cummins, John Myler,
Colm O Neill and John Treacy.
The following year also saw a local team win
and again a lot of former team mates here in Eddie Daly, Kenny
Purcell, Andrew Keogh, Brian Prendergast, and Stephen Keogh.
We also held a penalty competition, which was won by
Kieran Doyle, and runner up was Kevin Roche. There was also a
women’s 7 a side match played in which Martin’s mother
Geraldine, and cousins and aunts participated. Add in Face
Painting, Picnics, and some great craic and it’s easy to see why
this Tournament is eagerly awaited
